Proclaimed "a phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of the best pianists of his generation" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist, improviser, and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with, and has been commissioned by, many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations around the world.

Last year, Orchid Classics released Mr. Goodyear's recording of his suite for piano and orchestra, "Callaloo" and his piano sonata. His recent commissions include an orchestral work for the Chineke! Orchestra, his Piano Quintet for the Penderecki String Quartet, and a piano work for the Honens Piano Competition. His suite for solo violin, "Solo" was recorded by violinist Miranda Cuckson on the Urlicht Audiovisual label, and his work for cello and piano, "The Kapak" was recorded by cellist Inbal Segev on the Avie Records label.

Yefim Bronfman returns to the NY Phil with Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, one of the most impassioned statements of the Romantic period. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, which borrows from Ukrainian folk tunes, dances its way to a joyous finale. Chen Yi’s Landscape Impression, inspired by millennium-old Chinese poetry, opens this concert conducted by Xian Zhang.

Step into Middle-earth as Piedmont Wind Symphony brings to life Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings, a powerful musical journey inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy epic. Composed in 1988 and winner of the prestigious Sudler Composition Award in 1989, this groundbreaking work was the first symphony ever written specifically for concert band by de Meij.

Structured in five evocative movements, de Meij’s symphony captures the spirit and mystery of Tolkien’s world—from the commanding presence of Gandalf to the shimmering beauty of Lothlórien, the tragic duality of Gollum, the perilous Journey in the Dark, and the warm-hearted resilience of the Hobbits. The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.

Gary Hill is a sought after guest conductor and clinician in the instrumental music education field. He is a Professor Emeritus of Music and Director of Bands at Arizona State University.

Conductor Rebecca Tong leads the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in this celebratory program that honors Women’s History Month. Violinist and Sphinx collaborator Melissa White returns to Hilbert Circle Theatre to perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto. The program also features six female composers from around the world, including Brazil, the United States, China, Canada, Indonesia, and Mexico. Florence Price was a trailblazer who created a successful career at a time when there were few opportunities for female composers. The rest of the composers featured continue to blaze trails in the 21st century with their wide range of styles and perspectives, standing at the forefront of classical compositions today.

Joshua Bell is the soloist in Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto, a composition of dramatic emotional scope. Music Director Jaap van Zweden also conducts Chen Yi’s blend of a traditional song-and-dance form, mountain song, and Beijing Opera plus the suite from Stravinsky’s commedia dell’arte–inspired ballet Pulcinella.

The biblical Book of Genesis provided the inspiration for commissioning seven concise works from seven different composers: Lisa Streich (Sweden), Francesco Filidei (Italy), Chen Yi (China/USA), Hannah Kendall (England), Mikel Urquiza (Spain), Saad Haddad (USA), and Mark Andre (Germany). These new Genesis compositions will be performed after the overture from Darius Milhaud’s ballet La création du monde has already set the musical theme. They will be followed by Kaija Saariaho’s last completed work, the trumpet concerto Hush, written for the jazz trumpeter Verneri Pohjola. Finally, we will turn our attention to the soaring geyser fountains of Iceland, which Jón Leifs, a native of the world’s largest volcanic island and a composer of extraordinary sonic power, translated into musical form and energy.

Romantic classics share the program with a dynamic world premiere. Pianists Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee return to the Monterey Symphony for the debut of Chen Yi's Concerto for Two Pianos, a work the couple co-commissioned with the Monterey Symphony to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Yi, a daughter of China's Cultural Revolution who emigrated to America, forged a singular voice with a brilliant synthesis of Chinese and Western traditions. In 1816, the teenage Franz Schubert dazzled Vienna with his Symphony No. 5, a work of youthful optimism, rhythmic vitality, and Classical grace. The program concludes with selections from Antonín Dvorák's folk-inspired Slavonic Dances.

A sonic feast of different textures and moods — there's something for everyone on this program that samples music from the 18th to the 21st centuries. Though named after a characteristically light and free-spirited symphony by Joseph Haydn, you'll also get to hear a high-energy double concerto between two violins cascading over each other in an Escheresque climb, a quintet for woodwinds that seems to bend the very air the players breathe, and an ethereal meditation for string orchestra.

A journey, years in the making. In 2020, having bonded over a shared cultural heritage rooted in southern China, SPCO Principal Oboe Cassie Pilgrim gave the world premiere of composer Chen Yi's Elegy for Solo Oboe — a mournful response to the ongoing pandemic that we livestreamed from an empty hall. In Melodies from Home, her newest oboe concerto written for Cassie, Chen Yi returns to the universal exploration of family and culture, of connection and nostalgia. Led by conductor Cosette Justo Valdés in her SPCO debut, this program offers an escape into serenity through its soft, woodwind melodies, pastoral strings and wondrous harp.

Melodies from Home was commissioned for The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Cassie Pilgrim, Principal Oboe, Sewell Family Chair, in honor of Gloria Sewell and her extraordinary support of the arts, by Linda Hoeschler and Peter Blyberg.
