Some concerts you simply do not forget. Such was the case when Víkingur Ólafsson performed Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations at the 2023 Lucerne Festival. He did so in a way few had ever encountered before: as a vivid drama of the human condition, bringing a multitude of voices and characters to life and spanning the full range of emotions. He subsequently took the work on tour, performing it nearly 100 times around the world. “This piece is very close to me, so I’ve been giving it a bit of a rest because I wanted to have a fresh take on it,” Víkingur recalls. That time away from the Goldbergs gave rise to a bold idea. For the opening of Lucerne Festival Pulse — which he will curate for the next three years — Víkingur will join forces with his compatriot, the celebrated visual artist Olafur Eliasson, to reimagine Bach’s masterpiece as a Gesamtkunstwerk: a total work of art uniting sound and light projection. The setting for this 90-minute journey through time and space is the St. Pius Church in Meggen, with its delicate walls of translucent marble. Eliasson will respond to Víkingur’s playing in real time with his new, site-specific light installation, making each of the three performances unique. “I don’t really know how it’s going to turn out,” says Víkingur. “But that should be the spirit of the festival, to embrace the unexpected.”

Three spectacular soloists grace this program that follows a thread of musical styles from Baroque to early Classical. Co-concertmaster Nathan Olson is front-and-center in Bach’s Violin Concerto, whose poignant Adagio is one of his most sublime creations, with the solo violin exquisitely embroidering the underlying bass line. Our principal trumpet does the honors in Haydn’s tour de force concerto, traversing the instrument’s registers by leaps and bounds, but also bringing out its singing qualities. Mozart’s festive “Haffner” Symphony ends in a romping rondo, that Mozart said had to be played “as fast as possible.” In a dramatic concert aria, Kathryn Henry calls down the wrath of the gods on her perfidious lover. First appearing with the MSO in 2011, violin virtuoso Andrew Sords returns to Merchant Hall for his third performance, this time showcasing Richard Strauss’s vibrant and youthful Violin Concerto in D Minor. Composed when Strauss was only 17, the concerto may be less frequently performed than his later tone poems and operas, but it remains a captivating showcase of late-Romantic virtuosity and artistic promise.

The concert opens with Leopold Stokowski’s dramatic orchestral arrangement of J. S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, made famous by Disney’s Fantasia. Inspired by a walking tour through the ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh, Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A Minor (“Scottish”) brings the program — and the MSO’s season — to an exuberant close.

Ahead of a tour together across Europe, the remarkable piano duo brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen will join forces once again with Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a concert in London directed by Tomo Keller . The concert will feature Bach’s sprightly Double Keyboard Concerto No. 2 in C major and Mozart’s beautiful and playful Piano Concerto for three pianos in F major, written for the Countess Maria Antonia Lodron and her two daughters. The Concerto was later rearranged by Mozart himself and another pianist, incorporating the music for the Countess’ youngest daughter Giuseppa into the two other parts, which is the version the Jussen brothers will perform.

In one historic moment, Bach set the stage for the harpsichord to claim its place as a concerto soloist. The instrument's meteoric evolution from a harmony-playing member of the Basso continuo team to an elevated solo instrument worthy of concertos occurred when Bach composed a frenzied cadenza for the harpsichord in his Fifth Brandenburg Concerto. That work alone employs the harpsichord in three roles, to add harmonic texture, to share the spotlight with flute and violin as a melodic chamber instrument, and ultimately to completely take over the proceedings with a dramatic stepping out, front and center.

In turbo speed from the 18th to the 20th century: The Sonic.Art Saxophone Quartet moves effortlessly from Bach's B Minor Suite to Bernstein's West Side Story in the space of half an hour, condensing the sound colours of an entire orchestra onto soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. In the lunchtime concert, the four musicians from Belarus, Australia, Japan and Germany show how these worlds can be brought together with virtuosity. Their stylistic confidence, joy of playing and technical as well as musical perfection have already earned these well-rehearsed musicians a number of important international awards. We are looking forward to their debut at the Alte Oper and combine the event with an invitation to a small lunch in our foyers after the concert.

Winner of the Gold Medal at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Aristo Sham is a laureate of international competitions, with first-prize wins at Ettlingen, Gina Bachauer, and the Monte Carlo Music Masters, Sham has played across Asia, Europe, and the United States with the likes of the London Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. The son of a piano teacher, Sham began lessons at age 3 and was competing and concertizing by age 10. Soon after, he was featured in the UK Channel 4 documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies. Balancing piano with other interests, Sham earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University and a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory. He proceeded to study at the Ingesund School of Music in Sweden and earn an artist diploma from the Juilliard School. While pursuing a career as a pianist, Sham continues to enjoy other interests such as travel, aviation, gastronomy, oenology, and language.

What hardly anyone knows: nowhere else (outside Argentina) is as much tango played and danced as in Finland, nowhere else in the world is so much coffee and milk drunk, and what was previously only known to the initiated: one of the best baroque orchestras comes from Helsinki! In 1989, news of the historically-informed performance practice also reached Finland; young professional musicians founded an ensemble that was called the ‘Sixth Floor Orchestra’ for 20 years, named after the practice room (without a lift!). Initially they gave guest performances in neighbouring Scandinavia, but the unconventional group soon made a name for itself in Canada and China with excellent reviews. They have brought Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann with them to the concert in Frankfurt, where the overture, concerto and suite will give them ample opportunity to demonstrate how double dotting, ornamentation and historically informed bowing is done in Finland. The connection with water and tides is certainly felt more intensely on the Nordic coasts, which is why Telemann's orchestral suite ‘Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth’ from 1732 is a fitting homage to the all-connecting ocean. ‘Approaching a musical work is a lifelong journey,’ says Fazıl Say. And that is why the Turkish pianist's exploration of Bach's Goldberg Variations is far from over after his acclaimed recording, which he released in 2022. He set the bar high for this ‘musical and mathematical masterpiece’ back then - and the ambition remains: ‘My interpretation should convey the unique song, dance and story of each individual part of the work.’ Fazıl Say took on the task comparatively late in his musical career and felt up to the Goldberg Variations thanks to his enormous wealth of experience. Incidentally, this valuable wealth of experience also includes Say's own compositional activity. The pianist will give a small insight into this facet of his artistic work in the concert with his own works.

After the opening tour of their »Beethoven 27« project in November 2024, Jan Caeyers and the orchestra he founded, Le Concert Olympique, will return to the Elbphilharmonie together with Kit Armstrong. Jan Caeyers, a recognised Beethoven specialist, has set himself a special goal with the »Beethoven 27« project, which will run for several years: With 27 works from the pen of the great composer, he wants to build bridges to the 27 member states of the European Union. As in all concerts of the BEETHOVEN27 project, Kit Armstrong will open the concert with a prelude and fugue from Bach’s Well-Tempered Piano. This is not only a reference to the important significance this iconic piano music had for Beethoven, but also serves as an opening ritual to get musicians and audience in the right mood.

The sonata by the Venetian composer Dario Castello, born in 1602, offers an enormous range of emotions. In Widor's organ symphony from 1878, a vast array of stops are pulled out around a chorale-like theme, creating a brilliant sonic experience. Berio's "Sequenza" from 1966 explicitly prescribes elements of theatrical performance, including conscious breathing and vocal technique. The two organ movements, published only after Mendelssohn's death, were combined into a single sonata in 1993 with a new instrumentation – and represent a compelling musical experiment.
