At her parents’ lavish Christmas party, Clara is given a mysterious Nutcracker Doll. Once all the guests have left, she sneaks downstairs to find her present and comes face-to-face with the fearsome King Rat, ready to do battle with the Nutcracker and his band of toy soldiers. As soon as King Rat is vanquished, Clara is whisked away on a magical adventure with the Nutcracker, travelling through swirling snowflakes to an enchanting kingdom where she is transformed into the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Three thrilling leading ladies trade off as the volatile diva Floria Tosca. First, soprano Aleksandra Kurzak reprises her riveting portrayal of the title role, starring alongside tenor SeokJong Baek as her revolutionary lover, Cavaradossi, and baritone George Gagnidze as the sadistic chief of police Scarpia. Later in the season, the extraordinary Lise Davidsen sings Tosca for her first time at the Met, alongside tenor Freddie De Tommaso in his eagerly anticipated company debut and powerhouse baritone Quinn Kelsey. And in the winter, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and tenor Brian Jagde reunite following their acclaimed 2021 performances of the lead pair, joining forces with legendary bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, who returns to the Met after more than a decade. Opera North presents a captivating production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Così fan tutte," running from 2 February to 6 April 2024. This enchanting opera, directed by Tim Albery, is a delightful exploration of mischief, misunderstandings, and the complexities of love, set against the backdrop of the 18th Century. The production features lavish costumes and the exquisite beauty of Mozart’s music, promising to be a hit with audiences.

The story revolves around the cunning Don Alfonso, who, determined to prove that love is not as steadfast as it seems, convinces two young men to test the fidelity of their fiancées through a series of disguises and seductions. What follows is a light-hearted romantic comedy filled with surprises, leading to a reflection on the nature of love and trust.

The cast includes Alexandra Lowe as Fiordiligi, Heather Lowe as Dorabella, Anthony Gregory as Ferrando, Henry Neill as Guglielmo, Quirijn de Lang as Don Alfonso, and Gillene Butterfield as Despina. The production sees Clemens Schuldt and Chloe Rooke sharing conducting duties, with set and costume design by Tobias Hoheisel and lighting by David Finn.

Performances are sung in English with English subtitles, making it accessible to a wider audience. The opera runs for approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes, including one 20-minute interval. Ticket prices start from £16, and various discounts and season ticket packages are available to make this cultural experience more accessible.

Following his acclaimed 2019 performances as Alberich in the Ring cycle, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny stars as the accursed Dutchman in Wagner’s eerie drama, alongside incandescent soprano Elza van den Heever as the woman determined to redeem his soul. Maestro Thomas Guggeis makes his company debut on the podium, with tenor Eric Cutler as Erik and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Daland in François Girard’s ghostly setting.

Three short works that highlight the brilliant range of possibilities blossoming from ballet’s vocabulary. A love letter to Bach, Helgi Tomasson’s poetic 7 for Eight, is elegant and nuanced, with an undercurrent of deep emotion flowing through excerpts from seven keyboard concertos for eight dancers. Myles Thatcher’s COLORFORMS, the break-out hit of the 2021 Digital Season that was filmed during the pandemic at SFMOMA and Golden Gate Park, finally has its stage debut! William Forsythe’s Blake Works I, set to songs from James Blake’s album The Colour in Anything, starts with ballet’s precision, speeds it up, pushes it to the limit of physicality, then refracts it like a kaleidoscope as 21 dancers are driven by pop music and joy.

Wagner’s soaring masterpiece makes its triumphant return to the Met stage after 17 years. In a sequel to his revelatory production of Parsifal, director François Girard unveils an atmospheric staging that once again weds his striking visual style and keen dramatic insight to Wagner’s breathtaking music, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct a supreme cast led by tenor Piotr Beczała in the title role of the mysterious swan knight. Sopranos Tamara Wilson and Elena Stikhina, as the virtuous duchess Elsa, falsely accused of murder, go head-to-head with soprano Christine Goerke as the cunning sorceress Ortrud, who seeks to lay her low. Bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin is Ortrud’s power-hungry husband, Telramund, and bass Günther Groissböck is King Heinrich.

Sparks are sure to fly as some of opera’s most electrifying artists light up Puccini’s classic thriller. Sopranos Aleksandra Kurzak, Angela Gheorghiu, and Liudmyla Monastyrska take on the title role of the desperate diva, opposite tenors Michael Fabiano, Roberto Alagna, and Yusif Eyvazov as the ardent painter-revolutionary Cavaradossi. Baritone John Lundgren makes his Met debut as the merciless Baron Scarpia, sharing the role with baritone Željko Lučić, who reprises his acclaimed portrayal.

Tuplet, from Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman, with music and sound by Mikael Karlsson, uses dancers' bodies as percussion instruments, creating driving tempos with impeccably timed dance movements.

The season finale will feature the return of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, the Belgian-Colombian choreographer fresh off the record-breaking success of Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, with a riveting new creation.


Catch Tuplet

The most recent opera by preeminent American composer John Adams—a glorious adaptation of Shakespeare’s immortal drama—has its Met premiere. Following her debut in the company premiere of Adams’s El Niño in 2024, soprano Julia Bullock stars as the irresistible Cleopatra, one of theater’s most complex and captivating characters, opposite bass-baritone Gerald Finley as the conflicted Antony. Adams himself takes the podium to conduct his lyrical and richly orchestrated score, leading a new staging by groundbreaking director Elkhanah Pulitzer that transports the story of troubled romance and political strife from ancient Rome to the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s. Tenor Paul Appleby is Caesar, who goes to war with Antony, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong is Caesar’s sister and Antony’s forsaken wife Octavia.
