The music of the Frenchman Francis Poulenc is playfully light and dance-like, often with wit and satire, yet varied and of different characteristics. He deliberately calls his four-movement composition a sinfonietta rather than a symphony, thus removing the heaviness from the terminology. Poulenc strings together colorful pieces and creates surprising twists.

The works of the 3rd Chamber Concerto are all about love and solidarity in word and sound: When Johannes Brahms set about composing the “Two Songs”, it was his close friendship with his long-time companion, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms wanted to create a musical monument to his love and composed the “Spiritual Lullaby” based on a text by Emanuel Geibel for his wedding, but withdrew the composition and revised it. The composer then published both songs together with “Quenched Longing” based on a text by Friedrich Rückert to mark another happy event: the baptism of his godchild, Joseph Joachim’s son. In both compositions, one can hear the unbridled joy of life, born of love. Leoš Janáček's (late) love for Kamilla Stösslová, who was almost 40 years younger than him, was, however, under a completely different, much worse star. In his second string quartet, with the programmatic nickname "Intimate Letters", his feelings for the young woman are omnipresent. Just a year before his death, Janáček left behind the frivolous testimony of a great love: eruptive, provocative and passionate.

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra kicks off the year with an original and captivating New Year's concert. Austria and France join hands in a festive celebration: traditional waltzes and polkas abound, complemented by the heartwarming music of Berlioz and Offenbach, creating a lively atmosphere. We applaud the bright sounds of Selina Ott, who shines in Henri Tomasi’s delightful Trumpet Concerto and engages in a spirited suite by Florent Schmitt with the orchestra. Together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Lio Kuokman, we usher in the New Year on this musical journey from Vienna to Paris."

Under the direction of Brad Hogarth, SFCM's wind ensemble presents music by Francis Johnson, Henri Tomasi and the world premiere of a new arrangement by Ursula Kwong-Brown. Brown's Cover the Walls, commissioned by SFCM, is a themed piece “inspired by Chinese poems that were carved into the walls of the detention center of Angel Island.” Trombone player Austin Talbot performs in this concert, featured in Tomasi's Trombone Concerto, as the winner of SFCM's concerto competition.

French composer César Franck’s Le Chasseur maudit — “The Cursed Hunter” — is based on a ballad about a man commits the grave sin of hunting on the Sabbath and is doomed to be eternally chased by demons. BSO Assistant Conductor Earl Lee leads the sultry, atmospheric 1949 Saxophone Concerto by French composer Henri Tomasi; making his BSO debut, American Steven Banks is one of today’s leading classical saxophone performers. The program closes with the emotional turmoil of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, which opens with the famous “fate” motif, and sweetened by the composer’s great gift for beautiful melody.

If you caught this sensational Venezuelan trumpeter in past seasons, you’ll already know that when he teams up with Domingo Hindoyan things tend to catch fire, so we’re thrilled to have him as our 2022/23 Artist in Residence. This concert begins with dancing in the streets of Rome before Pacho launches two dazzling bursts of fireworks into the mix, including the world premiere of a work he composed himself – an impressive flugelhorn concerto which features a different horn in each movement. Following the incredible reception of Domingo’s Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony last season, here comes the Third Symphony, with its heart-wrenching themes straight from the Hollywood era.

The return of Music Director Laureate Louis Langrée brings us a focus on Ravel’s music, showing us the different styles in which Ravel composed throughout his life. His Ma mère l’oye is no better example of this, as the composer transports you through a fairytale of sound worlds, each offering an endless source of wonderment. In a similar exploration of musical styles, the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto, performed by Principal Trumpet Anthony Limoncelli in his CSO solo debut, brings together a full range of colors and emotions. The program concludes with Ravel’s La Valse, swirling with elegance before gradually unraveling, and Boléro, Ravel’s most well-known composition, which grows from a single breath into a hypnotic blaze, its unforgettable melody passing through every section of the Orchestra.
