The acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble is thrilled to co-present a program of chamber music featuring world premieres by 2023 MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient and Rome Prize winner Courtney Bryan, commissioned by Arlene and Larry Dunn, and Grammy nominee and decorated longtime member of the famed Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians Adegoke Steve Colson, commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation.

Still’s Symphony No. 2, Song of a New Race, celebrates the Black American as, in the composer’s words, “a totally new individual.” Adolphus Hailstork’s oratorio Done Made My Vow, A Ceremony, conceived here for the stage by director Tazewell Thompson and video artist Rasean Davonté Johnson, honors the countless Black Americans who have faced “the bench of injustice, and, by doing so, changed a nation.” A World Premiere by Courtney Bryan, with a new libretto by Thompson, celebrates a variety of Black musical heritage. Leslie B. Dunner conducts.

“A pianist and composer of panoramic interests” (The New York Times), Courtney Bryan is a pianist, organist, and composer whose music is in conversation with jazz, experimental music, gospel, spirituals, and hymns. Mexican-born composer and violinist Erika Vega is currently studying the connection between the elements of poetry and those of music. Katherine Balch captures the magic of everyday sounds, becoming in the process a veritable “musical Thomas Edison – you can just hear her tinkering around in her workshop, putting together new sounds and textural ideas” (San Francisco Chronicle). All the women have numerous awards and each presents a world premiere on this fascinating program.

Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program introduces students to the orchestra by helping them to become a part of it. Through this highly participatory program, students learn to sing and play an instrument in the classroom and perform with a professional orchestra from their seats at a culminating concert.
