For the young Benjamin Britten, a holiday in Prestatyn was the key to a new world of musical wit and invention. That’s the starting point for this colourful guided tour through the wild, wonderful (and often astonishing) universe of 20th century British piano music: masterpieces and miniatures by Britten, Warlock, Moeran and Tippett, all brought sparkling to life by virtuoso pianist and RWCMD artist-in-association Llŷr Williams.

This year the concert kicks off with a specially-commissioned Fanfare by Composer-in-Residence, Owain Park and Vaughan Williams’ beautiful ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ with additional readings from the Christmas story. Audience carols including ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ and choral classics such as Holst’s ‘On Christmas Day’, Rutter’s ‘What Sweeter Music’ as well as our arrangement of ‘O Holy Night’ also feature. The concert also includes the winning piece from this year’s LCS Carol Competition.

Carmina Burana opens and closes with the crashing opening chords of the familiar O Fortuna. Between these bookends are 5 major sections, 25 movements and a performance sure to strike awe and impress all. The cantata, composed in the 1930s and based on the medieval poetry collection of the same name, is brought to the stage in fitting grandeur by the full force of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Pete Harrison and joined by over 120 members of the BSO Voices choir singing in monumental harmony, the power of this performance promises to make this an unforgettable experience.

Celebrating Our Artists conducted by Maestro Andrew Sewell highlights SLO Symphony musicians as soloists, including Concertmaster Emily Lanzone, Principal Second Violin Timothy Shanks, Principal Oboe and English Horn Jessica Hoffman, Oboe Heidi Butterfield Yi, and Flute Carol Houchens. The program also includes SLO Youth Symphony Concert Strings performing side-by-side with their SLO Symphony counterparts. 'Where other children would have nursery rhymes, I’d go to bed to the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert,' recalls Sir Simon Keenlyside, whose father and grandfather were both professional violinists. Those priceless formative years continued when he became a boy chorister, then a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, and set rock-solid foundations for his subsequent career as a wonderfully perceptive concert singer, one of the most exciting operatic performers of modern times.

Four-time Oscar-nominated film composer Danny Elfman needs little introduction. If you’ve seen such films as “Men in Black,” “Edward Scissorhands” or “Good Will Hunting,” you’re familiar with his music. Premiered in 2023, the Suite for Chamber Orchestra reflects Elfman’s taste for fast-paced, dance-like rhythms, propelling melodies that spin in all sorts of directions. Guest conductor Matthew Kasper leads “Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock. Composed in 1926, the suite is a vibrant, modern reimagining of 16th century French dance melodies as well as the British composer’s most popular work. Winner of the 2022 Sphinx Competition, double bassist Kebra-Seyoun Charles composed the technically demanding concerto Nightlife. Premiered in October 2025 by the American Composers Orchestra in New York’s Carnegie Hall, its movements, with titles such as “in the streets” and “in the club,” explore popular dance through the lens of classical music.
