The recent passing of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho ended a brilliant career in the highest echelons of the music world. Aure, a work for violin and viola, demonstrates her mastery and originality. Danny Elfman, prolific film composer (Spider-Man, Good Will Hunting), singer, and percussionist, turns his protean talents to the Piano Quartet, with amazing results. The ravishing renegade Rebecca Clarke explores both modern concepts and ancient styles with her duo-concertante Dumka. Lastly, the autobiographical String Quartet No. 1 (“From My Life”) of Bedřich Smetana, father of Czech nationalist music, closes our season with one of the most beloved works in the chamber repertoire.

Scandinavia reigns supreme as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra welcomes the return of internationally renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä to lead the compelling Second Symphony of his compatriot Jean Sibelius. Completed in 1902 during an uncertain Russian domination of Finland, the piece became an uplifting interpretation of nationalistic identity, with sweeping majesty that elicits the adventurous landscape from which it sprang. Opening the performance is the jovial and familiar Peer Gynt Suite of Edvard Grieg, which was created at the request of Norway’s literary giant, Henrik Ibsen, as incidental music to his play of the same name. Finally, German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser joins for the North American Première of a new cello concerto, written for him by one of Europe’s leading composers, Detlev Glanert, and co-commissioned by the TSO.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will present Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” featuring a screening of Disney’s timeless holiday classic with Grammy®-winning composer Danny Elfman’s musical score performed live to the film. 

First released in 1993, Tim Burton's “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was directed by Henry Selick (“James and the Giant Peach”) and based on a story and characters by Tim Burton. The film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloween Town's beloved Pumpkin King, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock, Shock, and Barrel – to help him kidnap Santa Claus. The film is rated “PG.”

Composers Miklós Rósza (Hungary) and Alexandre Tansman (Poland) were both Jewish and escaped Europe as the Second World War was brewing. They both benefitted from work in Hollywood. John Williams and Danny Elfman are both prolific film composers. Los Angeles-born Viet Cuong, who now resides in Orange County, is Pacific Symphony’s composer-in-residence.

Cellist Gautier Capuçon joins Michael Tilson Thomas and the Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of the Cello Concerto by heralded film and concert composer Danny Elfman. The program is framed by showpieces for two sections of the SF Symphony: Igor Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments marries the composer’s flair for shock and drama with perhaps an even greater surprise, a supremely serene and understated finale. The string section gets the last word with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s charming and sumptuously romantic Serenade for Strings.

Little Rock? Hollywood! The first part of the evening takes us into the dazzling musical world of the dream factory. Master arranger Robert Russel Bennett titled his symphonically brilliant medley of immortal melodies by "the great George" Gershwin in Hollywood . This is followed by music by the living Hollywood legend Danny Elfman, composer of the soundtracks to The Simpsons, Batman, Spider-Man and countless others. After 2019, Vivi Vassileva, a German star percussionist with Bulgarian roots who electrifies audiences around the world, will be joining us as the soloist in his brand new percussion concert. Little Rock? Not only was Hilary Clinton born in the capital of the US state of Arkansas, but also a great woman in American music history sixty years earlier: Florence Price, the first African-American composer to make her voice heard. Her masterful fourth and final symphony from 1945 was not played for the first time until 2018. It is conducted by Gregor Mayrhofer, who has previously assisted Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic and worked with soloists such as Khatia Buniatishvili and Daniil Trifonov.
