Even musicians later considered geniuses had to apply officially for a position. This was the case for Johann Sebastian Bach, who in 1723 received confirmation of his long-awaited position as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. The following 27 years of his artistic career were henceforth characterized by service to the church, in particular the composition of cantatas for Sunday services. Around 200 of these multi-movement works for vocals and instrumental accompaniment by Bach have survived. These works—embedded in Christian doctrine—tell of central human experiences. The personal path from suffering to heavenly redemption—or, in universal terms, that life is not just a leisurely stroll—is the subject of the two cantatas presented by the Gaechinger Cantorey in Ludwigsburg's Schlosskirche. As an internationally renowned period ensemble, the ensemble impressively demonstrates the high artistry with which Bach traces the human journey to the "place of longing, heaven" in a timeless and still moving musical language.

The unique Orangery in the Rose Garden of Groß Siemen provides an outstanding backdrop for the rising stars of the "Young Elite." Here, the up-and-coming Hungarian pianist Mihály Berecz will showcase his talent to the audience in a solo recital. In addition to works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, a Hungarian composer is also included in the program: Béla Bartók, with his Three Etudes, Op. 18, intended to make a specific contribution to contemporary music. The result is a cycle that places the highest demands on the pianist's technical and interpretive skills.

Among the large number of performers who enter the active musical world each year, only a very few can be identified who will actually make it to the top. The best young talents compete in major competitions, often laying the foundation for a brilliant career. One young pianist who is currently making a name for himself in the music world is Jaeden Izik-Dzurko. Winner of the 2024 Concours musical international de Montréal and the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, he is currently performing in recitals and with major orchestras throughout Europe through the Steinway Prizewinner Concerts Network. With a multifaceted solo program, he will make his debut at this year's Rheingau Music Festival as part of our "Excellent!" series for award-winning young talents.

Danish cellist Jonathan Swensen—the recipient of multiple international awards, including the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant—will showcase his talent in the neoclassical brick church in the village of Nossentin. He will be accompanied by fellow Danish cellist Elias Holm. The Danish duo's program will take them on a journey through music history: from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, and Dmitri Shostakovich, they will perform significant works from the cello repertoire.

Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a scholarly composer, but also a popular one. In 1742, he wrote a "Cantate burlesque" in Leipzig, a roughly half-hour-long work later referred to as a peasant cantata . Its distinctive character is not only due to the Saxon dialect in which some sections are written, but also due to the inclusion of dance forms and folk song melodies.

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.

Some contemporaries never meet, others remain connected for life: For example, George Frideric Handel and George Philipp Telemann first met in Halle at the beginning of the 18th century and deepened their friendship through years of correspondence. Telemann was not only a passionate letter writer, but also learned to love gardening in his adopted home of Hamburg. From London, Handel supplied the amateur gardener with rare flower bulbs. In general, the friendship blossomed magnificently: there are 117 musical ideas that Handel adopted or parodied from Telemann. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra devotes itself to some examples of these, supplementing it with the third great composer of the time, Johann Sebastian Bach. Although Bach and Telemann did not exchange botanical gifts, they were just as close on a familial and musical level.

A single performance of one of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos offers a glimpse into the composer’s ability to push the concerto form forward. Hearing the complete grouping of the six Brandenburgs together offers an understanding of just how substantial Bach’s innovations were. The Brandenburg Concertos were written after the composer met the Margrave of Brandenburg, whose court was known for a substantial musical establishment. Bach reworked some previous materials into a group titled “Six Concerts for Several Instruments” and sent them off to the Margrave for consideration in 1721. Later dubbed the Brandenburg Concertos, they do indeed employ several instruments, in movements designed to showcase the characteristics of each, in solos or as part of new pairings. The first includes a pair of horns, instruments associated mostly with hunting calls, in a solo group with three oboes, bassoon and violin. No. 2, provides a challenging turn for solo trumpet along with flute, oboe, and violin. The third is a string concerto for three trios of violin, viola, and cello. Two flutes and solo violin are highlighted in Concerto No. 4, while No. 5 brings the harpsichord forward as a solo instrument, one of the first occasions the instrument had stepped away from a continuo role. No. 6 excludes violins altogether to focus on the voices of lower strings. The Margrave’s reaction to this enthusiastic offering is unknown, as there is no evidence that he responded to Bach’s submission or that the works were performed at his court.

Wait a moment, these are the first sounds of the »Christmas oratorio« which starts this concert in the middle of summer! Yes and no: Johann Sebastian Bach often ›recycled‹ his own music and used pieces he considered particularly successful, repeatedly in very different works. Ton Koopman, expert in historical Bach performance practice, has selected three secular cantatas by the Baroque master, which celebrate name-days and birthdays of the Saxon elector prince family and include so many well-known arias and chants.

Bach specialist Angela Hewitt is conductor and piano soloist in a program of works displaying the nimbleness and ingenuity of Bach, and his successor, Mozart, in composing concertos and chamber works that pushed musical boundaries. Bach has been the backbone of Hewitt’s career. She was immersed in his music through her father, a cathedral organist, and recalls, “I danced to Bach, sang Bach, played him on the violin and recorder . . . and in the end put all that experience into playing his music on the piano.” Her Hyperion recording of all the major keyboard works was hailed as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times) and she recently completed the Bach Odyssey, performing them in concerts worldwide. Hewitt leads from the keyboard in the D-minor and G-minor concertos.

