Respighi borrowed heavily from his Italian compatriot, Gioachino Rossini, to create a ballet for the Ballets Russes about dolls who come to life in The Fantastic Toy Shop. The ballet suite includes traditional dances all to be performed by the “marionettes.” Although Berlioz was French, he adored the Italian countryside and wrote Harold in Italy as a musical reflection of his own sojourns to Abruzzi, with his Harold—represented by the solo viola—on a romantic pilgrimage searching for the meaning of life. Join us as we say “Ciao Italia!”

Ciao Italia

The natural world is filled with music. Louis Gottschalk set out to capture the sounds of the tropics at night and their Latin rhythms by day in his only symphony, A Night in the Tropics. Grofé heard a very different sonic landscape as he composed a musical journey through the Grand Canyon in his iconic Grand Canyon Suite. Most recently, Lori Laitman imagines the journey of life through melodic roots and branches in her Becoming a Redwood. Travel with us to these very special destinations in our “Back to Nature” concert.

Back to Nature

Anyone who has seen the film, Fantasia, will conjure up their own special ballet images as they listen to Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours from his opera, La Gioconda. That fanciful world comes of age in the romantic heroism of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and then matures in the lyricism of Schumann’s Symphony in C Major, with its emotional journey from darkness to affirmation and triumph. Spend time with the orchestra and our young artist as together we enjoy our “Classical Hours.”

Classical Hours

What could be more American than Gershwin’s An American in Paris, a jazz-inspired tour of the French capital through the eyes of an American tourist? How about William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony, an overlooked American gem infused with the blues, spirituals and the sounds of the jazz age all blended together in a traditional classical form.  Add in the swing, funk and bebop styles reflected in Daron Hagen’s Concerto for Flugelhorn, and you have the perfect soundscape for our “Americana” concert.

We are excited to announce new dates for our postponed winter concerts! Our season finale will now be Late Spring Masterworks, featuring French romantic music at its finest, with lush melodies and rich orchestration crafted to charm and delight. 

Late Springs Masterworks: ROMANCE

Mystical legends told in music of boundless beauty. The Swan of Tuonela and Swan Lake speak to spiritual rebirth with enchanting, sweeping soundscapes. These performances are dedicated to the memory of Brian Lloyd, our friend and fellow musician.
