The San Luis Obispo Symphony announces the return of Pops-by-the-Sea on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the Avila Beach Golf Resort, where the San Luis Obispo Symphony will be celebrating their 60th year. Gates will be open at 2:45 PM and music will begin at 4:00PM. The SLO Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Andrew Sewell, will play music by John Williams, Aaron Copland, John Phillip Sousa, and more!
For 30 years, the San Luis Obispo Symphony’s family-friendly Pops-by-the-Sea concerts have entertained thousands of music lovers on the Central Coast. This year’s event honors that tradition and offers the community an afternoon by the sea of sun, fun, and great music.

French virtuoso violinist Gilles Apap (Arroyo Grande) joins SLO Symphony under the baton of Maestro Andrew Sewell, for a remarkable program of classical favorites, including Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. Gilles is known for his unique approach to music, delivering distinctive performances of the standard classical repertoire combined with genres such as jazz and folk from around the world, merging the borderlines between musical styles. This concert is sponsored by Peggy Lance Little, Thomas Miller and Pam Dassenko, and Len Jarrott. Programs are subject to change.

Celebrating Our Artists conducted by Maestro Andrew Sewell highlights SLO Symphony musicians as soloists, including Concertmaster Emily Lanzone, Principal Second Violin Timothy Shanks, Principal Oboe and English Horn Jessica Hoffman, Oboe Heidi Butterfield Yi, and Flute Carol Houchens. The program also includes SLO Youth Symphony Concert Strings performing side-by-side with their SLO Symphony counterparts.  On February 5, 2022, at 7:30PM, Sound the Trumpet brings noted soloist Andrew Balio, Principal Trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, joining the SLO Symphony under the baton of Maestro Andrew Sewell, for a program including Ewald’s Quintet No. 1 in B Flat Minor, Morris’ Motion for Wind Quartet, Wilder’s Octets, Neruda’s Concerto for Trumpet in E Flat, Strauss’ Serenade in E Flat, and Tomasi’s Concerto for Trumpet in C.
