There’s an elusive logic that occurs only in dreams, that nocturnal state where the human mind processes the flood of impressions and information it takes in every day, sifting and sorting without interruption from the waking world. In this very special and wide-ranging program, Manchester Music Festival artistic director Philip Setzer is our guide through a vivid, varied dreamscape in sound—a journey epitomized by composer Paul Epstein’s appropriately titled Dreamsonata, which leaps from Viennese ballroom sounds to midwestern ragtime in the blink of an ear. The rest of the program blazes a similarly unlikely yet ultimately harmonious path, from the courtly String Quartet of Benjamin Franklin (yes, really) to Samuel Barber’s elegiac Adagio for Strings, by way of Scott Joplin, Amy Beach, and Carlos Simon.

American pianist and Steinway Artist Richard Dowling is a renowned interpreter of and recognized authority on the piano music of Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Zez Confrey, and Bix Beiderbecke. Mr. Dowling’s 3-CD set of The Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin was nominated for a Grammy Award. He was the first pianist in the world to perform the Complete Joplin cycle of 53 rags, waltzes, marches, and cakewalks — nearly four hours of music all from memory in two sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, and has performed well over 100 Great Scott! all-Joplin concerts across America. He is a frequent guest artist at ragtime and jazz festivals. In the spring of 2019, Ms. Basler appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Moira in Poultries Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale and made a company debut with Boston Midsummer opera as Clorinda in La Cenerentola. In the fall of 2019, Ms. Basler joined the Metropolitan Opera roster, covering Pousette in Manon. Her other roles include Micaëla in Carmen, the High Priestess in Aida, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Glasha in Katya Kabonova, and the title role of Carlisle Floyd's Susannah.

Join the Confluence Chamber Orchestra for a mesmerizing journey back in time with "Meet Me in St. Louis," a special concert series celebrating the opening of the Missouri History Museum's new World’s Fair exhibit. This unique musical experience is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, 2024, at 2:30 pm, at the Missouri History Museum, located at 5700 Lindell Blvd., Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri.

Dive into the rich history of the 1904 World's Fair as our orchestra members, having delved into the museum’s archives, bring to life the works performed by famous musicians of that era. This concert will not only feature a captivating selection of music but also offer attendees a walking tour of the fair’s most exciting music venues, all set against a stunning backdrop of iconic photographs from 1904.

The program includes a variety of pieces that echo the spirit of the World's Fair, including "The Star Spangled Banner" by Vanderstucken, "The Louisiana March" by Wagner, "Grand March from Tannhauser" by Sousa, "The Liberty Bell March," "The Streets of Cairo aka the Hoochee Coochee Dance" by Johnson, "Saint Louis Fire Company Anniversary Parade March" by Mills and Sterling, "Meet Me in St. Louis" by Joplin, "The Cascades" by Foster, "The Social Orchestra" by Bizet, "Intermezzo from Carmen," "Zampa Overture" by Herold, "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens, and the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini.

Audiences will be treated to an expansive repertoire that spans the history of Black music, featuring pieces from iconic composers and musicians such as Florence Price, Scott Joplin, William Grant Still, Duke Ellington, and more. The concert will also showcase local talent, including a performance by Waterloo's own Felicia Smith-Nalls.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a pre-concert conversation with Jason Weinberger, Bruce Henry, and Felicia Smith-Nalls at 6pm in Jebe Hall, offering deeper insights into the evening's program and the history of African American music.
