Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.

This year, children from six schools - Bonne Nouvelle, Bressoux-Piron, Fontainebleau, Saint-Benoît Saint-Servais, Grivegnée Centre La Haminde, and Grivegnée Péville - transform into little chefs to present their story "La Brigade Costumée." With the musicians of the OPRL and actor Philippe Bonhomme, music will blend with cuisine in a unique performance. Imagine if our conductor, Lars Corijn, also took on the role of head chef, and the audience became guests at a grand gala dinner. This event promises a symphony of musical and culinary harmony, where cooking and music become gastronomic arts. Our young singers will perform texts written specifically for them, telling a story conceived by the children and their teacher during classroom workshops, with the support of actor Philippe Bonhomme and musicians from ReMuA. This appetizing spectacle is sure to make you want to sing, or perhaps, to eat.

The performance will feature a delightful mix of compositions, including Rossini's "La pie voleuse" (Overture), Offenbach's "La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein" (Et Pif, paf, pouf), and pieces from Mancini's "La Panthère Rose," Donizetti's "Don Pasquale," and more, arranged by Francesc Marco and J. Ehrler. “Performers should not be afraid of playing good music” says Sean Shibe – the visionary, multi-award-winning Scottish guitarist who’s single-handedly redefining the way the 21st century thinks of his instrument. “And listeners should try not to be scared of listening to it”. No worries on that score, as Shibe pairs the world’s favourite guitar concerto with the first hearing (in this form, anyway) of a flickering, fantastical modern classic by the innovative Spanish composer Francisco Coll. The passion rises like heat-haze; no wonder, then, that guest conductor Delyana Lazarova has framed it with visions of wonder: Rimsky-Korsakov’s very Russian postcard from Spain, and the sorcery, secrets and ear-tingling sensations of a real BBC SSO favourite, Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’.

Painting in tones – that has always been one of the specialties of French music. Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is probably the best-known example: the heat shimmers, the sun blazes, and erotic fantasies wander. But "Spring Morning" by Lili Boulanger, who died young, also conjures up colourful images before our inner eyes. It is hard to believe that such a light-flooded, life-loving piece was written when the highly talented composer was already struggling with death.

The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.

Ravel’s Mother Goose started life as children’s piano pieces, before becoming an orchestral suite. Tonight we hear the complete ballet music, where the scenario weaves around the tale of Sleeping Beauty, Ravel having composed additional music for her. She dreams of Tom Thumb and Beauty and the Beast, amongst others, until Prince Charming awakens her with a kiss. Brahms’s Fourth Symphony completes Sir Mark’s cycle of the composer’s symphonies with the Hallé. It will be performed with the smaller number of strings Brahms himself called for, recreating the breath-taking clarity he would have known.
