The RPO’s Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley has been called ‘a natural communicator’ – and tonight he has a joyous story to tell.

He kicks off with the whirlwind energy and homespun high-spirits of Smetana’s irresistible comedy overture. He finishes with the blazing trumpets and big, sunlit melodies of Brahms’ second and happiest symphony – it was written while the composer was on his summer holidays, and you can tell!

Shortly after its formation in 2019, the Trio Bohémo‘s talent and deep musicality became apparent. They received numerous awards: first, they caused a stir at the Gianni Bergamo Award in Lugano, Switzerland, where they were awarded second prize. Due to this success, the trio was accepted into the “Le Dimore del Quartetto” network, which later awarded them the Ensemble of the Year 2021 prize. In the same summer, they received several special prizes at the “ISA Festival ” in Austria, such as for the best interpretations of Viennese Classical Music, work by Bohuslav Martinů and the Czech Contemporary Chamber Music. A few days later, they won first prize in the “International Filippo Nicosia Award” in Italy.

Smetana's great tone poem  My Fatherland a musical introduction to Czech culture and history. It begins at Vyšehrad Castle, the old seat of the Bohemian kings, and continues along the great Vltava River that flows below the old castle. In the last movement, the magical mountain Blanik is depicted, which contains a sleeping army. When the need is greatest, the sleeping knights will wake up and save the Czech Republic from the enemy.
