Shostakovich sustained a quiet resistance against the brutal oppression of the Soviet Union under Stalin, burying his objections under fastidious layers of symphonic elegance, as heard in the wartime Eighth Symphony.  Music Director Jonathon Heyward excavates the endlessly revealing layers of this modern masterpiece. The Trumpet Concerto from Shostakovich’s protégé Mieczysław Weinberg (a.k.a. Moisey Vainberg), featuring BSO’s Principal Trumpet Andrew Balio, leans on this Polish-Jewish musician’s family roots in Yiddish musical theater. 

Bso: Shostakovich Symphony No. 8

This concert features solo trumpeter Andrew Balio performing Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto. Mr. Balio performed a solo recital during the pandemic for our virtual concerts in 2021. We welcome him back and are excited to hear him ‘live’. We open with Patrice Rushen’s iconic Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory. This work is dedicated to and inspired by the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and includes a quote from his I Have A Dream speech. We conclude with Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C minor.

A concert of original transcriptions of J.S. Bach by Andrew Balio, principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony and the founder of the Future Symphony Institute.  Bach affirmed that "the aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."  Balio and organist Bruce Bengtson partner in an evening of this enduring, spiritual music.

Masterworks III pairs the familiar and the unfamiliar. Works by Haydn and Mozart, classical composers often associated with one another, are interspersed with two contemporary pieces by Joan Tower and a relative newcomer, Andre Myers.
