Celebration! Join us for a delightful lunchtime concert showcasing a menu of British light music from three beloved composers. In honour of Edward Gregson’s 80th birthday, we present Partita, one of his earliest and most enduring works for brass band. Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite for Brass, composed 60 years ago for the Cornwall Youth Band, continues to charm audiences with its spirited character. We also feature Peter Graham’s Concerto for Euphonium, performed this afternoon by Oliver Hodgkiss, winner of the RWCMD Besson Brass Solo Competition.

Immerse yourself in the dramatic interpretations of "Firebird: Flames and Fury," a concert that takes you on a journey into conflict through a musical experience. Edward Gregson's 1983 Trumpet Concerto features agitated rhythms and melodies, driving a captivating back-and-forth with the orchestra. Travel back in time to 1893 with Jean Sibelius' Karelia Suite, which tells the story of Karelia’s revolt against oppression. Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite is the mythical tale created from Russian folklore about a brave prince and a clever Firebird working together to defeat tyranny and bring freedom to the oppressed. Join us for a night of meaningful and courageous musical conversations.

From ancient times to the present day, music and dance have captured the spirit of humanity. Today's concert showcases three contrasting composers: Malcolm Arnold, Hans Werner Henze, and Edward Gregson. Arnold's Four Scottish Dances, composed in 1957, draws its inspiration from traditional Scottish folk dances. Henze's Ragtimes and Habaneras, written in 1976, was famously performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the BBC Proms that same year. Finally, Gregson's Dances and Arias merges lively, energetic dances with soulful, contemplative melodies, bringing the concert to a rousing conclusion.

The University Band celebrates our ever-evolving world with their program Change.
