There are some shared themes between this concert and our fall concert, although there are certainly some marked contrasts.  The “Danse Bacchanale” by Camille Saint-Saëns is another dance (alluding to Anna Clyne’s DANCE), but with bacchanale referring to a wild party with drunken revelry. And Potentia is a new work based upon a poem, as was DANCE. Commissioned by Orchestra Santa Monica, Potentia presents a poem of the same name written by Anne Carmack, Santa Monica’s first poet laureate. Composed by Jason Anthony Gomez and narrated/sung by the renowned baritone Jubilant Sykes, OSM is proud to perform the world premiere of this moving work depicting passages of life. In October 1898, the committee of the Norwich Festival requested a short choral work for their next Season. However, during this period Elgar was preoccupied with writing his Enigma Variations, and by the time he returned to the work, the committee had changed its mind. They had engaged the young alto, Clara Butt, and wanted a work which she could premiere. So he crafted Sea Pictures, based on five poems by different authors, each offering a different response to the ocean. A work noted for its drama, serenity and richness, the soloist will be the Northern Ireland mezzo, Sarah Richmond.

From the beginning, Brahms’ Third Symphony has proven to be his most evocative. Brahms offers a compelling, highly revealing musical self-portrait, rich with references to his own thoughts about life and love in its striking mixture of passion and pessimism, of restlessness and serenity, With numerous acknowledgments to Wagner and allusions to the same Rhine-based mythology, it provides other fascinations as well. The spirit of Brahms infuses Hough’s Piano Concerto. The title refers to Stefan Zweig’s memoir of his cultural life in Vienna before the First World War and evokes nostalgia for a bygone era when piano concertos were a touring composer-pianist’s calling card. It bridges time, weaving together echoes of the past with virtuosic brilliance. The Variations on an Original Theme is a brilliantly varied portrait gallery of Elgar’s friends, family and neighbours. The musical caricatures contain some of the most charming and deeply felt music Elgar ever penned and these are elaborated upon in this unique performance with Elgar’s descriptions narrated by an actor.

Written in the summer of 1919, the Cello Concerto represented, for Elgar, the angst, despair and disillusionment he felt after the Great War, and an introspective look at death and mortality. It signified Elgar’s farewell to the way of life as he had known it. The music is private and poignant but it still remains a richly lyrical and noble work with the solo cello in full focus with its bold statements and heart-rending themes. Taking the late Romantic ideal of transfiguration, summing up a lifetime of musical experience, and pushing the orchestral genre to its extreme, Tod und Verklärung portrays a dying man who recalls the great loves of his past. It is an emotional cauldron of sheer magnificence. It seems fitting that Beethoven composed his First Symphony at the dawn of a new century.  Despite its homages to the older generation, it is very much a forward-looking work with glimmers of the innovations to come from the great composer.

Join us for a mesmerizing journey through Europe with the Cascade Symphony on December 10th and 11th, 2023, at the Edmonds Center of the Arts. This unique concert series, titled "Europe: A Symphonic Journey," promises an evening filled with the rich musical heritage of Europe, starting at 7:30 pm each night.

Under the baton of our esteemed Music Director, the orchestra will perform a selection of works that epitomize the essence of European music. The program includes:

- "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key, representing the USA
- Johann Strauss's "Emperor Waltz" from Austria
- The overture to Wagner's opera "Tannhauser" from Germany
- "The Moldau" by Smetana, showcasing the Czech Republic
- Verdi's overture to the opera "Nabucco" from Italy
- "Pomp and Circumstance March No.1" by Elgar, bringing the spirit of Britain
- Grieg's "Morning from Peer Gynt Suite No.1" from Norway
- "Farandole from L’Arlesienne Suite No.2" by Bizet, featuring France
- And the unifying "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven, celebrating all of Europe

Adding to the evening's allure, Rick Steves, renowned public television host and travel guide author, will serve as the Musical Tour Guide. Rick brings his wealth of knowledge and passion for Europe, offering pre-concert lectures at 6:30 pm each night, providing deeper insights into the music and its cultural context.

Join us for an enchanting evening at the Hamburg International Music Festival, featuring the extraordinary talents of violinists Julia Fischer and Lena Neudauer, accompanied by the renowned Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The evening will commence with Bach’s masterful Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, featuring the harmonious interplay between Julia Fischer and Lena Neudauer. This will be followed by the intriguing and complex Concerto grosso No.1 by Schnittke. The second half of the concert will delight with two of the most beloved serenades for strings: Elgar’s Serenade in E minor and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade in C major.
