Step into Middle-earth as Piedmont Wind Symphony brings to life Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings, a powerful musical journey inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy epic. Composed in 1988 and winner of the prestigious Sudler Composition Award in 1989, this groundbreaking work was the first symphony ever written specifically for concert band by de Meij.

Structured in five evocative movements, de Meij’s symphony captures the spirit and mystery of Tolkien’s world—from the commanding presence of Gandalf to the shimmering beauty of Lothlórien, the tragic duality of Gollum, the perilous Journey in the Dark, and the warm-hearted resilience of the Hobbits. The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.

Gary Hill is a sought after guest conductor and clinician in the instrumental music education field. He is a Professor Emeritus of Music and Director of Bands at Arizona State University.

Conductor Rebecca Tong leads the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in this celebratory program that honors Women’s History Month. Violinist and Sphinx collaborator Melissa White returns to Hilbert Circle Theatre to perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto. The program also features six female composers from around the world, including Brazil, the United States, China, Canada, Indonesia, and Mexico. Florence Price was a trailblazer who created a successful career at a time when there were few opportunities for female composers. The rest of the composers featured continue to blaze trails in the 21st century with their wide range of styles and perspectives, standing at the forefront of classical compositions today.

Proclaimed "a phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and "one of the best pianists of his generation" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Stewart Goodyear is an accomplished concert pianist, improviser, and composer. Mr. Goodyear has performed with, and has been commissioned by, many of the major orchestras and chamber music organizations around the world.

Last year, Orchid Classics released Mr. Goodyear's recording of his suite for piano and orchestra, "Callaloo" and his piano sonata. His recent commissions include an orchestral work for the Chineke! Orchestra, his Piano Quintet for the Penderecki String Quartet, and a piano work for the Honens Piano Competition. His suite for solo violin, "Solo" was recorded by violinist Miranda Cuckson on the Urlicht Audiovisual label, and his work for cello and piano, "The Kapak" was recorded by cellist Inbal Segev on the Avie Records label.
