This year's x2: V concert, titled "WHEN FORCES COMBINE," showcases the ultimate masters of chamber music as our distinguished teaching artists perform side-by-side with our incredibly talented fellows. The program promises an inspiring array of performances, lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes with one intermission, featuring works by David Lang, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms. Highlights include Lang's "Cheating, Lying, Stealing," Schumann's "Andante and Variations, Op. 46," and Brahms' "String Sextet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 36."

Featured artists for the evening include Michael Werner, showcasing his expertise in percussion and orchestral studies, alongside collaborative pianists Natasha Kislenko and Margaret McDonald, and violinists Sibbi Bernhardsson and Martin Beaver, among others. Each artist brings a unique flair and depth of experience to the performance, promising a night of breathtaking music.

Direct from its five-star UK run, the NYC premiere of Song of Songs fuses Pam Tanowitz’s choreography with Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang’s “dreamlike” (The Guardian) choral settings of the Biblical love poem, performed live by six musicians, with movement mined and abstracted from Jewish folk dance. Student Recital: April Ong, Percussion—Kaleidoscope

In an imaginative program that builds a bridge between the 15th and 21st centuries, the superlative Tallis Scholars pair a masterwork of Renaissance polyphony with a new composition by composer David Lang.   Antoine Brumel’s colossal Earthquake Mass, scored for 12 voices, is a marvel in its imagination and scale, the intricate, dense music coming alive through the clarity, precision, and purity of tone that has been the hallmark of this ensemble’s performances for decades.   Lang, who is co-founder and co-artistic director of the groundbreaking new-music collective Bang on a Can, has composed dozens of award-winning works for choir and voice, from chamber works to oratorios to opera—and received the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for another a cappella work, The Little Match Girl Passion. His sun-centered is a response to Brumel’s mass, inspired by Galileo’s pursuit of truth, the relentless nature of human curiosity, and the perils of suppressing it.   “The sound Phillips draws from the Scholars manages to be ethereal and yet full-blooded, uplifting and yet grounded in the very human emotions the words express” (The Guardian).
