And they bid their audience farewell to the summer break with extremely optimistic sounds. Felix Mendelssohn's overture to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of his greatest strokes of genius: the famous introductory wind chords immediately transport their listeners to a fairy kingdom painted by Shakespeare, in which Mendelssohn's shimmering and darting sounds create fascinating scenes of mysterious magic. Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto marks his turn to a "new simplicity" that should above all be good-humored, energetic and objective, while still demanding the highest level of art from the soloist. And it reflects Prokofiev's (still) cosmopolitan attitude, which was fueled by his international concert tours at the time of writing. The final point is set by Ludwig van Beethoven – as is already the custom in Pforzheim – with another symphony: this time it is the fourth, which – although written at a time when Beethoven's deafness had already progressed – is described as extremely positive, "Greekly slim" and downright luminous. It demonstrates in an incomparable way how clearly, purely and lively a master like Beethoven is able to bring ever new opposing principles into dialogue with one another and, as a result, into harmony!

Experience a captivating reimagining of a timeless love story with the Boston Ballet's production of "Roméo et Juliette." This fresh take on the Shakespearean classic is set to enchant audiences from May 29 to June 8, 2025, offering a unique perspective through the eyes of the remorseful Friar Lawrence. Choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, this version highlights the tragic tale with minimalistic sets that amplify the dancers' emotions, allowing the audience to deeply connect with the characters' experiences of pride, fear, excitement, and impulsiveness.

The contemporary choreography, praised for incorporating elements of cinematography, flows freely, enabling the dancers to fully embody the emotions of the characters. The performance is further elevated by the Boston Ballet Orchestra under Mischa Santora, featuring the full Sergei Prokofiev score, which has been refined to enhance balletic movement.

This production, which first premiered on December 23, 1996, with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, has been brought to life thanks to a generous gift from the Stephens Naphtal Foundation. Performances will be held at the Citizens Opera House, with a schedule that includes evening shows at 7:30 pm and matinees at 1:30 pm, ensuring multiple opportunities to witness this breathtaking ballet.

George Gershwin made history with his "Rhapsody in Blue": He wanted nothing less than to give his fellow countrymen their own, American music, beyond all ethnic and cultural boundaries - and initially even had the title "American Rhapsody" in mind. Blue notes and jazz can be heard in this work, as can the hustle and bustle of New York; the audience was absolutely thrilled after the premiere. Gershwin's hit actually has three big cadenzas for piano, and at the premiere the composer himself took on the solo part. In the 4th Philharmonic Concert, the young Lithuanian Martynas Levickis will play it on the accordion in his debut with the Duisburg Philharmonic. A lyrical theme in "Rhapsody in Blue" is somewhat reminiscent of Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose "Symphonic Dances" are on the program afterwards. However, it is not really exuberant, but the composer quotes from his "Isle of the Dead" and plays the "Dies Irae" from the Last Judgement several times. Cheerful and reminiscent of Haydn's classical musical language, the concert begins with Sergei Prokofiev's 1st Symphony, conducted by Delyana Lazarova, who has already performed on the concert stage with Martynas Levickis and is also making her debut with the Philharmonic.

This event is set to take place on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the prestigious Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts at Northwestern University.

The evening's program promises to be a rich and varied exploration of the violin repertoire, featuring works by Johannes Brahms, Sergei Prokofiev, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Highlights include the dynamic Scherzo from F-A-E Sonata by Brahms, Prokofiev's deeply expressive Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 63, Ysaÿe's intricate Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin, and Beethoven's profound Sonata No. 7 in C Minor for Violin and Piano, Op. 30. Ballet meets break-dance! The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s enchanting Sleeping Beauty. Beethoven’s dramatic Grosse Fuge takes on a new life as the BRKFST Dance Company joins the Orchestra to perform their original choreography to the work, which combines break dancing with contemporary dance for an experience unlike anything else. The concert closes with an impossible-to-refuse pull from the past – selections from Ravel’s Mother Goose and Prokofiev’s beloved Romeo & Juliet.
