This year the concert kicks off with a specially-commissioned Fanfare by Composer-in-Residence, Owain Park and Vaughan Williams’ beautiful ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ with additional readings from the Christmas story. Audience carols including ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ and choral classics such as Holst’s ‘On Christmas Day’, Rutter’s ‘What Sweeter Music’ as well as our arrangement of ‘O Holy Night’ also feature. The concert also includes the winning piece from this year’s LCS Carol Competition.

The delicacy and fragility of Warlock’s popular Capriol Suite will entrance audiences. Carol of the Bells, We Three Kings alongside Eric Whitacre’s heavenly Glow, a Disney festive song will seduce you. Bask in the tranquillity of Higgins's arrangement of Still, Still Still with a modern twist and fresh harmonies. O Come all ye Faithful and Silent Night close out this Christmas cracker!

If you close your eyes, you’ll be able to picture the rolling English countryside – here, the sound of Mercury’s gorgeous strings will truly shine in a concert that features English greats: like Edward Elgar, whose Elegy contains some of his most beautiful music – an extraordinary and deeply moving piece written when he was wracked with grief after the loss of a close friend. Carmina Burana opens and closes with the crashing opening chords of the familiar O Fortuna. Between these bookends are 5 major sections, 25 movements and a performance sure to strike awe and impress all. The cantata, composed in the 1930s and based on the medieval poetry collection of the same name, is brought to the stage in fitting grandeur by the full force of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Pete Harrison and joined by over 120 members of the BSO Voices choir singing in monumental harmony, the power of this performance promises to make this an unforgettable experience.

The program also includes SLO Youth Symphony Concert Strings performing side-by-side with their SLO Symphony counterparts.
