Join the LSU Symphonic Winds for their final concert of the semester as they present "Sacred Sonnets". The captivating program includes Vincent Persichetti's Symphony No. 6 (Symphony for Band) – one of the earlier masterworks for the medium,  Jonathan Newman's evocative “…As the Scent of Spring Rain”, and other pieces with unique and intriguing soundscapes. In his Serenade No. 6 dating from 1950, the American composer Vincent Persichetti combines two string instruments with a trombone, sometimes engaging them in an animated conversation, sometimes in a dreamy indulgence. This piece is followed by Gustav Mahler’s piano quartet, which was composed during his student days and is his only surviving work of chamber music. Apart from sketches for a scherzo only the first movement of the work has survived, which in this concert meets Alfred Schnittke’s piano quartet referring to Mahler’s quartet fragment. In this work, composed in 1988, Schnittke attempts to "remember something that did not come about (...), a sound quality that could not be thought through to the end." Mahler’s quartet sound shimmers through dimly, but is strongly alienated by clusters and polyphonic structures. The open end also gives Schnittke’s quartet the character of a fragment. The final piece is the colorful String quartet in D major by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, marked by its turn-of-the-century harmonies.

The Carnegie Mellon Harp Studio will perform a chamber recital comprised of students of Gretchen Van Hoesen, Artist Lecturer in Harp at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music and Principal Harp of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This recital will also feature other Carnegie Mellon students from various musical disciplines.

Join us for a captivating evening as the Greene County Foundation Chamber Series presents "Dances from Many Lands with the Angelus Duo," featuring the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. This special event will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Lawton Street Christian Church, located at 315 South Lawton Street, Jasonville, IN, 47438, United States.

The THSO is excited to collaborate with the Greene County Foundation to bring chamber ensembles and THSO musicians to Greene County for the 23-24 season. These ensembles will not only perform in public concerts but will also visit local schools to share their music with Greene County residents.

The evening's performance will star the Angelus Duo, comprising THSO Principal Harp Melanie Mashner and her sister, flutist Melissa Mashner. The duo will enchant the audience with a diverse program of dance music, featuring works by renowned composers such as Gluck, Salzedo, Persichetti, Debussy, Taki, Bizet, and more. Highlights include the Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Orpheus by C.W. Gluck, Suite of Eight Dances by Carlos Salzedo, and selections from Carmen by G. Bizet.

In addition to the evening concert, the Angelus Duo will visit Shakamak Elementary School from 12:30-2:30pm to present an educational program about different types of dances from around the world.

This chamber series is made possible thanks to the support of the Brown County Community Foundation, Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
