British baritone Rodney Earl Clarke captured every heart when he starred in the Halle’s Christmas Concert a couple of years ago. We couldn’t wait to bring him back, so here he is with a sack full of treats for the festive period, including operatic and Hollywood favourites, as well as some chestnut-roasting seasonal classics. Our master of ceremonies is genial conductor Stephen Bell, who’ll be taking us through a roll call of Christmas hits from Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov and heartwarming movie music from Home Alone to Frozen. And as it’s Christmas you can enjoy some good old-fashioned audience participation singing along with White Christmas and trying to keep up with the reindeer in Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

When the nights are at their longest, frosty wind and snow storms sweep the land, it is the time of the Koliada – of the pagan winter solstice feast and the Christian-orthodox Christmas celebration in equal measure. In these magical “twelve days of Christmas” the barrier between the human world and the realm of dark beings becomes especially thin. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “true” Christmas song, Die Nacht vor Weihnachten, based on the eponymous story by Nikolai Gogol, also plays out in this very same period.

Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.

Dive into a magical musical adventure with the London Symphony Orchestra at the enchanting "Family Concert: Magic and Music" event. The concert features an impressive lineup of magical music, including excerpts from Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" orchestrated by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Paul Dukas's "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice", and the whimsical "Let’s Make a Potion" and "There’s Magic In Us All" by Lucy Hollins. The program also highlights classics like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Overture: The Magic Flute K620, Igor Stravinsky's Firebird 1919, and John Williams's "Hedwig’s Theme", creating a spellbinding atmosphere that will transport you to a world of wonder.

Under the baton of conductor Lee Reynolds, with Lucy Hollins and Patrick King as co-presenters, the London Symphony Orchestra invites you to immerse yourself in the magic of music. The concert is set to conclude at approximately 3:45 pm, ensuring an afternoon filled with memorable moments.

Tickets are priced at £18, £14, and £12 for adults, with a special rate of £6 for under-18s. A booking fee of £4 applies per online or phone transaction. Special discounts are available for groups of 10, saving at least 20%, and Barbican Access Members can avail of free companion tickets.

This year, children from six schools - Bonne Nouvelle, Bressoux-Piron, Fontainebleau, Saint-Benoît Saint-Servais, Grivegnée Centre La Haminde, and Grivegnée Péville - transform into little chefs to present their story "La Brigade Costumée." With the musicians of the OPRL and actor Philippe Bonhomme, music will blend with cuisine in a unique performance. Imagine if our conductor, Lars Corijn, also took on the role of head chef, and the audience became guests at a grand gala dinner. This event promises a symphony of musical and culinary harmony, where cooking and music become gastronomic arts. Our young singers will perform texts written specifically for them, telling a story conceived by the children and their teacher during classroom workshops, with the support of actor Philippe Bonhomme and musicians from ReMuA. This appetizing spectacle is sure to make you want to sing, or perhaps, to eat.

The performance will feature a delightful mix of compositions, including Rossini's "La pie voleuse" (Overture), Offenbach's "La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein" (Et Pif, paf, pouf), and pieces from Mancini's "La Panthère Rose," Donizetti's "Don Pasquale," and more, arranged by Francesc Marco and J. Ehrler. The event will showcase the talents of Philippe Bonhomme (actor), musicians-intervenants from ReMuA Liège, and the children's choir and orchestra of El Sistema Liège, under the direction of Lars Corijn.

Experience the genius of Mozart through the hands of Maxim Emelyanychev in the 2023/2024 season at Berwaldhallen. The Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester (Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra) is proud to present its principal guest conductor designate, Maxim Emelyanychev, in a special performance that promises to be a highlight of the musical year. Emelyanychev, not only a celebrated conductor but also a renowned soloist, will introduce himself to the Berwaldhallen audience by taking on the dual role of conductor and soloist in Mozart’s bright and jovial 23rd piano concerto. This performance is unique as Emelyanychev will lead from a hammer grand piano, an instrument typical of Mozart’s period, offering a historically informed and authentic sound.

The concert will take place on May 4, marking a significant event where Emelyanychev's expertise in early music and his interpretative finesse will be on full display. Following the intermission, the audience will be treated to Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful fairy tale suite, Sheherazade, with Emelyanychev taking the podium to lead the orchestra in this evocative and dynamic composition.

Young composers have been hailed as "the next Mozart" for  generations, but how did composers interpret Mozart’s legacy? Join  Parlando as it explores Mozart’s impact on classical music, culminating  in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, the precursor to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus. The program includes Reynaldo Hahn’s charming Mozart Overture and Alfred Schnittke’s witty tribute to the 18th century, Moz-Art à la Haydn, before concluding with Rimsky Korsakov’s one-act opera, Mozart and Salieri, featuring Joseph Parrish as Salieri and Daniel McGrew as Mozart.

“Performers should not be afraid of playing good music” says Sean Shibe – the visionary, multi-award-winning Scottish guitarist who’s single-handedly redefining the way the 21st century thinks of his instrument. “And listeners should try not to be scared of listening to it”. No worries on that score, as Shibe pairs the world’s favourite guitar concerto with the first hearing (in this form, anyway) of a flickering, fantastical modern classic by the innovative Spanish composer Francisco Coll. The passion rises like heat-haze; no wonder, then, that guest conductor Delyana Lazarova has framed it with visions of wonder: Rimsky-Korsakov’s very Russian postcard from Spain, and the sorcery, secrets and ear-tingling sensations of a real BBC SSO favourite, Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’.

Painting in tones – that has always been one of the specialties of French music. Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is probably the best-known example: the heat shimmers, the sun blazes, and erotic fantasies wander. But "Spring Morning" by Lili Boulanger, who died young, also conjures up colourful images before our inner eyes. It is hard to believe that such a light-flooded, life-loving piece was written when the highly talented composer was already struggling with death.

The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.

The University Orchestra brings Shakespeare's timeless love story to the orchestral stage with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. The seventh of Prokofiev's nine ballets, Romeo and Juliet underscores the tragic love story of Shakespeare's iconic characters and scenes, including the Capulet's ball and the death's of the star-crossed lovers. One of today’s most in-demand lyric coloratura sopranos, Erin Morley has been praised for the “silken clarity of her voice and the needlepoint precision of her coloratura” (The New York Times). Since graduating from the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Morley has appeared in more than 100 Met performances, most notably as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Olympia in Tales of Hoffmann, Constance in Les Dialogues des Carmélites, and Pamina in The Magic Flute. Opera lovers who streamed the Met Stars at Home Gala during the pandemic will never forget her delightful rendition of “Chacun le sait, chacun le dit” from La Fille du Régiment, as she deftly accompanied herself at the piano.
