Washington, DC-born and North Carolina-raised vocalist and composer Christie Dashiell lives at the musical crossroads of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel and soul. Known for her improvisational prowess and effortlessly rich and clear tone, she has become one of the most sought-after artists on the scene today. Growing up in a musical family, Christie has been singing all of her life. She is the third of four multi-talented and musical children of jazz bassist, Carroll Dashiell, Jr. Her musical lineage is deeply rooted.

Drummer and composer Quincy Davis brings his poignant work Empathy Suite to Dizzy’s Club. The events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic loss of George Floyd inspired Davis to create a piece reflecting the power of compassion and empathy. Featuring innovative melodies and powerful lyrics, Empathy Suite captures different facets of empathy, drawing inspiration from Maya Angelou, Kobe Bryant, Lao Tzu, the Dalai Lama, and other icons. This performance is made possible through grant funding from the University of North Texas Initiative for the Advancement of the Arts.

This collaboration between UMS and the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance features a new commission and world première by American composer Nkeiru Okoye. When the Caged Bird Sings fuses elements of oratorio, theater, and opera in a multi-movement musical ceremony of sorts, which Okoye describes as “a gathering” that invokes the ritual of the concert experience as a ritual of community.

Step back in time and relive the golden era of music with “Nat King Cole Christmas” presented by Magic 101.3. This special concert, set to take place at The Louisville Palace Theatre on December 20, 2023, at 7:30 PM, is a tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole. Conducted by Gabriel Lefkowitz and featuring Terri Lyne Carrington on drums as the Music Director, the evening promises a mix of holiday and iconic songs performed by a stellar array of Grammy-honored musicians and all-stars from the music and theater worlds. With historical images, TV footage, and Nat’s most memorable hits, this concert is both an aural and visual homage to a musical icon.

A dynamic and influential a cappella ensemble deeply rooted in Black history and culture, the GRAMMY-winning Sweet Honey in the Rock make their Miner Auditorium debut with a series of concerts celebrating five decades of musical alchemy.

Founded in 1973 by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, the group’s name is derived from a biblical passage that refers to a land rich with sweet honey and in which the rock symbolizes strength and resilience. This imagery reflects the essence of their music, which is both sweet and powerful, infused with spirituality and social consciousness.
