With spectacular mountain ranges and magnificent nature in the background, the title character in Lord Byron's drama Manfred wanders around and tries to forget. But not even magic can help him forget the past and his deceased beloved. In his Manfred symphony, Tchaikovsky gives musical expression to the torments of the soul, angels and demons, but also to rural idyll and the great, lost love.

The eternal call that never falls silent. It can be soft or loud, melancholic or combative. But the moment we listen to it, it becomes our own. Few instruments could be more primal than the horn. Initially an object of hunting, later of rites and ceremonies, its sound was a warning and a promise. In Jewish tradition, the shofar raises its voice in prayer. In "Niggun David," a wordless chant, the ram's horn becomes a medium, a spiritual echo of the longing for the absolute. Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6, however, strikes a different tone. Here, we hear the turmoil of the 20th century, the voice of a man
searching for truth amidst political storms. The symphony begins in somber contemplation, as if a call were coming from a distant world. But soon the mood changes – irony, mockery, and grotesque dances break through the gravity and reveal a world in which the tragic and the absurd are inextricably linked. The call of the music, however, remains, sometimes as a warning, sometimes as a desperate cry.

Those who seek authenticity when travelling can easily be misled: Richard Strauss was one of them when he thought he had heard an original Neapolitan folk song in Naples and incorporated it into his symphonic fantasy "Aus Italien". In fact, "Funiculì, funiculà" had been composed by Luigi Denza just a few years earlier, and in a less than popular context at that - as an advertisement for the new cable car up Vesuvius. Strauss' trip to Italy nevertheless represented a turning point in his work: "Aus Italien" brilliantly opens the series of tone poems with which he became famous.

The program concludes with Beethoven’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, a work that embodies both balance and charm. It marks a transitional moment in Beethoven’s career, bridging the Classical elegance of his early works with the bold, expressive style that would define his Romantic-era compositions.

CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.

Paul Huang was a recipient of a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Huang makes recent and forthcoming appearances with the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, Detroit Symphony with Leonard Slatkin, Houston Symphony with Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Rotterdam Philharmonic with Lahav Shani, Seoul Philharmonic with Markus Stenz, and return to the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan as its artist-in-residence. A frequent guest artist at music festivals worldwide, he recently stepped in for Anne-Sophie Mutter at Bravo! Vail Music Festival playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin as well as recital debuts at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and Aspen Music Festival, both to critical acclaim. He is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and plays on the legendary 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

You don't even need a ticket for these chamber music delicacies. Entry is free, but places are limited (and the seats even more limited!). The string octet offers the best of both worlds, combining the full resonance of a string orchestra with the soloistic virtuosity and clarity of a chamber music ensemble. Max Bruch, an incurable romantic, composed his swansong, the String Octet in B-Flat Major, towards the end of his life. A few years later, Dimitri Shostakovich would embrace modernity in his Prelude and Scherzo, opus 11. Reinhold Glière’s String Octet in D Major strikes a compromise between the two. While the fiery temperament is indisputably Russian, the lyricism harks back to German romanticism. Enjoy three key early 20th-century chamber pieces.

You will want to be present as we highlight one of our own—principal horn, Richard Britsch—who will take the limelight for Glière’s Horn Concerto with YOUR Grand Rapids Symphony. Considered the most important work for horn of the 20th Century, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful melodies and colorful orchestration. The program opens with Grażyna Bacewicz's Overture—an energizing work that was written in 1943, during World War II. Its bold melodies, driving rhythms, and expressive orchestration evoke hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The evening will close with Prokofiev’s last symphony—written when the composer was 61 years old.

To honor the historic milestone, the La Mirada Symphony will perform the West Coast premiere of Maria Newman’s “Our Rights, and Nothing Less,” written in honor of Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday. The program will also feature “Lyric for Strings” by George Walker, who was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

The evening begins with Midland Symphony Orchestra Principal Horn Kurt Civilette performing Glière’s stunning Horn Concerto, setting the stage for an unforgettable night of exploration and discovery.

"Man only plays when he is in the full sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays." These famous words come from Friedrich Schiller, and the program under the direction of our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach inspires us to many musical flourishes – with our wind players repeatedly shining through with their playful spirit. And the instrumental pieces hit the mark perfectly, for example in the overture from Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" from 1821: Here, bullets cursed by demonic powers decide the love life of a young hunter in a competition – but "the whole thing ends joyfully," as the composer noted. Afterwards, together with our solo horn player Andreas Kreuzhuber, we perform a fascinating concerto by Reinhold Glière: Although this virtuoso piece was composed in 1950, it is entirely imbued with a romantic spirit.

Since 2010, Anneleen Lenaerts has been the principal harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic, and in 2024 she visited the Musikkens Kammerklub in a concert with the Swiss flutist Emmanuel Pahud. Now she is the soloist in Glière's rarely performed but very beautiful harp concerto. Here the composer truly shows the full potential of the harp in a work that is both technically demanding and delightfully catchy.

Born into a family of musicians in Munich, her career began at an early age. Her breakthrough came at the latest with numerous prizes at the Sarasate, Paganini and Tchaikovsky competitions, which quickly took her to the world's most important stages as a soloist. As a soloist and chamber musician, Yuki Manuela Janke also inspires as concertmaster of the most traditional orchestras. Her interpretation of Richard Strauss' "Heldenleben" in the Golden Hall in Vienna with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Christian Thielemann attracted particular attention.