Adélaďde Ferričre, a French percussionist of international renown, has performed in Brno once before, in early December 2023 at the Percussion Festival organised by the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts; she led a workshop and gave the closing concert, demonstrating her mastery of the marimba to great acclaim. While she is in town to perform Fazil Say’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra with Brno Philharmonic led by Tomáš Hanus (19 and 20 June 2025 at the Janáček Theatre), she has agreed to give a recital as part of the Philharmonic Chamber Series at Besední dům the same week. Her programme includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach and two luminaries of 20th-century music, the French composer of Greek origin Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) and the Italian composer Franco Donati (1927–2000).

He is by far the longest-serving active conductor in the world, but Herbert Blomstedt is not interested in such records: rediscovering the scores of the great composers again and again, sharpening the senses for this art and allowing everyone to share in the joy of making music – that’s what counts! Herbert Blomstedt turns 98 years old in July 2025. And since his time as chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, he has regularly returned to the podium of the Hamburg ensemble, accompanied by storms of applause from his audiences. After having to cancel once last season for health reasons, everyone is now eagerly awaiting Blemstedt’s next appearance.

Leopold Stokowski, a great admirer of Bach, examined his works under the microscope and, with the aid of modern instruments, "magnified" the Baroque master's sound world into an orchestral experience. Taneyev, on the other hand, demonstrated an affinity for historical compositional styles, whose polyphonic compositional artistry even inspired admiration from his teacher Tchaikovsky. The cantata, little known in this country, tells of the last hours of John of Damascus in a haunting choral-symphonic movement. In contrast, Shostakovich chose a very secular theme for his cantata, which, in a historicizing way, was a parable of the brutal oppression in his time.

On visiting Halle, the French star organist Benjamin Alard fell in love with the Reichel organ in the Marktkirche on which the young Handel played. Especially for this instrument he has compiled a programme of Baroque devotion and contemplation for which the chorale Jesus meine Freude sets the tone, but which also leaves scope for virtuosity – as with Handel’s organ concerto Op. 6, No. 4, and sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

During Bach’s composing years, French style and culture were highly influential in Germany, considered to add a refined touch to fashion, music, and more. So it is that French grace notes, like the rhythms of court dances, found their way into the music of a composer who never visited the country. Yet, as always, in his habit of exploring other genres and composers—he was known as a particular admirer of Couperin—Bach emerged as a distinctive voice. “What I call the French foam in Sebastian Bach’s music cannot—I must admit—be so readily lifted off that you can lay your hands on it. It is like ether: it permeates all, yet it is intangible,” German composer Karl Freidrich Zelter wrote in 1827, adding “his style is typically Bach, as is everything about him.”

This lighthearted matinee featuring everything from classical to pop will make the walls at the venerable Semper Oper shake! The exceptional all-round musician Friedrich Gulda, who passed away in 2000, wrote a five-movement Concerto for Cello and Brass Ensemble, which he dedicated to Heinrich Schiff in 1980. It begins in a funky rock tone and ends with an Alpine folk melody. The solo part will be played by Jan Vogler, not only the Intendant of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele and an outstanding cellist, but also a former student of Heinrich Schiff, bringing matters full circle.

Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has won legions of fans for his thoughtfully constructed, sublimely played recordings and videos. They have drawn accolades including Gramophone’s Artist of the Year and BBC Music Magazine’s Album of the Year in 2019. The 2025 OSL Bach Festival opens with an evening of Baroque brilliance as Lionel Meunier, founder of Vox Luminis, conducts a program of sacred works. Bach’s Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden—his profound reimagining of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater—is paired with Vivaldi’s luminous motets. Richly scored and emotionally vivid, the orchestral writing highlights the depth and elegance of the Baroque tradition.

Iveta Apkalna pursues milestones in organ music: Johann Sebastian Bach’s enormous Chaconne, César Franck’s ground-breaking »Prélude, fugue et variation« or Camille Saint-Saëns’ »Danse macabre« which exploits the symphonic sound possibilities of the organ. The titular organist of the Elbphilharmonie complements her solo programme with further pieces, which also showcase »her« instrument in full splendour.

Antoine Tamestit, violist and Artist in Residence 2024/25 of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, will play a special chamber concert in the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie on June 1. He will interpret works by Bach, Brahms and Waksman, among others.

Playing the organ demands not only virtuosity, but full-body involvement: in addition to the keys, the pedals have to be played with one’s feet. Thomas Ospital, originally from the French Basque Country, has mastered this art like few others. Born in 1990, he has been the titular organist at the great organ of Saint-Eustache in Paris since 2015. He calls artists playing the organ adventurers, since they always have to adjust to new instruments and new spaces – usually with very little time.

Scheduled for two performances, the series will commence on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 7:30 pm at The Wallis in Beverly Hills, followed by a matinee on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 4 pm at The Huntington's Rothenberg Hall in San Marino.

The program features the complete Bach Orchestral Suites, including Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C major, BWV 1066; Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067; Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068; and Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069. These pieces, known for their dazzling virtuosity and nuanced structure, stand as monuments in the classical music canon, offering an exhilarating adventure in counterpoint and harmony.

Under the baton of Jaime Martín, attendees will experience these masterpieces as they were meant to be heard, in an intimate setting that highlights their intricate beauty. Martín, celebrated for his insightful interpretations and dynamic conducting, will ensure this performance is a highlight of the season, appealing to both long-time classical music enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Tickets are available for both venues, with The Wallis hosting the Saturday performance and The Huntington, Rothenberg Hall welcoming guests for the Sunday matinee. Each venue offers a unique acoustic experience, ensuring that attendees can enjoy the Orchestral Suites in settings as majestic as the music itself.
