Throughout the years, composers and musicians such as Gershwin, Copland, and Joséphine Baker left their mark on the city’s dynamic music scene. This concert celebrates the rich musical exchange between continents, from the rhythms of jazz and ragtime to the unique style and virtuosity of Cuban violinist José White. Jazz musicians adopted French harmonies and the French, in turn, embraced the rhythmic freedom of jazz with open arms. The composers featured in this concert were either Americans beloved in Paris, lived there for a time, or, like Debussy and Ravel, were deeply influenced by the vibrant music of the Americas. American pianist and Steinway Artist Richard Dowling is a renowned interpreter of and recognized authority on the piano music of Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Zez Confrey, and Bix Beiderbecke. Mr. Dowling’s 3-CD set of The Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin was nominated for a Grammy Award. He was the first pianist in the world to perform the Complete Joplin cycle of 53 rags, waltzes, marches, and cakewalks — nearly four hours of music all from memory in two sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, and has performed well over 100 Great Scott! all-Joplin concerts across America. He is a frequent guest artist at ragtime and jazz festivals. Mr. Dowling’s one-hour Great Scott! program will include many of Joplin’s best known and most popular works, including all six used in the 1973 Academy Award-winning movie The Sting.

Fenwick has also performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and holds degrees from Mannes College of Music.

The Sphinx Organization’s “flagship performing entity” presents a varied and vibrant program of string music in this acclaimed annual event. Hear several works by Joplin, including two ragtime essentials and a newly arranged overture from Treemonisha. Additional concepts of American music are explored in Derrick Skye’s multifaceted and optimistic American Mirror, Part One, and in a New York premiere by renowned violinist-composer Curtis Stewart, who “translates stories of American self-determination to the concert stage.” Soloist Njioma Chinyere Grevious—winner of the Robert F. Smith First Prize and Audience Choice at the 2023 Sphinx Competition—performs Perkinson’s quintessentially American solo composition, Blue/s Forms. Grammy Award-nominated soprano Chelsea Basler continues to make her mark on an extensive array of operatic roles with her unique combination of vocal appeal and artistry. Praied for her "luminous voice" with its "easy soaring range," she has been noted for her "wonderful acting" and declared "simply superb" by Opera Today. In the spring of 2019, Ms. Basler appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Moira in Poultries Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale and made a company debut with Boston Midsummer opera as Clorinda in La Cenerentola. In the fall of 2019, Ms. Basler joined the Metropolitan Opera roster, covering Pousette in Manon. The program includes a variety of pieces that echo the spirit of the World's Fair, including "The Star Spangled Banner" by Vanderstucken, "The Louisiana March" by Wagner, "Grand March from Tannhauser" by Sousa, "The Liberty Bell March," "The Streets of Cairo aka the Hoochee Coochee Dance" by Johnson, "Saint Louis Fire Company Anniversary Parade March" by Mills and Sterling, "Meet Me in St. Louis" by Joplin, "The Cascades" by Foster, "The Social Orchestra" by Bizet, "Intermezzo from Carmen," "Zampa Overture" by Herold, "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens, and the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini.

Join us for a captivating evening at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center as the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony presents "Concert: Evolution of African American Music" on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 7:00 pm. This remarkable performance, led by jazz maestro Bruce Henry, marks the culmination of a season-long community residency dedicated to exploring the rich tapestry of African American music. 

Audiences will be treated to an expansive repertoire that spans the history of Black music, featuring pieces from iconic composers and musicians such as Florence Price, Scott Joplin, William Grant Still, Duke Ellington, and more. The concert will also showcase local talent, including a performance by Waterloo's own Felicia Smith-Nalls.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a pre-concert conversation with Jason Weinberger, Bruce Henry, and Felicia Smith-Nalls at 6pm in Jebe Hall, offering deeper insights into the evening's program and the history of African American music.

“A pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs” (The New York Times), Jeremy Denk returns to Berkeley with an artfully curated recital of American-inspired music paired with canonic works by Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. Denk is known for bringing fresh perspective to a staggering range of repertoire, from medieval to contemporary. Two works here celebrate Black American vernacular composers whose music rarely gets its due on concert stages: “Blind Tom” Wiggins’ The Battle of Manassas and Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin’s Heliotrope Bouquet. British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s They Will Not Lend Me a Child reflects his interest in Black American spirituals; and Frederic Rzewski’s “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” is a movement from his Four North American Ballads, based on American folk and protest songs.

Get swept up in a weekend of moving, magical performances with an international flair. LACO music director JAIME MARTÍN conducts TCHAIKOVSKY’s Violin Concerto featuring Franco-Serbian violin sensation NEMANJA RADULOVIĆ making his US orchestral debut; the overture to SCOTT JOPLIN’s opera Treemonisha; and Ravel’s lively and delightful Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose).  Nemanja Radulović with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is made possible, in part, from a generous contribution from Leslie Lassiter.

Written within a few years of each other, three musical titans composed bold works that captured a spirit of national pride and musical awakening. Acclaimed piano virtuoso and Malibu resident, Andrew von Oeyen, exemplifies both the composer’s penchant for Russian bravado, and an awareness of international musical trends of the early 20th century. The “Dean” of Finnish composers, Jean Sibelius used classical proportions and inspiration to create a beautiful folk influenced symphony championed by Music Director Michael Christie during his performances at the First International Sibelius Conductors Competition in 1995. American composer, Scott Joplin was key to the “Ragtime” movement that would sweep the nation even in the face of blatant racist barriers. His opera Treemonisha wasn’t heard in his lifetime, but is a striking work that immediately calls to mind the musical genres that made Joplin famous.
