Quinn Kelsey, the premier Verdi baritone of his generation, returns to star in the title role, with tenor René Barbera as the suave and sadistic Duke and Italian soprano Rosa Feola as Gilda, his unsuspecting prey. Stage director Tomer Zvulun updates the action to Mussolini’s Italy, transporting audiences to a realm of glittering grandeur that’s absolutely rotten to the core.

In this centuries-old lyrical folktale with roots in Slavic mythology, a mermaid falls in love with a prince. With the help of the moon and a witch, she defies her father's advice—giving up her home and voice to win the prince's love on dry land. When it doesn't go as planned, the regretful prince seeks redemption, and heartbreak reigns in the land of true love.

This new production from celebrated director Michael Cavanagh will whisk you away to an opulent 1930s country club and features some of the brightest stars in opera today. The vengeful Alberich—a power-hungry dwarf—steals the magic Rhine gold to forge an all-powerful ring. Wotan, king of the gods, entraps Alberich and relinquishes the gold ring to the giants as payment for building Valhalla. The cursed ring quickly claims its first victim.

Treachery, seduction, and a raging father dead set on revenge. Rigoletto—he’s the jaded jester paid to make others laugh in the debauched court of Mantua. But when his innocent daughter is cruelly seduced by the salacious Duke, Rigoletto stops being funny and vows revenge. Seething with rage, he launches an elaborate plot to avenge his beloved child. But everything goes terribly, terribly wrong…Experience Verdi at his most dramatically potent, with melody after irresistible melody sung by our incredible cast.

Rusalka is the Czech version of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid. While it has many similarities to both the familiar Disney® movie and the Hans Christian Andersen story, they are not exactly the same. First of all, her name is Rusalka, not Ariel. Secondly, Rusalka is not a mermaid per se, but a water sprite, also called a water nymph. However, like in The Little Mermaid, Rusalka falls in love with a human Prince. She has a witch turn her into a human in exchange for her voice. Rusalka must win and keep the Prince’s love, or else there will be disastrous consequences for them both.
Will a jealous Princess ruin Rusalka’s plan? Will Rusalka’s father be able to bail her out if things go awry? Will true love triumph?
Rusalka premiered in 1901 and has become one of the most beloved lyric fairy tales of all time. We are proud to be producing Rusalka for the first time in our 82-year history.

Pleasure Has Its Price. Fleeing the scene of his crime, a lecherous nobleman commits a heinous murder—an act so depraved that it unleashes the vengeance of hell itself. The Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy concludes in a post-apocalyptic future with "Don Giovanni", an opera that masterfully blends dark comedy with even darker deeds. Bertrand de Billy conducts Mozart’s propulsive score. Starring Etienne Dupuis, Luca Pisaroni, Adela Zaharia, and Carmen Giannattasio.

It’s a busy day in the manor house as the staff prepare for the marriage of the wily valet Figaro and his quick-witted fiancée, the maid Susanna. But the head of the house, Count Almaviva, wants Susanna for himself—and he’s used to getting his way. With the help of the slighted Countess, Figaro and Susanna work to turn the manor upside down in order to exchange their holy vows of matrimony. 

You can’t help but fall in love with Mozart’s endearing comedy of schemes and disguises. But hidden beneath its lighthearted façade is an exploration of the social constructs of power and class. At every turn, the servants are one step ahead of the Count.

Set at the birth of America, San Francisco Opera’s production highlights the deconstruction of class within a recently-built manor house. Scaffolding, blueprints and the dust of recently plastered walls pervade Erhard Rom’s set design, suggesting a new world emerging that challenges old ideals.
