Gossip is Rigoletto’s stock-in-trade. As the court jester to a womanizing duke, there is plenty of scandal to go around, and his sharp tongue keeps him in gainful employment. But underneath the caustic barbs, Rigoletto is devoted to his daughter, Gilda, whom he keeps shielded from the lascivious eyes of the duke. When a nobleman lays a curse on Rigoletto for his cruel humor, the jester has no idea how far he is about to fall.

As Rigoletto’s life unravels, his desperation intensifies, underscored by some of the most lyrical, heartfelt music ever written for the stage. Verdi’s operatic masterpiece is a study in dualities: cynicism and tenderness, hope and despair. This production echoes these contrasts with its richly designed renaissance couture set against a striking backdrop inspired by Giorgio de Chirico.

Music Director Eun Sun Kim leads the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in a continuation of her multi-year exploration of the works of Verdi.

Directed by James Robinson, expect a visual feast that complements the emotional depth of a work that has captivated in every medium. Conductor Iván López Reynoso leads an exciting cast. American soprano and former apprentice Sylvia D’Eramo sings Mimì, Chinese tenor Long Long is Rodolfo and Polish baritone Szymon Mechliński makes his U.S. debut in the role of Marcello. Former Apprentice Singer Emma Marhefka is Musetta, Mexican-American baritone Efraín Solís is Schaunard and American bass Soloman Howard returns to the Santa Fe Opera stage as Colline.

The most recent opera by preeminent American composer John Adams—a glorious adaptation of Shakespeare’s immortal drama—has its Met premiere. Following her debut in the company premiere of Adams’s El Niño in 2024, soprano Julia Bullock stars as the irresistible Cleopatra, one of theater’s most complex and captivating characters, opposite bass-baritone Gerald Finley as the conflicted Antony. Adams himself takes the podium to conduct his lyrical and richly orchestrated score, leading a new staging by groundbreaking director Elkhanah Pulitzer that transports the story of troubled romance and political strife from ancient Rome to the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s. Tenor Paul Appleby is Caesar, who goes to war with Antony, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong is Caesar’s sister and Antony’s forsaken wife Octavia.

Wagner’s Tannhäuser receives a highly anticipated new staging from internationally acclaimed director Francesca Zambello—and Houston audiences will be the first to experience her strikingly beautiful production. Lust and love, diametrically opposed forces in the opera’s universe, do battle within the title character’s psyche as the story unfolds. At curtain’s open, Tannhäuser has abandoned his life as a poet who sings of courtly love in favor of the carnal delights of the goddess Venus, spending a rapture-filled year on her magic mountain in the sky. Seeking something more, he renounces her, hoping to find redemption—and a union back home in Germany with his spiritual love Elisabeth. But his epic journey to salvation has been cursed.
