Guitarist Marc Teicholz was awarded first prize at the 1989 International Guitar Foundation of America Competition, the largest, most prestigious contest of its kind in the United States. He was also a prize winner at the 1991 New York East-West Artists Competition.

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of vocal music as Risha Hussain, a talented soprano from the Northwestern Bienen School of Music, presents her Bachelor of Music recital. This captivating event will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room.

Under the guidance of her mentor, Nancy Gustafson, Risha will perform a diverse program that showcases her versatile vocal range and emotional depth. The recital will feature a selection of works by composers such as Léo Delibes, Fernando Obradors, Fernando Sor, Gioachino Antonio Rossini, Giovanni Sgambati, Antonio Vivaldi, Jules Massenet, Edvard Grieg, and Franz Schubert. Highlights include the hauntingly beautiful "Sposa son disprezzata" from Vivaldi's Bazajet, the poignant "Élégie" by Massenet, and Schubert's virtuosic "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen."

Risha will be accompanied by an ensemble of talented musicians, including Miguel Rodriguez on flute, Andrew Kang on clarinet, Emily Reader on harp, Eli Oesterheld on guitar, with Olga Sklyanskaya and Rena Maduro on piano, and Felix Garkisch on violin.

This event is free and open to the public, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience the next generation of classical music talent. No tickets are required, and for those unable to attend in person, a live stream of the recital will be available.

This concert's program was inspired by the rich diversity found in guitar repertoire, featuring pieces that display standard solo classical repertoire, guitar accompaniment, idiomatic studies, and singing while playing. Featured composers range from Bach all the way to Egúrbida, a contemporary Puerto Rican composer, with the premier of 2 new guitar studies written by James O'Malley Gorbea. The title of this recital, "A Mi Manera", was inspired by the Gipsy Kings cover of "My Way".

A renowned guitarist and pedagogue, Raphaella Smits plays worldwide on eight-string guitars and historical instruments. Alongside her international touring career, she has recorded more than 25 albums to great acclaim. Smits is recognized as a gifted teacher of both guitar and chamber music, frequently serving on the juries of prestigious international music competitions. She taught at the Lemmens Institute in Belgium for 36 years and continues to give master classes across Europe, the Americas, and Japan. In 1986, Smits was the first woman to win the first prize of the Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition in Spain, earning praise from chairmen Andrés Segovia and Narciso Yepes. Smits was recently awarded at the Festival Guitarras del Mundo in Argentina for her unique contributions to guitar music and culture.
