The Dover Quartet, celebrated as one of the greatest quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, will present a program that delves into the rich tapestry of American music. The evening will feature Jessie Montgomery's "Strum," a vibrant piece by the contemporary African American composer, alongside a new arrangement and commission by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, specifically commissioned for this performance. Adding to the night's allure is Antonín Dvořák's "Quartet in F Major, Op. 96 American," a piece that embodies the essence of the American spirit.

Highlighting the concert is the world premiere of a work by Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, commissioned by Chamber Music Pittsburgh as part of its dedication to fostering the artistic voices that shape the future of chamber music. Tate, hailed by The Washington Post as a composer to watch, brings a unique blend of classical music and American Indian nationalism to the stage.

The Dover Quartet, consisting of Joel Link and Bryan Lee on violins, Julianne Lee on viola, and Camden Shaw on cello, holds prestigious residencies and has garnered numerous awards, including a sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The concert begins with Chokfi’: Sarcasm for String Orchestra and Percussion by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. This piece is a “character sketch” of a trickster character in Southeast American Indian legends named “Chokfi’”–– a rabbit person with a “complicated and diabolical personality.” In a dramatic shift to the mid-18th century, soloist Evan Kahn, the distinguished principal cellist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, will charm you with the classic and joyous Haydn Concerto in C Major. The program concludes with American composer Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 in Db Major, a piece said to reflect his Scandinavian heritage and “the wide, open sound of the American frontier.”

PCE’s seasonal tradition ringing in the New Year, Amazing Grace, returns with a stirring program of music for chamber orchestra and vocal soloists. Celebrating the universal expression of the human spirit through music, PCE’s annual Amazing Grace prompts a living BIPOC composer to curate a concert of music they connect with deeply, as well as sharing their own work. In January, Native American composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate takes PCE on a journey of fire and light in a program featuring selections from his moving cantata Standing Bear and Lowak Shoppala’ (Fire and Light), a work expressing Tate’s Chickasaw heritage through music, among others. The concert also includes Samuel Barber’s dreamlike Knoxville: Summer of 1915 performed by Mvskoke soprano, Kirsten C. Kunkle.

Join us for a captivating musical journey, "MoonStrike," at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History's Murch Auditorium on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. This unique event, part of the CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra series, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing through the enchanting lens of American Indian stories and folk songs.

"MoonStrike," composed by the renowned Chickasaw composer and U.S. Cultural Ambassador Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, is a half-hour children's production that embraces storytelling, space, and folk song in a universal celebration. The performance features three diverse American Indian legends, narrated by Tate himself, and is accompanied by a live string quartet. The quartet includes Kiarra Saito-Beckman and Minchae Kim on violins, Colin Henley on viola, and Trevor Kazarian on cello, bringing these tales to life with music that captures the imagination.

The production opens and closes with an arrangement of a Calusa Corn Dance, a traditional dance of various Native American tribes in the Southeastern US, marking the Harvest Moon and the commencement of the yearly corn harvest. Through vibrant tales, unexpected twists, and intriguing trickster characters, "MoonStrike" weaves a narrative that is as educational as it is entertaining.

The event takes place at the Murch Auditorium in The Natural History Museum of Cleveland, located at 1 Wade Oval Dr, Cleveland, OH 44106. Parking is available for guests in the attached garage, with entrance on Level 2, or through the front gardens along Wade Oval. General parking rates apply, with a fee of $10 for the first two and a half hours and $1 for each additional half hour, up to a daily maximum of $18. Special-event rates may vary.

Under the baton of the esteemed conductor Lawrence Golan, known for his dynamic and engaging conducting style, the York Symphony Orchestra is set to deliver a performance that transcends cultural boundaries and celebrates the universal language of music. Harpist Elizabeth Etters Asmus, with her profound musicality and expertise, will be among the featured artists, adding a layer of enchanting harp melodies to the evening.

This program featuring the YSO string section opens with Mozart’s famous serenade, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, and closes with another classic of string orchestra repertoire, Dvořák’s Serenade in E major. Between are works by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Chinese composer Bao Yuankai, 19th-century Mexican composer Ricardo Castro, and the ‘dean of
African-American composers,’ William Grant Still, whose Ennanga
(African Harp) will be performed by YSO harpist Jill Whitman.

America at 251: A Journey into the Future features Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Chokfi, alongside a new work by University of North Carolina Wilmington Assistant Professor Chelsea Loew, commissioned for the Wilmington Symphony’s America 250: Fourth of July Symphony Pops Concert. In addition, the program also includes Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms performed with the Cape Fear Chorale, and William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1, “Afro-American,” a cornerstone of American symphonic music.
