John Pizzarelli’s newest show with his trio focuses on music from the Broadway stage and the Silver Screen. The evening will feature fresh versions of great standards such as “Where or When,” “Just in Time,” and “As Time Goes By,” paired with some newer Broadway songs that include “I Love Betsy” from Honeymoon in Vegas. Additionally, the event will feature a selection of more recent movie songs like “With a Wink and a Smile” from Sleepless in Seattle, “When Somebody Loved Me” from Toy Story 2, and a rousing suite of songs from Rogers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma. This program fully encompasses almost every decade from the 20’s to today, providing a musical discovery for audience members at every concert, all performed by an impeccable trio that has thrilled the world over with their singular brand of swinging jazz!

Since its inception, the JazzMN Orchestra has presented more than 80 concerts in its main series with dozens of additional performances at jazz and art festivals around the Twin Cities. Finding inspiration from classic Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, Stage & Screen’s cleverly chosen repertoire spans nine decades of American music from the 1925 musical No, No, Nanette to Jason Robert Brown’s Hollywood in Vegas (2013).  In between, there are pieces by iconic songwriters and composers like Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein, Sammy Cahn, and Jule Styne, as well as songs immortalized in films like Casablanca.

John Pizzarelli has been entertaining audiences for over 40 years, singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing inventive guitar. With sparkling swing and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell is among the greatest interpreters of American popular song.   Together, they pay homage to Nat King Cole and the legendary singers who appeared on his popular TV show. The concert includes Cole’s most memorable hits such as “Route 66,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right” and “Paper Moon,” along with the timeless works from Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee—the iconic Ladies of Song.
