This special concert will be conducted by CSO Music Director, Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz, and will feature the acclaimed pianist Baron Fenwick.

**Artist Spotlight: Baron Fenwick**  
Awarded the silver medal in the 2019 Sendai International Music Competition, Baron Fenwick is a leading pianist of his generation. At 25 years old, he has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Flint Symphony, the South Shore Symphony, and the Sendai Philharmonic. Fenwick has also performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and holds degrees from Mannes College of Music.

The Sphinx Organization’s “flagship performing entity” presents a varied and vibrant program of string music in this acclaimed annual event. Hear several works by Joplin, including two ragtime essentials and a newly arranged overture from Treemonisha. Additional concepts of American music are explored in Derrick Skye’s multifaceted and optimistic American Mirror, Part One, and in a New York premiere by renowned violinist-composer Curtis Stewart, who “translates stories of American self-determination to the concert stage.” Soloist Njioma Chinyere Grevious—winner of the Robert F. Smith First Prize and Audience Choice at the 2023 Sphinx Competition—performs Perkinson’s quintessentially American solo composition, Blue/s Forms. Selections by Coleridge-Taylor and Carreño also feature in this one-of-a-kind performance.

For the third year in a row, the American Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to kick off our season in the lush surroundings of Bryant Park. "Beyond the Hall" invites audiences to explore music beyond the traditional concert hall setting, featuring an eclectic mix of compositions. From Florence Price's vibrant "Suite of Dances" to the theatrical melodies of Weill's "Threepenny Opera," from Scott Joplin's operatic "Treemonisha" to Bernstein's lively "On the Town," and the haunting strains of Herrmann's "Psycho," this program promises to captivate with its exploration of music's dramatic and diverse roles across various venues and genres.

Bryant Park enhances the experience by offering hundreds of free picnic blankets, comfortable bistro chairs, and a curated selection of food and drink available for purchase from local vendors. With no tickets required and no lines for entry, attendees are welcomed to a hassle-free and immersive musical evening.

Grammy Award-nominated soprano Chelsea Basler continues to make her mark on an extensive array of operatic roles with her unique combination of vocal appeal and artistry. Praied for her "luminous voice" with its "easy soaring range," she has been noted for her "wonderful acting" and declared "simply superb" by Opera Today. In the spring of 2019, Ms. Basler appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Moira in Poultries Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale and made a company debut with Boston Midsummer opera as Clorinda in La Cenerentola. In the fall of 2019, Ms. Basler joined the Metropolitan Opera roster, covering Pousette in Manon. “A pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs” (The New York Times), Jeremy Denk returns to Berkeley with an artfully curated recital of American-inspired music paired with canonic works by Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. Denk is known for bringing fresh perspective to a staggering range of repertoire, from medieval to contemporary. Two works here celebrate Black American vernacular composers whose music rarely gets its due on concert stages: “Blind Tom” Wiggins’ The Battle of Manassas and Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin’s Heliotrope Bouquet. British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s They Will Not Lend Me a Child reflects his interest in Black American spirituals; and Frederic Rzewski’s “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” is a movement from his Four North American Ballads, based on American folk and protest songs.

Written within a few years of each other, three musical titans composed bold works that captured a spirit of national pride and musical awakening. Acclaimed piano virtuoso and Malibu resident, Andrew von Oeyen, exemplifies both the composer’s penchant for Russian bravado, and an awareness of international musical trends of the early 20th century. The “Dean” of Finnish composers, Jean Sibelius used classical proportions and inspiration to create a beautiful folk influenced symphony championed by Music Director Michael Christie during his performances at the First International Sibelius Conductors Competition in 1995. American composer, Scott Joplin was key to the “Ragtime” movement that would sweep the nation even in the face of blatant racist barriers. His opera Treemonisha wasn’t heard in his lifetime, but is a striking work that immediately calls to mind the musical genres that made Joplin famous.

Experience the captivating artistry of AGAVE, an acclaimed Early Music group known for their dynamic performances that span from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Renowned for their spirited and engaging interpretations, AGAVE has earned accolades and a GRAMMY nomination for their album with the velvet-voiced countertenor Reginald Mobley, titled "American Originals." This program is a celebration of music by predominantly Black and brown composers, featuring works by Cuban composer Esteban Salas, the extraordinary Black American composer Florence B. Price, and ragtime master Scott Joplin, among others. The performance promises a rich tapestry of sound, uniting voices to create a uniquely American musical experience. Highlights include Florence B. Price's evocative pieces such as "Resignation" and "Songs to the Dark Virgin," Esteban Salas's "Tu, mi Díos, entre pajas," and Scott Joplin's "Bethena, a concert waltz," arranged by Lebedinsky. The program also features compositions from the Cusco Cathedral archive and the Chiquitos Archive in Bolivia, showcasing the diverse and vibrant heritage of early music.

Celebrate Black History Month with this exceptional cross-curricular opportunity.  A performance and slide show by the KSO’s Newport Ragtime Band surveys the roots of American musical heritage. The program features ragtime, blues, Dixieland and early jazz from 1898-1933, with tunes by legendary black musicians/composers Scott Joplin, James Reese Europe, W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and others. The program also highlights many local Cincinnati connections to this music’s national popularity and historical significance.  The Q & A session at the end of the concert allows students and teachers the opportunity to ask questions of any musician on-stage.
