Kick off our season of American icons with music from New York, by New Yorkers! We’re featuring music by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copland, all New Yorkers who created some of the most quintessentially American music of the 20th century. From their apartments in The Big Apple, they captured the sounds not just of New York but the American West and beyond. And in a tribute to the world beyond New York, we will perform Kansas-based composer Alyssa Morris’s Tlapali, Tlahuilli, a dazzling orchestral re-telling of the Aztec myth depicting how the world received its color and light, featuring the principal woodwinds of the SSO.

WE PRESENT STORIES of light, color, and hope in this concert featuring works by two Kansas composers. Gordon McQuere invites us to contemplate kindness, perseverance, and wisdom in his optimistic and
colorful Three Essays, and Alyssa Morris’s Color and Light (Tlapalli Tlahuilli) takes inspiration from the book “Musicians of the Sun” which details the Aztec myth of how the world received its color and light. We then present Brahms’s delightful Haydn Variations, a perennial symphonic favorite that shows off Brahms’s musical genius as he inventively riffs on a simple chorale, transforming it into a virtuos

Demarre McGill is internationally recognized as one of today's most compelling flutists as well as celebrated for his lyrical expressiveness and technical prowess. Currently serving as the principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, McGill has also appeared as a soloist with many of the nation’s leading orchestras. This performance is presented in collaboration with SFCM alumni, faculty, and students.

In their own unique ways, each of these pieces aim to emphasize the beauty of life and the natural world, conveying moments of innocence and transformation through music.

Love is in the air for this program laced with romance. Turina’s Scene Andalouse is luxurious and playful, while Morris’s Four Personalities explores the expressive side of the relationship between colors. “My loving wife Clara and I invite you to hear her six songs, beautifully sung through the voice of the oboe. I wrote my contrasting and vigorous Piano Quintet in a fit of inspiration for my virtuoso wife to premiere.”

Aaron Emerson presents "Painting With Sound," a D.M.A. oboe recital. Emerson will perform Nigel Westlake's Spirit of the Wild and Alyssa Morris' Collision Etudes and Brush Strokes. This recital is in collaboration with Leili Asanbekova (piano), Daniel Lopez (flute) and Dylan Tharp (bassoon).

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of oboe music featuring Cedar Turner, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Robert Morgan. This recital is set to take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT in the Regenstein Master Class Room at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University.

Cedar Turner will be performing an exquisite selection of pieces, showcasing the versatility and beauty of the oboe. The program includes Brian Raphael Nabors' Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Ruth Crawford-Seeger's Diaphonic Suite No. 1, Alyssa Morris' Shine, and Claude Arrieu's Suite en quatre, arranged by Louise-Marie Simon. Accompanying Cedar on this musical journey will be Haylie Wu on flute, Mingyao Liu on clarinet, Justice Gardner on bassoon, Blake Parker on vibraphone, and Kay Kim on piano.

This event is free and open to the public, with no tickets required. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be available, ensuring you don't miss out on this remarkable performance. The Regenstein Master Class Room, located in the Regenstein Hall of Music adjacent to the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, offers seating for 200 and is a premier venue for hundreds of performances each year.

**Event Description: ROCO Connections: Blossoms**

Join us for a captivating evening as ROCO’s Connections Series continues on January 27, 2024, in collaboration with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rienzi house museum. The concert will take place at 5:00 PM in the glorious ballroom of the Rienzi, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, located on Kirby Drive.

This special event, now at capacity, will feature a stunning program including Charles Loeffler's "Rhapsodies" and the world premiere of Nicky Sohn's "Colors of Life’s Garden," inspired by the plants and flowers in the 4.4-acre Rienzi Garden. The evening will also include performances of Margaret Bonds' "Troubled Water," Rebecca Clarke's "Morpheus," and Alyssa Morris' "Four Personalities: Yellow."
