The culmination of decades-long artistry and mentorship, The Maestro and His Maestro showcases the synergy between Maestros Lawrence Golan and Robert Spano as they spearhead an inspiring performance that charts the generations. Conductors from the DPO’s 4th Annual International Conducting Workshop will trade off movements within a program which spans musical eras and genres, competing for a chance to return and conduct the orchestra at a future DPO concert in 2024-25.

Join the York Symphony Orchestra for an enchanting evening as they present "Mozart’s A Little Night Music" at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. This captivating concert is part of the 2023-24 Classical Series, scheduled for Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 7:30 PM EST. The performance promises to be a memorable journey through a selection of classical masterpieces, lasting approximately 2 hours, including an intermission.

The evening’s program features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s cherished "Eine kleine Nachtmusik," known for its lively and serenading melodies. Alongside Mozart, the orchestra will explore Antonin Dvořák’s "Serenade for Strings," which combines rhythmic elements of Czech folk music with joyous melodies. The concert will also pay homage to indigenous cultures with Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s "Chokfi," a piece that personifies the rabbit trickster of Southeast American Indian folklore. William Grant Still’s "Ennanga" for Harp, Piano, and Strings, named after the African harp, brings spirited harmonies inspired by African heritage. Bao Yuankai’s "Going to the West Gate," based on a Chinese folk song, adds a touch of melancholic beauty to the evening.

Under the baton of the esteemed conductor Lawrence Golan, known for his dynamic and engaging conducting style, the York Symphony Orchestra is set to deliver a performance that transcends cultural boundaries and celebrates the universal language of music. Harpist Elizabeth Etters Asmus, with her profound musicality and expertise, will be among the featured artists, adding a layer of enchanting harp melodies to the evening.

This program featuring the YSO string section opens with Mozart’s famous serenade, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, and closes with another classic of string orchestra repertoire, Dvořák’s Serenade in E major. Between are works by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Chinese composer Bao Yuankai, 19th-century Mexican composer Ricardo Castro, and the ‘dean of
African-American composers,’ William Grant Still, whose Ennanga
(African Harp) will be performed by YSO harpist Jill Whitman.
