We are rarely confronted with death in our culture. We don't talk about it and we move it to nursing homes and hospices. Perhaps a new attitude towards death and grief is slowly emerging, but we still lack rituals and spaces to face them, because studies show that grief is fundamentally lonely in our society. The concert series 'The Tones of Death' will attempt to create such a space, perhaps a modern mourning ritual, where death is existential and where we can be together about it.

In 2021, the Danish Entertainment Orchestra performed the first concert with 'The Tones of Death', which was framed by excerpts from Naja Marie Aidt's 'If death has taken something from you, give it back. Carl's book', selected and read by the author herself. Since then, there have been successful concerts in 2022 and 2023 with, among others, Søren Ulrik Thomsen and Maren Uthaug as literary guests.

Star oboist Albrecht Mayer returns to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival for one evening after almost ten years. He will perform with one of the oldest orchestras still in existence in the world: the Mecklenburg State Orchestra in Schwerin. Mayer's musical home is with the Berlin Philharmonic, and in Mecklenburg, he will revive the era of "Ludwigslust Classicism."

The season of seasons closes by honoring the themes of light, love, and rebirth through acclaimed works by Pergolesi, Scarlatti, Bach, and Vivaldi. In Vivaldi’s “Summer,” the cuckoo, dove, and goldfinch sing in the blazing sun before the winds begin to blow. Following an homage to Scarlatti, including his Salve Regina in G Minor, we conclude with a work that he inspired; Pergolessi’s final masterpiece, Stabat Mater. Its dancing rhythms and decorative trills contrast effectively with the tender, passionate text sung by soprano Anna Dennis, rounding out the season with a sense of joy and hope.

Jerome Robbins is considered one of the most important ballet makers of the 20th century and his unmistakeable style has had a decisive influence on American dance. Interplay, his second choreographic work, premiered in 1945 in New York, provides a rousing opening to the four-part programme American Signatures that combines dance icons with current choreographic voices.

Performed to Morton Gould’s jazzy score, Interplay presents precisely what its title suggests: as if in a playground, the dancers meet, full of fun, but also competing with each other in Robbins’ choreography, that employs jazz elements to enrich the classical ballet vocabulary and with which the theatre maker and dance artist created one of the works that had a formative influence on his aesthetic.

The dialogue between eras has always been a source of artistic fascination. The musical language of Giovanni Pergolesi, W.A. Mozart, and their contemporaries found an echo in the neoclassical period of the early 20th century. In his "Antiche danze ed aria," Ottorino Respighi referenced lute pieces from the early and high Baroque periods, including those by Jean-Baptiste Besard and Ludovico Roncalli, which he adapted to the classical string sound. Igor Stravinsky, on the other hand, specifically sought out Pergolesi's works for his "Pulcinella" ballet, allowing him to freely adapt them. With the minor flaw that, as it later turned out, most of these pieces were apparently by other masters...
