The cantata was composed in 1725 in Leipzig for the third Sunday after Advent. The chorale upon which it is based is a hymn dating back to pre-Reformation days and is woven into pieces by several composers Bach admired including Lassus and Schutz. Its distinctive melodic shape and harmony elicit great energy in Bach’s writing whilst its central duet for alto and tenor depict two souls drawing close to heaven.

Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto is full of charm and virtuosic lightness. Fast, playful rhythms and tension-filled exchanges between the strings and the continuo ensure pure listening pleasure. With a Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, also known as the "Jeunehomme Concerto," Mozart demonstrates his genius in handling the piano as a solo instrument: The first movement begins with a powerful dialogue between the orchestra and the soloist, setting the tone for the entire concerto. Particularly in the second movement, Mozart's ability to lead melodies is evident, while the finale creates a lively and spirited atmosphere. In addition to these highlights of the Baroque and Classical periods, the premiere of a short piece by the sixteen-year-old Georgian composer Tsotne Zedginidze will be performed in this concert by the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, with Zedginidze also appearing as a soloist on the piano.

The cimbalom is a true chameleon: Like only the piano, the Hungarian dulcimer feels at home in all genres and styles. And so does Áron Horváth, who, as the European Concert Hall Organization's "Rising Star," tours the continent's major concert halls. With his World Music Quartet, the young cimbalom virtuoso will explore jazz and folk music from Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria at the Elbphilharmonie.

Bach's works are of such grandeur and fascination that the choice of instruments on which they are played quickly becomes irrelevant. This is especially true given that Bach himself wrote many pieces for a variety of instruments. The Finnish accordion virtuoso Janne Rättyä was therefore inspired to create unusual Bach arrangements. He also tackled the wonderful piano Petitesses of Henri Dutilleux, as well as Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, which perfectly complement the Hungarian-inspired finale in Brahms's masterful String Quintet.

Austrian cellist Valerie Fritz loves the extraordinary, the unusual. Even at the beginning of her studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg, she knew that a classical career with the standard repertoire was out of the question for her. Her self-confidence has already taken the young artist far: she has been nominated by the Elbphilharmonie, among others, and is a "Rising Star" in the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO) season. With accordionist Goran Stevanovich, she explores the spatial, acoustic, and interpersonal aspects of the concert setting with music from Bach to the present day.

Twenty years after his participation in the inauguration of the restored great organ of the Philharmonic Hall of Liège, Benoît Mernier, organ professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, brings J.-S. Bach into dialogue with Romantic composers who were inspired by him: Mendelssohn, who was influenced by the rediscovery of the St. Matthew Passion , Brahms, who entrusted his musical testament to the organ in the form of chorales, Widor, who transcribed for organ the finale of this same Passion , and Franck, who wrote a Third Chorale in the form of a tribute to J.-S. And so the NDR Vokalensemble groups its Christmas concert around Johann Sebastian Bach’s motto »Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied«. Bach has two choirs compete with each other in the praise of God. And the magnificent final fugue »Alles was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn« with its virtuoso colouratura really hardly gives the singers a chance to catch their breath.

The Hamburg-based Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, with Julian Prégardien in the role of the narrating Evangelist and conductor Lionel Sow, who currently shapes the French choral scene like no other, brings this classic to the Elbphilharmonie and complements it with contemporary versions of traditional Christmas carols such as "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen."
