Piano prodigy Eric Lu, recent winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, gives us Schumann’s intensely creative Piano Concerto in A minor. A new work by Canadian composer Zosha Di Castri, that examines the repetitive nature of our world, and asks questions about what we could — or should — change. Perhaps you’ll find the answers as Beethoven takes us on a contemplative journey to the Viennese countryside with his “Pastoral” Symphony.

Join us at the Winspear Centre for an unforgettable evening of classical music with "Mozart & Sibelius," conducted by the talented Naomi Woo. This special concert, part of our ESO Classics series, is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 7:30 PM. 

This concert celebrates the genius of two legendary composers. In honor of Jean Sibelius's 50th birthday, the Finnish government commissioned him to create his powerful Fifth Symphony, a masterpiece that has since become a cornerstone of the orchestral repertoire. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, one of his final works, showcases soaring melodies and a beautifully sublime middle movement. Additionally, the evening will feature the ESO premiere of Zosha Di Castri's 2023 composition, "Pentimento," a piece that explores the concept of perpetual cycles in music.

The program for the evening includes:
- MOZART: Clarinet Concerto
- SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 5
- ZOSHA DI CASTRI: Pentimento (ESO Premiere)

Featured artists for the night are Naomi Woo, making her debut as conductor, and Narek Arutyunian, who will enchant us with his clarinet performance, also marking his ESO debut.

Canadian conductor and pianist Naomi Woo is a widely sought-after symphonic and operatic conductor, an educator, and the 2022 winner of the Canada Council’s prestigious Virginia Parker Prize. After a successful tenure as assistant conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, she joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as assistant conductor for the 2024-25 season. Naomi was recently announced as the National Youth Orchestra of Canada’s music director for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Naomi is a member of Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership program and was chosen by her mentor Yannick Nézet-Séguin as a member of the Orchestre Métropolitain’s inaugural orchestral conducting academy
