The marimba is a beautiful, fascinating instrument that doesn’t always get the spotlight,  but in this concerto by the contemporary American composer Kevin Puts, we get to hear it in all its glory. The concert opens with Nancy Galbraith’s Midnight Stirring, another work that shows just how refreshing contemporary composition can be when a composer  embraces a straightforward American sound.  The second half of this concert takes us back to the classics, with music by the little known Italian composer Nicola Porpora (Haydn’s teacher) and the great Wolfgang  Amadeus Mozart writing at the height of his powers.

Elizabeth Crafton, from Savannah Georgia, is an undergraduate student at the Curtis Institute of Music and currently studies with Jennifer Montone and Jeffery Lang. Elizabeth has performed with many orchestras and summer music festivals including the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, and the National Repertory Orchestra.

Pianist Natasha Paremski returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This is the only Rachmaninoff work for piano which Natasha has yet to perform with The Syracuse Orchestra. The show opens with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and concludes with Respighi’s famous Pines of Rome.

This recital will feature pianist Nanette Kaplan Solomon performing solo piano music by Nikolai Lopatnikoff (1903-1976), who was an internationally known Neoclassical composer and beloved composition professor at CMU (then Carnegie Tech) from 1945-1969, and solo and four-hand piano music by Nancy Galbraith, current long-time distinguished Professor of Composition at CMU. Dr. Solomon's doctoral dissertation on the piano music of Nikolai Lopatnikoff is the only existing monograph on this important composer, and her CD recording of Lopatnikoff's piano music on the Laurel label has received outstanding critical reviews from Fanfare and other reputable magazines. Dr. Solomon has been performing the music of Nancy Galbraith for the last 20 years, having performed her Piano Sonata No. 1, Three Preludes, Atacama Sonata for Flute and Piano, and with Slippery Rock University, commissioned Galbraith's Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble, which she also premiered.

The Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble performs music composed in the last twenty years in concerts that feature multidisciplinary collaboration, technology, improvisation, and theatrical elements. The ensemble often highlights the work of students and faculty.
