What starts as Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries explodes into a madcap operatic mashup. BLO kicks things off with that thunderous prelude—then gleefully romps through showstopping arias, unexpected twists, and musical spectacle. With powerhouse performers Lise Lindström and Morris Robinson at the helm, and David Angus leading members of the BLO Orchestra, this is a concert with no brakes and all bravado.

In a vivid retelling of the Orpheus myth from his bride’s perspective, composer Matthew Aucoin and librettist Sarah Ruhl’s stunning opera Eurydice follows the titular character as she travels to the underworld on her wedding day. Boston Lyric Opera, together with Opera Grand Rapids, has co-commissioned a new,  intimate orchestral arrangement from Aucoin, acclaimed composer and MacArthur Fellow, and Ruhl, Tony and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright. This compelling new production, conducted by the composer and directed by Doug Fitch, delves into the profound bonds of family and love – between parents and children, between husband and wife. Eurydice is a resonant story of love’s beauty and brutality – and the power of music to find us in the dark.

Amid Puccini’s lush and sweeping score, Madama Butterfly unfolds in 1940s America under the shadow of World War II. In a brand-new production from Boston Lyric Opera, wander through the nightlife of San Francisco on the eve of Pearl Harbor through the story of Butterfly, a nightclub performer contributing to the war effort, and Pinkerton, a young soldier, on the eve of his deployment. A culmination of BLO’s three-year exploration of authentic storytelling through The Butterfly Process, this production examines the experience of Japanese Americans during a critical moment in U.S. history.
