The LSU Symphonic Band begins the spring semester with a concert titled …from a long distance, exploring themes of distance, reflection, and connection through evocative compositions. The program opens with Chen Yi’s Spring Festival, a vibrant celebration of the Chinese New Year, followed by Susan Botti’s stirring Eye of the Hawk. The evening continues with Roshanne Etezady’s dynamic Parhelion and concludes with Kimberly Archer’s bold and adventurous Odyssey. Join us for an enchanting evening of saxophone mastery as Natalia Warthen takes the stage at the Regenstein Master Class Room. This special recital, part of her Master of Music studies under the guidance of Taimur Sullivan, promises to be a memorable showcase of talent and musical exploration. Accompanied by Nathan Canfield on piano, Natalia will present a diverse program including her own arrangement of J.S. Bach's Flute Sonata in E Minor, BWV 1034, Roshanne Etezady's "Streetlegal," a unique adaptation of Maurice Ravel's Sonatine for Soprano Saxophone and Piano by David Walter, John Anthony Lennon's "Distances Within Me," and Edison Denisov's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

This event is scheduled for Monday, June 3, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT, in the Regenstein Master Class Room, located within the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, 60 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL 60208. Join us for an enchanting evening of music with the Symphonic Band's second winter-quarter performance on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 7:30pm CST at the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Under the baton of Shawn Vondran, this concert promises a journey through a diverse musical landscape, beginning with Charles Ives's "Variations on America," a witty rendition that infuses the patriotic tune with unexpected harmonies and playful rhythms.

The night continues with Roshanne Etezady's "Against the Rain," a poignant piece inspired by Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem "Love Is Not All," exploring the depths of love's sacrifices and sufferings. The first half concludes with David Maslanka's "Traveler," a reflection on life's adventures, moving from vibrant energy to serene contemplation.

The second half is dedicated to Zhou Tian's "Sinfonia," a 2022 composition drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of cultural influences, including 1940s and '50s noir films, the bustling New York City subway, Shanghai's Mid-Autumn Festival, and the historic completion of the US's first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Tickets are priced at $6 for the general public and $4 for students with valid ID, but hurry as they are already sold out!
