Noe Music’s Piano Portraits series concludes with an unprecedented two-concert weekend featuring pianist and composer Dan Tepfer, renowned for his genre-defying brilliance and deep musical curiosity. On Saturday at 8pm, Tepfer presents Inventions / Reinventions, offering personal interpretations and spontaneous improvisations on J.S. Bach’s Inventions. The following Sunday at 4pm, he performs Goldberg Variations / Variations, blending Bach’s masterwork with his own improvisational responses. Performed on Noe Music’s magnificent Steinway Model D, each concert promises a unique experience where tradition meets innovation. As The New York Times notes, Tepfer “combines superb technique with a complex set of impulses: he’s a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.” Come once or come twice—no two moments will be the same.

Step into a world of musical discovery with Víkingur Ólafsson, the acclaimed Icelandic pianist whose rare blend of technical mastery and poetic sensitivity has captivated audiences around the globe. Hailed for his visionary artistry, Ólafsson has amassed over one billion streams and earned some of the highest accolades in classical music, including the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his Goldberg Variations, BBC Music Magazine’s Album of the Year, and two Opus Klassik Awards for Solo Recording of the Year. Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Israeli conductor Bar Avni and South Korean cellist Hayoung Choi bring female power to the stage – with a program that showcases everything an orchestra has to offer. Bach opens the evening, but not as we know it: Ottorino Respighi takes the famous Passacaglia to a new level, orchestrating it grandly and majestically, with new colors and nuances. Then comes Witold Lutosławski's Cello Concerto! Not a classical solo concerto, but a dramatic duel, orchestra against soloist, complete with attacks, lyrical moments, and explosive eruptions of sound. A musical exchange in which every note is charged with high tension. And finally: Tchaikovsky's Pathétique. His last work – and arguably his most personal. Nine days after the premiere, he died under mysterious circumstances. The final movement sounds like a requiem: deeply sad, somber, and moving. It couldn't be more dramatic.

Formed in Paris in 2015, Le Consort is an early music ensemble dedicated to the quintessential chamber music genre that reigned supreme in the Baroque era: the trio sonata. Made up of two violins, a cello and a harpsichord, the ensemble’s diverse repertoire includes trio sonatas from Italy, France, Germany and England, which represent the essence of Baroque chamber music., Le Consort’s Music in the Park Series program highlights the works of well-known composers who helped define the genre, such as J.S Bach, Georg Phillipe Telemann and Francesco Geminiani, as well as those whose works remain unknown and often unpublished, such as Giorgio Gentili, Nicola Porpora, and Michel-Pignolet de Montéclair.

Around 250 years separate the Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach from the Hungarian composer György Ligeti, one of the most distinguished representatives of New Music in the 20th century. Yet they have something in common: the radical concentration of compositional means with which they advanced into new realms of expression. It is therefore a fascinating dialogue when Bach's famous "Goldberg Variations," a crown jewel of keyboard literature to this day, encounters György Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1. While Bach uses a simply enchanting melody, which he develops into 30 variations, Ligeti takes a short four-note motif, which he then allows to undergo a series of metamorphoses.

Too operatic, too dramatic, not appropriate for the occasion – the worshippers at Leipzig's St. Nicholas Church were not enthusiastic on Good Friday in 1724 when Johann Sebastian Bach had his "St. John Passion" performed there for the first time. Indeed, Bach goes beyond a simple setting of the Passion of Jesus and fully exploits the dramatic potential inherent in the text of the Gospel of John, using all musical means at his disposal. The numerous choral scenes, in particular, lend the work an almost theatrical impact. And although it is a biblical story that is being told here, it is the great, universal human themes that are at stake: loyalty and betrayal, suffering and compassion, denial and forgiveness.

Our soloist for this concert is Jacqueline Rodenbeck, a Tucson native and winner of the  most recent Sphinx Concerto Competition. Jackie will perform one of the all-time favorite  solo works in the repertoire, Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. This concerto gets off  to a fiery start, so appropriately enough, we’ll lead into it with Gluck’s “Dance of the  Furies” from his opera Orpheus and Eurydice.

This will be a dazzling performance on our very own queen of instruments! Our guest is the Spaniard Juan de la Rubia, organist at the famous Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona. He begins his multifaceted program with the magnificent overture to Handel's 1743 psychological drama "Samson." A superb example of French Renaissance music is Eustache du Caurroy's 1610 Fantasia on the then-popular and enchanting song "Une jeune fillette." Profound emotion stands alongside explosive outbursts in Bach's legendary Chaconne in D minor. Charles Tournemire never wrote down his choral improvisations, such as the one on the Easter sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes"—they survive only because he recorded them as early as 1930. Jehan Alain, who died young in World War II, wrote impressive variations on a folk song by the 16th-century master Clément Janequin.

