The Hollywood-themed first half begins with Bernard Herrmann’s iconic music for the film Psycho. Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his Masterworks debut with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” written to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, when Martin Luther established the Protestant Reformation. It includes the famous Dresden Amen. A noted arranger, Hersh introduces the first performance of his own orchestration of Clara Schumann’s piano collection “4 Pièces caractéristiques.”

This symphony, especially known for its slow second movement composed in anticipation of Richard Wagner's death, showcases Bruckner's deep admiration for Wagner through its harmonic colouring and the use of Wagner tubas.

Since its formation by Claudio Abbado in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has seen musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) form its core. This summer, around 20 MCO musicians will participate in four orchestra concerts, continuing the tradition of excellence. The collaboration between Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the MCO, including a highly acclaimed recording of W.A. Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, highlights the deep musical connection and shared history on the Lucerne Festival stage.

Aspen alum Zlatomir Fung is the youngest cellist to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Only 25, he’ll be joined by 23 year-old Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, who stepped in last-minute to wow the Aspen audience in a recital in 2023. Hear these two rising stars in Clara Schumann’s dreamlike Nocturne, composed when she was only 15. Two solo performances follow, with Yun playing the one-movement Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata of Litszt, inspired by a Victor Hugo poem. Fung will be showcased in Britten’s first solo cello suite, which hearkens back to the techniques and textures employed in Bach’s cello suites. Following intermission, the two reunite for Rachmaninoff’s last chamber work, his gorgeous and deeply moving cello sonata.

Come celebrate Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday as we perform one of the most important romantic composers of all time. Bruckner’s heroic 4th symphony premiered 150 years ago and has since become his most famous. Also joining us is the 2024 Gilmore Young Artist winner, Kasey Shao, presented in collaboration with the Gilmore Piano Festival, to perform Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto. The program will open with an overture by composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

In this program curated by SPCO musicians Steven Copes and James Ferree, piano works by Robert and Clara Schumann and Sergei Prokofiev receive surprising new arrangements by Ferree and former Artistic Partner and composer Stephen Prutsman. Likewise, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Elegy and Polka” are excerpted arrangements from his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and ballet The Golden Age. SPCO Concertmaster Steven Copes concludes by leading the orchestra in Franz Joseph Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 94, nicknamed the Surprise … no spoilers, please!

Soprano Golda Schultz is among the world’s most celebrated opera singers. For her International Artist Series debut, she will collaborate with her regular pianist partner Jonathan Ware in this revelatory collection of songs exploring several overlooked worlds of women composers, from the height of the Romantic Era to the present day. The program has been called “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief – all from a distinctly female perspective – in songs by Nadia Boulanger, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke and Clara Schumann, and a new three-song cycle called “This Be Her Verse” by Kathleen Tagg and Lila Palmer.

Equally at home in leading operatic roles as she is as a soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras and in the most venerated recital halls, she has quickly become a leading voice in a new generation of star singers. For her Princeton University Concerts debut, she brings the extraordinary warmth of her voice to a program hailed as “a love-letter to women in music” exploring themes of love, nature, folklore and belief from a distinctly female perspective. Discussing the program’s curation, she shares: “Emilie Mayer, whose music was never recorded, was a genius on the level with Beethoven, but she was forgotten the day after she died in 1883. Nadia Boulanger became one of the greatest pedagogues with a touch that defined American culture. Even when we forget these women, what they’ve done still remains.”

Praised for her “artistic, clear and enlightened” performances (BBC Magazine) that showcase “refined virtuosity and underlying passion” (Ritmo Magazine), Bulgarian pianist Anna Petrova embraces a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, and artistic director. She has been the recipient of top honors and awards at international piano competition, including the Queen Elisabeth and Jose Roca Competitions, leading her to perform in renowned venues such as Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. An avid chamber musician, Petrova is a member of two award-winning ensembles: the Carr-Petrova Duo, and Iris Trio. Alongside her performing career, she shares her passion for music education as the Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Louisville.

Gerschen Cohen Violin Recital: Max Tan

In its annual PCMS concert, the “genuinely exciting” (New York Times) Aizuri Quartet presents a program that explores the idea of community in a multi-faceted way. Isabel Valasek is a soprano based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is studying under Sari Gruber at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance, a certification in Music Education and a minor in Drama. This year in Carnegie Mellon Opera, Isabel performed as Lucy in “The Telephone” by Menotti and will also be in scenes such as singing Adele in “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II, Lucy in "The Three Penny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Idamante in “Idomeneo” by Mozart. She was previously a soloist in Carnegie Mellon University’s fully staged production of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson and was a cover for Despina in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.

Clara Schumann, wife of Robert, dear friend of Brahms, duo partner of violinist Joseph Joachim and champion of Mendelssohn and Chopin. Her influence was significant as a performer, teacher and composer and during her long career she changed the format and repertoire of the piano recital by lessening the importance of purely virtuosic works. In an era where women did not have careers, her unbelievable perseverance as both a composer and a devoted wife and a mother to eight children, made her an extraordinary role model for her time.

The esteemed orchestra from England returns to The Soraya and brings pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, a fresh voice in classical music who gained fame in the recent post-pandemic months. Championing the works of female composers, she performs Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a work that also appears on Kanneh-Mason’s 2019 debut recording. Schumann debuted the concerto in 1835 shortly after her 16th birthday. RPO also performs Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, Pathétique, which debuted in 1893 just nine days before the composer’s death. While the official cause of Tchaikovsky’s demise was cholera, history hands down a counter-narrative that is widely upheld—that his final composition is actually a musical suicide note. Regardless, the piece’s emotional qualities are undeniable.

Russian maestro Vasily Petrenko became the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Music Director in the 2021-22 season, after leaving his role as Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He will conclude his term as Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) in July 2021, closing a fifteen-year period during which he has drawn critical acclaim, global recognition and significantly increased audiences across the region.
