The Johns Hopkins Billie Holiday Center for the Liberation Arts holds its sixth annual Jazz in the Square concert event, Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm EDT at Lafayette Square, Lafayette and Arlington streets, in West Baltimore. Once again, Peabody faculty artists are featured performers: Nasar Abadey and his quartet, featuring Sean Jones and Charenée Wade.

Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone were among the most influential and popular singers of their times. Pioneering Women in Jazz celebrates the enduring legacies of these music icons with performances of their classic songs, including Bessie Smith’s “Downhearted Blues,” Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” and Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam.” Pioneering Women in Jazz features three dynamic vocalists, Charenée Wade, Vanisha Gould, and Tahira Clayton, each a rising star in her own right, together with a 6-piece all-female ensemble. Bessie, Billie & Nina will entertain and inspire you through its celebration of the exceptional artistry of these trailblazing singers.