As the long-time artistic director of Brussels' La Monnaie Opera House until 2007, he also worked in the opera world, but his original profession was and remains that of an organist. As such, he has earned an outstanding reputation as an expert in both early and contemporary music.

In his debut with the Seattle Symphony, Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni is joined by an Italian soloist who is also performing her first concert with the orchestra: Francesca Dego. She proves her power to effortlessly fascinate audiences with her prize-winning interpretation of Busoni’s Violin Concerto, a tour-de-force of dark Romanticism and crackling energy. Next is the masterful Piano Quartet No. 1 by Brahms, who greatly influenced Busoni. The 12-tone composer Schoenberg, who argued for Brahms’ status as a major formal innovator, arranged this version for orchestra with great respect for Brahms’ own instrumentation style. In a similar vein, Webern’s moody chamber orchestra arrangement of Bach’s Ricercare a 6 from The Musical Offering is an intriguing take on Baroque music by a composer best known for atonal radicalism.

Learn to ‘listen differently’ as the Philharmonia’s Featured Artist Víkingur Ólafsson celebrates the 100th birthday of György Kurtág. 

Ólafsson’s meticulous and deeply personal performances and recordings have encouraged his many fans to listen anew to music ranging from the 17th century to the present day. And the music of Hungarian composer György Kurtág, the concentrated essence of an era-defining career spanning seven decades, addresses the phenomenon of sound and the act of listening itself.  

In this 45-minute concert, explore a web of composers from across the centuries paying tribute to those who came before them.

Pergolesi's incomparable setting of the Stabat Mater rose to great fame immediately following the composer's untimely death at the age of 26. Known for its beautiful arias and duets for soprano and alto, the writer and composer Jean-Jacques Rousseau praised the opening movement as "the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer." The uniquely captivating music of Pergolesi's setting attracted Johann Sebastian Bach about a decade later, inspiring him to compose an arrangement of the instrumental parts that included a very elaborate part for the violas. After all, Bach was a fine violist himself, and he must have yearned for the opportunity to contribute to Pergolesi's beautiful music in a way that would flatter its composer.

Pianist Imogen Cooper is a peerless Schubertian and is highly regarded as both a soloist and chamber musician. A regular performer at Wigmore Hall, this recital follows her recital of Schubert’s Impromptus with the addition of two arrangements of Bach, by Kempff and Busoni, and Beethoven’s Bagatelles. The Daily Telegraph remarked, when reviewing her noble artistry: “Go, listen, and wonder how many better pianists there are alive in this country, or anywhere”.

For more than 50 years, he has been immersed in the sound world of Johann Sebastian Bach, and even his own name carries an almost magical resonance: Philippe Herreweghe, the Belgian conductor whose music of every era sounds so incredibly clear and elegant. Accordingly, there was considerable excitement when, a few years ago, he declared that he was now "a bit tired of Bach." All the more valuable, then, are the programs that allow one to encounter Philippe Herreweghe and Bach together – as here, with the B minor Suite featuring the popular "Badinerie" and the soprano solo cantata "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut" (My Heart Swims in Blood), featuring the renowned Dorothee Mields, known for her slender and beautiful soprano. For Philippe Herreweghe, one thing was always clear: he absolutely did not want to be reduced to being a Baroque conductor. That, he says, would be "like an actor only declaiming Shakespeare or Molière. The more I do Bruckner, the better I understand Bach, and vice versa." "That's a good interplay." Not Bruckner, but Franz Schubert is now on his "Baroque+" program, specifically the so-called "unfinished" symphony. Here, too, he will rely entirely on the virtues of clarity and the meticulous attention to detail that make his interpretations so profound. "Others," says Herreweghe, "defend their interpretative freedom, but that's just false routine. I defend the score."

The unspecified occasion may have been a wedding as the chorale upon which it is based was a well-known wedding song in the city. The result is a work in which Bach challenges his singers and instrumentalists: the opening fantasia is followed unusually by no less than four arias (and no recitatives) for the quartet of vocal soloists with impressive solos for flute and oboe d’amore.

The organ matinee concert series – featuring some of Sweden’s leading organists, and occasionally, as in this case, international guests – has grown into a much-loved tradition. The organ at Konserthuset Stockholm, with its magnificent façade, is one of the most famous in Europe – and with 6,100 pipes, also one of the largest.

The Philharmonia’s Principal Viola Scott Dickinson and friends play one of the masterpieces of the Baroque era.  

The story goes that an insomniac Russian ambassador asked Bach to compose some ‘smooth and somewhat lively’ keyboard music, for his favourite musician, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to play to him to cheer his sleepless nights. Scholars debate how much of this is true, but there is no doubt that Bach’s aria and 30 variations are one of the musical pinnacles of the Baroque era.
