The last chamber music concert of 2025 will be full of folk rhythms, especially at the very end, thanks to Nikolai Kapustin’s lively Trio, Op. 86, which includes a jazzy flute part. The concert will also include works by Clara and Robert Schumann, to whom the entire 32nd season of the Chamber Music Series is dedicated.

Clara Schumann was a formidable character – a phenomenally gifted pianist, brilliant composer, editor of her husband Robert Schumann’s compositions and key supporter of Brahms, her contribution to the world of music is vast. The first half of this concert celebrates Clara herself, first in Gabriela Ortiz’s Clara, a musical telling of the story of her relationship with Robert, and then in her own Piano Concerto, a dancing, dazzling tour-de-force. The second half of the programme features two composers important to Clara, both writing with a distinctly sun-kissed, Italian flavour.

Stylistically, the four pieces in this program display enormous differences, which is what makes the sequence of works so appealing. Nevertheless, there is also a common thread. What the compositions have in common is that their creators each thought outside the box and found inspiration therein. Clara Schumann was a famous piano virtuoso and then the wife of a very gifted composer; she adopted many a gesture and tone from him - her Romances of 1853 bear witness to this. Richard Strauss, on the other hand, was on the verge of making a significant name for himself as a composer of expansive tone poems for orchestra with huge scores. When he completed his violin sonata in 1887, the ecstasy evoked by Don Juan in the symphonic poem of the same name was already haunting his mind—this, too, is unmistakable. Karol Szymanowski, on the other hand, was deeply inspired by the play of colors of Impressionism, particularly by the music of Claude Debussy, as the three "Myths" from 1915 bear eloquent witness. Maurice Ravel was also among the Impressionists; in his violin sonata, completed in 1937, however, he turned in a completely different direction—toward America and the blues. No creative mind works on its own; everyone needs inspiration, even if it comes from foreign gardens.

Robert Schumann's Fourth Symphony is simply the kind of music that makes you happy in your soul. It also makes you happy in your soul to see otherwise unknown composers receive the honor and dignity they deserve. This applies not least to female composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Wieck Schumann, who have otherwise stood in the shadow of their more famous (or just more male) family members. It is the composer Juliana Hodkinson who has arranged works by the two women for the large orchestra.

Clara – No One Silences Me Now! is a brand-new production aimed at schoolchildren in the middle years (ages 10–12). The Clara in question is the renowned pianist and composer Clara Schumann. She lived and worked in the 19th century, but now she travels through time to the present day on a mysterious mission. Clara finds herself at a concert in Konserthuset, with Ayla Kabaca as presenter. Before returning to the 1800s, Clara is determined to hear music by both her friends and herself.

In this sweeping program centered on the beauty of the natural world, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen lends his “ravishing, otherworldly” (Opera News) voice to an exciting collection of familiar and fresh songs. Nussbaum Cohen enjoys venturing beyond the usual countertenor repertoire, and has carved out a unique path by being the only artist of his voice type to record lieder in the Austro-Germanic tradition by Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture is a jubilant celebration of popular song, including the universally recognized “Gaudeamus igitur.” Angela Cheng, Oberlin Conservatory Professor of Piano, then takes center stage for Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a rarely heard work of deep lyricism and virtuosic brilliance. The evening reaches its peak with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Titan, a sweeping and emotionally charged masterpiece that showcases the full power of the orchestra. After performing Mahler’s Third and Second Symphonies in recent years to great acclaim, the Akron Symphony Orchestra is excited to kick off its 72nd season with Mahler’s debut symphony.

Our tribute to Robert and Clara Schumann culminates in a concert featuring works by both spouses. Clara Wieck-Schumann was a pioneering pianist—one of the first to perform from memory—and a gifted composer, balancing her artistry with raising eight children. Robert, an accomplished composer, writer, and pianist, damaged his hands through obsessive technical practice.

From the opening notes of Clara’s Piano Concerto, the deep connection between them is unmistakable—a bond unmatched in the 19th century. Robert’s Cello Concerto, no less moving and contemplative, seems to call out Clara’s name in the final movement’s intervals, according to cellist Mischa Maisky. This music unfolds like a personal film, with the cello’s lyrical voice and the orchestra’s rich palette painting vivid scenes.

What would the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival be without "its" castles and manor houses, which the team explores and performs in throughout the country? For its 20th anniversary, the festival launched the "Sleeping Beauties" series to highlight historical monuments that were in decline and urgently needed to be saved. The series was held for a second time in 2020, and now, for its 35th anniversary, we're picking up the thread again.

