A bel canto classic that guarantees astounding singing, Donizetti’s ebullient comedy returns in Laurent Pelly’s “totally delightful” (The New York Times) production, with soprano Erin Morley making her Met role debut as Marie, the intrepid “daughter of the regiment.” She stars alongside high-flying tenor Lawrence Brownlee as her admirer, Tonio, with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote as Marie’s long-lost mother, the Marquise of Berkenfield, and bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as the gruff but goodhearted Sgt. Sulpice.

French director Laurent Pelly’s stylish production, set in the late 1930s just before World War II, is back by popular demand! The Santa Fe Opera is proud to present the following American debuts: Italian bass Riccardo Fassi in the title role and French baritone Florian Sempey as Count Almaviva. Sopranos Ailyn Pérez, Marina Monzó and Jacquelyn Stucker take on the role as Countess Almaviva. Former apprentice Liv Redpath will sing Susanna and Chinese mezzo-soprano Hongni Wu sings Cherubino. Music Director Harry Bicket conducts the international cast.

Lyric Opera of Chicago is delighted to bring this production of Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment — bel canto opera’s equivalent of vintage champagne — to the city for the first time. Marie, the lovable, irrepressible spirited heroine — a foundling, raised by soldiers — loves handsome Tonio. Things get complicated when the Marquise carts her off to refine her with a “proper” education. In one exhilarating number after another, Marie throws off coloratura flourishes like shooting stars, while her tenor sweetheart pops out nine high Cs in a single aria! Bel canto superstar Lawrence Brownlee and comedic veteran Alessandro Corbelli partner with the dazzling Lisette Oropesa in her eagerly awaited Lyric debut. The marvelously stylish Speranza Scappucci conducts Laurent Pelly’s quick-witted, uproarious production.

The premiere performance of Rossini's opera buffa Il Turco in Italia at the New National Theatre, Tokyo. A tangled love affair develops through a series of ensembles as a complex cast of characters take the stage, including a playboy Turkish prince, a straight-laced husband being toyed with by his coquettish wife and the Turkish prince's former lover.

A fantastic opera in a prologue, three acts and an epilogue, Jacques Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann was performed on 10 February 1881 at the Opéra- Comique in Paris. The author had been dead for a few months and had not been able to complete the score on which he had worked on and off over the years. After a long tug-of-war between Opéra-Comique director Léon Carvalho and librettist Jules Barbier, the task of completing the work was entrusted to Ernest Guiraud, a friend of the late composer. Offenbach had composed a copious amount of music for the Contes without, however, managing to find a definitive version. The variability of content is reflected in the layout of the work, which is full of time jumps, interruptions and digressions in pure Hoffmann style. E.T.A. Hoffmann, an apex figure of German Romanticism, is the protagonist of the story set in various European cities in the early 19th century. While the Prologue and Epilogue take place in Nuremberg in Master Luther's tavern, where Hoffmann begins to recount his love affairs, the intermediate acts take place in Paris, Munich and Venice respectively, and feature female figures at the centre: Olympia, Antonia and Juliet, the women loved by the writer. A complex and layered work, steeped in bizarre situations, diabolical spells and visions, Les contes d'Hoffmann restores to the listener a variety of musical atmospheres full of enchantment.

Leading tenor Matthew Polenzani is her idealistic lover, the Chevalier des Grieux, with rising-star baritone Andrzej Filończyk as her stalwart cousin, Lescaut, in a breathtaking Belle Époque staging by director Laurent Pelly.

Faced with her indifference and fear oflosing her to a rival, he naively buys a love potion from Dulcamara, an itinerant doctor, without realising that it is... a simple bottle of wine!
