For this concert to benefit Ukraine, we are collaborating with six outstanding musicians on a program created by Solomiya Ivakhiv, violinist and artistic director of the Music at the Institute Concert Series at the Ukrainian Institute of America. Titled Ukraine in the Eyes of Others, this event features Bruce Adolphe’s 2016 work highlighting Krushelnytska, a Ukrainian-born singer who saved Puccini’s Madame Butterfly; Philip Maneval’s latest string quartet (Siege of Mariupol) composed in response to the brutal, unprovoked invasion by Russia and the immense suffering of the Ukrainian people; and the first of Beethoven’s Op. 59 Quartets dedicated to Count Razumovsky, who was Ukrainian royalty and thus inspired Beethoven to use Ukrainian (not Russian) folk tunes in two of his Op. 59 works.
