Kinetic energy, humour, precision and collective power, in two 30-minute sessions of modern dance expression. Medhi Walerski’s almost ritualistic work Chamber makes its first appearance on stage in Sweden, here in tandem with Cacti – one of many expressive works by Alexander Ekman.

Lars von Trier’s film Melancholia is the perfect source material for a grand operatic experience. A decadent wedding that ends with the destruction of the Earth, accompanied by the Royal Swedish Orchestra, synthesizers and magnificent voices.

London-based Botis Seva is one of the most exciting rising names in contemporary dance. Awarded the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, BLKDOG is a brutally beautiful reckoning with how today’s youth must survive in a world not built on their terms.

During a rehearsal, a planned solo part was spontaneously transformed into a group piece because the energy in the room was so strong – an example of the creative openness and flexibility of the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. The ensemble is one of Europe's leading contemporary dance companies. The Danskompani programs almost exclusively new works which are specially created for them in Gothenburg in close collaboration with renowned choreographers.

Understanding common requirements is part of the nature of artistic work. From there on progress can be made and new work created. The three choreographers whose works form the Common Ground performance share a connection with the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) in The Hague. Along with a shared artistic conviction, in which humour also has its place, their choreographies are interwoven with connections filled with subtle content – and all of them have had world premieres at the NDT. The first two are inspired by music for string quartet. And the first and third pieces are each based in their own way on the concept of seduction.

Is movement dance or dance movement? Siblings Imre and Marne van Opstal see themselves not only as choreographers in the classical sense but also as movement directors. Their multi-layered and often surreal approach to dance is hugely popular around the world. Collaborating for the first time with the Semperoper Ballett, the creative duo are providing the company with a brand-new work.

In a striking icy landscape, a ship is trapped in polar waters. Its GPS coordinates – S 62° 58', W 60° 39' – place it off the coast of Deception Island. Panicked, the passengers struggle to survive in this hostile environment. When a performer confronts the director, the drama gives way to another reality: that of the artists creating the piece from scratch, as if stranded on a blank page. Their search for truth and authentic emotion pushes them beyond their limits. The days are long, the conditions grueling. The crew's struggle for survival becomes a struggle for the survival of the artistic process itself. And paradoxically, for the performers who have sacrificed their lives for their art, leaving the stage is an agonizing prospect.

After his acclaimed literary adaptations of »Carmen« and »Peer Gynt«, Johan Inger now turns to a classic ballet that will reveal yet another facet of his art: »Swan Lake«. In 2023, the Swedish choreographer has reinterpreted this great work for Semperoper Ballett and, in so doing, addressed some profound questions: How are personal relationships affected by violence and manipulation? And what roles do personal freedom, respect and acceptance play in a loving relationship?

The Hessian State Ballet begins its season with an extraordinary double evening and a reunion with leading choreographers of the present: After the successful productions Timeless by Xie Xin and I'm afraid to forget your smile by Imre & Marne van Opstal, the Hessian State Ballet combines the dance positions of these currently groundbreaking choreographers in a double evening for the first time in Broken Bob . In their new creation I am Bob,the Dutch siblings Imre & Marne van Opstal create a choreographic network of identity through a close interweaving of music and text. Exploring the question of who Bob is, he stands as a placeholder for humanity itself. The dancers explore his essence in a large ensemble through the power of movements and their patterns. In doing so, the choreographic duo approaches the limits and possibilities of body and mind through dance.

From England with Love is an ode to this intricate and beautiful country. Through Shechter’s choreography, the dancers evoke the paradox at the heart of this open, generous and soul – searching place, conflicted by its dark history and powerful attachment to old traditions. They draw us into their search for identity and self-knowledge as they grapple with this complex system of values. Performed to a rich score that combines the breath-taking sounds of English composers, presented in a clash with raging rock alongside echoes of choir and electronics in an avant-garde cacophony.

A 50th Anniversary coup! This collection of innovative ballets beautifully demonstrates the vast landscape from which choreographic creativity can spring. PNB is thrilled to be the second company to present Crystal Pite’s The Seasons’ Canon, which joins Emergence and Plot Point in PNB’s expanding collection of Pite works. The Seasons’ Canon shares the bill with a world premiere by international choreographer and artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet Dwight Rhoden, and George Balanchine’s musically-modeled Duo Concertant.
