Before every Masterworks Concert, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra will present pre-concert talks which help prepare you and deepen your understanding of the music to be performed in the program. Sometimes our guest soloists even join Maestro Hege for a discussion of their concerto collaboration! Free to all ticket holders, Concert Talks take place in the Concert Hall one hour prior to each Masterworks performance.

Fireworks indoors?! Indeed!  The quintessential love theme, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy is full of sweeping melodies that perfectly evoke the breathless passion of the two young lovers.  When Prokofiev premiered his Fifth Symphony in 1945—conducting it himself in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory—Prokofiev considered it the culminating accomplishment of his career, conceived “as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit … praising the free and happy man—his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul.” Others had even higher praise: after the U.S. premiere by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony, Prokofiev was pictured on the cover of Time magazine, and Koussevitzky called the work “the greatest musical event in many, many years. The greatest since Brahms and Tchaikovsky! It is magnificent! It is yesterday, it is today, it is tomorrow.”  The concert is rounded out with the Southern United States premiere of Daniel Perttu’s Valor, a powerful and lyrical work about heroism, including the battles heroes face.

Join us for an enchanting afternoon with the Clinton Symphony Orchestra as we present "Mystics and Fantasy" on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. This magical concert will take place at the Morrison High School Auditorium in Morrison, Illinois, and promises to be a delightful experience for the whole family.

Dive into a world where magic and music intertwine, featuring a mix of new and old mystics and fantasy-themed pieces. The highlight of the concert is "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" by Paul Dukas, famously used in Disney's animated film Fantasia. This captivating piece will be accompanied by two contemporary compositions: "The Three Virtues of Zarathustra" and "Nimue and Her Fairies," which draw inspiration from the legends of King Arthur. The concert will conclude with the overture to Beethoven’s ballet "The Creatures of Prometheus," bringing the event to a thrilling close.

This concert is an excellent opportunity for students, who are always welcome to attend for free. Adult tickets are available for $20, and a special half-price ticket offer is available for adults accompanying a student. Please inquire about this offer at the ticket table.

Immerse yourself in a captivating blend of classical guitar and choral splendor. Grisha Goryachev performs Rodrigo’s beloved Concierto de Aranjuez, a work of breathtaking beauty and Spanish flair. The evening also features Dan Perttu’s enchanting Nimue and Her Fairies and Mozart’s transcendent "Ave verum corpus." The grand finale is Dvořák’s stirring Te Deum, performed with Chorus Austin.
