This programme is a celebration of John Dowland and Johann Sebastian Bach’s legacy for the lute which the guitar is very fortunate to have inherited. Dowland and Bach were deeply inspired by the sensibilities of their time and their music offers a soundscape that retains the plucked nature of the lute whilst presenting these sensibilities with a different palette of colours unique to the guitar.

At the programme’s centre stand two monumental passacaglias: Bach’s famous Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor and the powerful Passacaille by Swiss composer Frank Martin (no relation to our soloist!) Written nearly two centuries later, Martin’s work refracts Bach’s great work through a twentieth-century harmonic language.

Few works in classical music inspire as much fascination as J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Acclaimed in The Strad as ‘a duo of rare ensemble and musical intelligence‘, the husband-and-wife artistic partnership of Hannah Roberts and Simon Parkin has gained great critical and public success both at home and abroad.

No strangers to the RNCM, both have a long relationship with the College. Hannah Roberts is Professor of Cello, appearing recently as a soloist for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with Manchester Camerata. Simon Parkin is a sought-after composer, arranger, and pianist, alongside his role as Deputy Head of Undergraduate Programmes. He celebrates his 50th anniversary working at the College alongside his 70th birthday this year.

Sound the trumpet! In the baroque era, every concert was a celebration, as composers and performers competed to dazzle, to move, and above all, to entertain their audiences. It was a Europe-wide phenomenon. In Germany, Telemann wrote music to feast by, and his friend Johann Sebastian Bach composed religious music as powerful and as heart-rending as any opera. And here in England, in 1717, King George I simply put an orchestra on a boat and sailed off up the Thames: the ultimate royal pleasure cruise, set to the irrepressible melodies of his favourite composer, George Frederic Handel.

Anton Bruckner dismissed his Symphony in F minor as a mere “student work”. Yet it is far more than that. The first symphony he completed, it reveals a composer setting out with extraordinary ambition – yet it was never performed during his lifetime. For conductor Simone Young, it testifies to Bruckner’s hope of establishing himself as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century: “It promises that perseverance and dedication to one’s calling will ultimately prevail.” This will be the symphony’s first performance by the BRSO. The concert will open with Bach’s Ricercar a 6 in Anton Webern’s colourful orchestral arrangement. In between the two works will be one of the great classics of the repertoire, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor – performed by Augustin Hadelich, whose intensity and sensitivity have established him as one of the outstanding violinists of our time.

Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos rank among the crowning achievements of the Baroque era. Richly expressive writing for strings and winds, virtuosic instrumental solos and rhythmic verve combine to form a cycle full of splendour and charm. Each concerto has its own distinctive scoring and character; together they reveal the remarkable stylistic range of the composer. Under the direction of Masato Suzuki, the legendary Bach Collegium Japan opens our Originalklang series with a performance of all six concertos in a single evening. Over the past decades, the ensemble has played a leading role in connecting European and Asian traditions of Baroque performance.

The Latin verb concertare, meaning to fight or to contend, underwent a complete reversal of meaning on its way into the Italian language, where it came to mean to agree with one another, to work together. The concerto, a compositional model that developed in Italy at the dawn of the Baroque, makes this transformation audible: it presents virtuosically competing individual voices that are purposefully resolved into consonant harmony.

In this new work from the celebrated Acosta Danza, the lush artistry of the Baroque period intersects with the energy, creativity and vibrancy of Cuban dance. Emerging from the 17th and 18th Centuries the creative movement was characterised by deep colour, elaborate detail and intricate decoration.

The show opens with the world premiere of a new work Pearls by Andonis Foniadakis which journeys to the rhythmic heart of Baroque. Set to Esteban Sallas’ Salve Regina, the piece explores the classic chaconne looping structure that circles through phases of acceleration, fracture and rebound. As the score shifts from Baroque lyricism toward Cuban drive, Foniadakis showcases the fusion between memory and contemporary.

Closing the programme is Goyo Montero’s powerful Chacona, a piece that was originally created for the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballett during Montero’s 17-year tenure as director. Chacona is the final movement of Bach’s masterwork Partita No.2 in D Minor for violin, accompanied in this performance by guitar and piano. Physically and musically demanding, it requires total cohesion from the ensemble of 16 dancers. Classical in sound and contemporary in heart, this is a mesmerising piece not to be missed.

BRSO Chief Conductor Sir Simon Rattle will open the season with Ludwig van Beethoven’s joyful Ninth Symphony, thus offering a first glimpse of the upcoming Beethoven Year 2027. For Rattle, it is the first – and perhaps the only – symphony that moves from immense heaviness and darkness to transcendental lightness, “as though it had taken a giant leap forward in time to Bruckner’s own Ninth Symphony and travelled into the idealistic world of the Enlightenment embodied by Mozart’s Magic Flute”. Rattle precedes Beethoven’s Ninth with Johann Sebastian Bach’s solemn cantata O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, performed on period instruments. For Beethoven’s Ninth, the BRSO then switches to modern instruments; the outstanding soloists are equally at home in both worlds.

The world held its breath in 2021 when the then–22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman, wearing a canary-yellow coat, recited her poem The Hill We Climb at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Her delivery felt like a blend of performance and sermon as Gorman sketched her own “American Dream”: “We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one.” She struck a nerve, responding to contemporary anxieties while offering hope. On 11 September 2026, the 25th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attacks on New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, Amanda Gorman will appear at Lucerne Festival. Together with cellist Jan Vogler, she will shape an evening of poetry and music. Gorman’s visionary verses meet Johann Sebastian Bach’s incomparable suites for solo cello — a bridge across 300 years. She recites between the movements, and at times even speaks directly into the music. The result is a dialogue that, as Vogler emphasizes, strengthens our faith in humanity and offers many surprising insights.
