This piece is set to premiere alongside Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, a masterpiece that was first performed in Prague in 1908 and is often referred to as the "Song of the Night" due to its evocative Night Music movements.

Since its formation by Claudio Abbado in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been at the heart of the festival, with musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) forming its core. This year, around 20 MCO musicians will participate in four orchestra concerts, bringing their exceptional skills and passion to the stage.

UK conductor-composer Jack Sheen makes his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a free evening concert at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios, with new works from younger composers concerned with the environment. Finnish composer Ville Raasakka’s Black cloud, under ground recreates field recordings made in an abandoned coal mine underneath a town in Pennsylvania, where in 1962 a fire broke out in an abandoned coal mine. Toxic smokes slowly began to seep into the homes of the residents, and people were relocated in 1984. The fire will continue to burn for an estimated 200-250 years. Join us for an extraordinary evening of contemporary music at the "musica viva: Johannes Kalitzke" concert, presented by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. This captivating event will take place on Friday, 10th November 2023, at 8:00 pm in the majestic Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence. An introduction to the evening's program will be offered at 6:45 pm, providing insights into the performances ahead.

The concert will showcase an innovative program beginning with Lisa Streich's "Jubelhemd, Concerto Grosso for trumpet, percussion, harp, viola, and orchestra." Streich, a recipient of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, is celebrated for her exploration of the beauty found in imperfection. Her piece, inspired by Austrian artist Markus Schinwald's work, promises a fusion of diverse sonic layers in a gesture of jubilation.

Following this, Johannes Kalitzke will take the stage in a dual role as both conductor and composer for the world premiere of his "Zeitkapsel, Dance of Death for large orchestra," a piece commissioned by Bavarian Radio’s musica viva series. This performance is anticipated to be a profound exploration of thematic depth and musical innovation.

After an interval, the concert will conclude with Luc Ferrari's "Histoire du plaisir et de la désolation for Orchestra," a piece that embarks on a sonic search for new sensuality, culminating in a dramatic rupture of conventional logic in the final Ronde de la désolation.

Performers for the evening include Marco Blaauw on trumpet, Dirk Rothbrust on percussion, Maria Stange on harp, Axel Porath on viola, and Johannes Schottke providing sound design, all under the baton of Johannes Kalitzke with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

This concert is a highlight of the Bavarian Radio’s musica viva series, renowned as one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for contemporary and future-oriented music. It promises an evening of groundbreaking performances and musical premieres that push the boundaries of the orchestral experience.
