For world-renowned guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli, Tony Bennett was more than simply an influence. Pizzarelli’s late father, the revered guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, was a frequent sideman for the legendary singer, appearing on albums including 1960’s To My Wonderful One and 1969’s I’ve Gotta Be Me. John got his own opportunity to accompany Bennett for a radio broadcast that also featured pianist Ralph Sharon and bassist Jay Leonhart.

In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, Pizzarelli has appeared on recordings for major pop names. For example, Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Van Ronk. He has also worked with leading jazz artists such as Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, and Johnny Frigo. Also, Buddy DeFranco, Harry Allen and of course his father Bucky Pizzarelli.

Mr. Pizzarelli salutes the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, performing with an excellent 17-piece big band that kicks with a brawling, Count Basie-like exuberance. He will play songs written for Sinatra including Witchcraft, Wee Small Hours and Ring a Ding Ding, salute his collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim and will also play a number of his signature Sinatra at the Sands arrangements. Additionally, the event will feature a selection of more recent movie songs like “With a Wink and a Smile” from Sleepless in Seattle, “When Somebody Loved Me” from Toy Story 2, and a rousing suite of songs from Rogers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma. Since its inception, the JazzMN Orchestra has presented more than 80 concerts in its main series with dozens of additional performances at jazz and art festivals around the Twin Cities. You don’t want to miss John Pizzarelli as he brings his latest album Stage & Screen to SOPAC!

Finding inspiration from classic Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, Stage & Screen’s cleverly chosen repertoire spans nine decades of American music from the 1925 musical No, No, Nanette to Jason Robert Brown’s Hollywood in Vegas (2013).  In between, there are pieces by iconic songwriters and composers like Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein, Sammy Cahn, and Jule Styne, as well as songs immortalized in films like Casablanca.

John Pizzarelli has been entertaining audiences for over 40 years, singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing inventive guitar. With sparkling swing and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell is among the greatest interpreters of American popular song.   Together, they pay homage to Nat King Cole and the legendary singers who appeared on his popular TV show. The concert includes Cole’s most memorable hits such as “Route 66,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right” and “Paper Moon,” along with the timeless works from Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee—the iconic Ladies of Song.