Clara Schumann was one of 19th-century Europe’s foremost pianists. In addition to raising many children and being the wife of renowned composer Robert Schumann, who demanded silence at home while he was at work, Clara maintained a grueling touring schedule—yet still found time to compose. Salons were an essential part of Leipzig’s cultural life, fostering exchanges of ideas and friendships. Two women composers featured on this program were part of Clara’s circle: Josephine Lang, for whom Clara organized a benefit concert, and Swedish composer and violinist Amanda Maier, whom Clara befriended in her later years. According to Amanda Maier’s great-granddaughter, Saskia Thiadens (who lives in Napa!), a treasure trove of Amanda’s forgotten scores were discovered in a family member’s attic. Although Maier’s music is rarely heard today, we are thrilled to share her brilliance alongside works by the Schumanns, Josephine Lang, and Johannes Brahms.

In 2023, Raphaela Gromes released a CD with only works by female composers: Femmes . Now, together with pianist Julian Riem, she is adding the male side. Beethoven's variations on Mozart's Bei Männer, Welche Liebe Gefühl , testify to the attraction between the poles. The cello sonata by Marie Helene Liebmann, born in Berlin in 1795, is also about love: the emotional piece was written around the time of her marriage, and the final movement is a variation of the great seduction duet by Mozart's womanizer Don Giovanni with Zerlina: La ci darem la mano . The combination of Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms in the second part of the program speaks for itself - even though Clara dedicated her three romances to the violinist Joseph Joachim and even though Brahms' passionately mournful second cello sonata deals with the rejection by the alto Helene Spieß. Two outstanding young musicians give an atmospheric duo recital in the idyllically located Palais im Großen Garten: only last season, the Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias, born in 2001, won over the festival audience with his piano recital in the same location. Now, he returns with a violin partner, one of the most high-profile violinists of his generation. The American violinist Chad Hoopes, born in 1994, has made a name for himself worldwide with his outstanding talent and brilliant tone. The two young virtuosi have put together a resounding program inspired by the theme of love, in keeping with the Festival’s motto. Fiery finger acrobatics and an enchanting sound blend to create a concert leaving nothing to be desired.

Some talents burn out early: they are celebrated as long as great art is paired with early youth, after which they are forgotten. This does not apply to the three composers of this evening - with one exception: Clara Schumann was celebrated as a virtuoso during her lifetime, but she did not receive lasting recognition for her compositions until the 20th century. One critic even rejected the review of her 1837 piano concerto "because we are dealing with the work of a lady". Schumann took Mendelssohn's first trio of 1839 as an opportunity to praise his fellow composer as the "Mozart of the 19th century". Clara Schumann wrote her only piano trio in 1845 at the age of 25 - a year before her husband Robert composed his first trio, which was heavily influenced by her work. Lera Auerbach, born in Siberia in 1973 and now living in New York, writes music using what initially seem like traditional means and forms. Her powerful first trio from 1992 gives no indication that we are dealing with the work of a woman.

Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cutting­edge performances. WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making.” The group’s 2019 album Her Voice, on Chandos Records, was named one of the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3. The Boston Musical Intelligencer reports, “it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.”

Mutter is also dedicated to the future of music, having premiered 31 new works and supporting young musicians through her foundation, Mutter’s Virtuosi. In this concert, you can experience some of them, with their rich music and their creative work. You may still know Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger and Rebecca Clark, but it is a different story with Isabella Leonarda, an Italian nun from the 17th century who was one of the most productive composers of her era, or Marie Jaëll, a French pianist and composer from the 19th century. The Frenchwoman Mélanie Bonis, whose works were mostly published in the 19th century under the pseudonym Mel Bonis, is also hardly known in this country, as is the Austrian pianist, singer and composer Maria Theresia von Paradis, who was blind since childhood and was also very prominent in the musical life of her time, the Viennese Classical period. In this concert you can get to know them all, as well as Emilie Mayer, a German composer of the 19th century who was also highly celebrated during her lifetime and was widely regarded as the "female Beethoven".

Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann preceded Amy Beach, paving the way for the tonal worlds of the 20th Century Romantics (like Rachmaninoff and Beach). Sergei Rachmaninoff and Amy Beach were contemporaries, and I find that their music pairs together well. Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists. Winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize, Denk was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denk returns frequently to Carnegie Hall and in recent seasons has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as on tour with Academy St. Martin in the Fields, and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.
