»Illusion« and »Passion« are two basic prerequisites for the creation of music-historical milestones. Introduced by Erkki-Sven Tüür’s movements of the same name, which make excellent use of the string orchestra’s infinite textural potential, the musical arc stretches from Suite No. 3 from Respighi’s »Danze ed Arie antiche« – a combination of historical elements with the colorful splendor of the 20th century – to Haydn’s Symphony in F sharp minor.

Paul Hindemith’s Symphonie Mathis der Maler is a riveting musical portrait of the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, who ultimately abandoned his art to devote himself to his people’s political and military struggle for freedom. Ottorino Respighi’s brilliantly crafted four-movement tone poem, The Pines of Rome, paints a vivid musical picture of four settings around the perimeter of the Eternal City: the gardens of the Villa Borghese, the ancient Catacombs, the Janiculum hill, and the grandiose Appian Way.

Landscape paintings with a pianist. Framed by shimmering postcard images from Italy and Croatia, the still astonishingly youthful Alexander Malofeev will present one of the most popular and brilliant piano concertos of the Romantic era, whose legendary opening chords are known to everyone. In 2022, Malofeev stepped in for his ailing colleague Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff's formidably difficult Piano Concerto No. 3; he was just 20 years old at the time. Now he returns with Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, another work for the consummate virtuoso soloist – though Malofeev avoids every cliché at the piano, always prioritizing refinement over pathos. With meticulous brushstrokes, he paints the landscapes that Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić has grouped around the Tchaikovsky lighthouse. These are the vivid depictions of Roman nature and folklore by Respighi and Tchaikovsky, as well as those "Sunny Fields" to which the Croatian composer Blagoje Bersa dedicated a brilliant, sonorous symphonic poem in 1917.

A double helping of Respighi awaits you with music by this orchestrator extraordinaire. In The Fountains of Rome, he focuses on four magnificent aquatic landmarks “contemplated at the hour… in which their beauty appears most impressive to the observer.” Fish and fowl and mythological beings of all kinds are suggested — nymphs, naiads, sea horses, Neptune — with the score suitably splashy and noisy. In the final movement of Church Windows, “Pope Gregory the Great” Respighi pays homage to this powerful figure in the history of church music (i.e. Gregorian chant) and pulls out all the stops, including organ and bells. The Fifth Piano Concerto, inspired by the composer’s journey to Cairo, is a nice mix of “pseudo-Egyptian” exoticism (hence the nickname) and Saint-Saëns’ trademark flashiness. You’ll also enjoy the DSO premiere of the evocatively named What do flowers do at night? by Composer-in-Residence Sophia Jani.

Colourful, festive, refined – Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Organ Symphony” surprises us not only with its unexpected use of the organ, but also with its delicate sound textures. Kazuki Yamada, chief conductor of the orchestras in Birmingham and Monte-Carlo, conducts the work in his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker; the organ part is played by Sebastian Heindl.The symphany will be preceded by two different kinds of water music: Ottorino Respighi’s gaudy, shimmering tone poem Fontane di Roma and Tōru Takemitsu’s mystical I Hear the Water Dreaming, featuring our solo flautist Emmanuel Pahud.

The sensational Weimar premiere of Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 was a long time in the making. Begun during Liszt's virtuoso period and only completed when he had already made a name for himself as a composer of symphonic poems, both are noticeable in the music: the youthful spirit of the piano virtuoso and a sophisticated symphonic orchestral part. The Italian-Croatian pianist Martina Filjak also brings a southern flair, as does the Italian conductor Fabrizio Carminati.

**Anne-Sophie Mutter** is a four-time Grammy Award-winning violinist who has been a prominent figure in the classical music world for 48 years. Known for her impeccable technique, emotional depth, and fiery temperament, she has performed in all the major concert halls around the globe. Mutter is also dedicated to the future of music, having premiered 31 new works and supporting young musicians through her foundation, Mutter’s Virtuosi. She is equally committed to social causes, often performing benefit concerts to support various initiatives.

**Lambert Orkis** has been Mutter's accompanist for 36 years, and together they have created a harmonious and synchronized musical partnership. Their collaboration brings out the best in each piece they perform, making their concerts a unique and enriching experience.

CYS returns to Hertz Hall at UC Berkeley on March 30th with the Senior Orchestra performing a stellar program that features the US premiere orchestral performance of Ukrainian composer Sergei Golovko’s Colombian Marimba Concerto. We are thrilled and honored to present this magnificent work, which will be performed by CYS’s own Apple Gao, winner of the Young Artist Competition for the 2024-25 CYS Season. The Colombian Concerto takes us on a Latin American voyage complete with drum set, electric guitar, jazz piano, as well as the supremely virtuosic solo marimba as they make use of Latin American dances, rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. It is a work that is guaranteed to please everyone!

Flute virtuoso and Latin Grammy-nominated artist Giovanni Perez will join the PVSO in performing his brand-new flute concerto. Long admired for his improvisations and melodic gift, the orchestra is excited to be part of the creation of Perez's first-ever flute concerto!  One of the most well-known tone poems depicting the bustling landscapes of Rome, Respighi's colorful orchestration promises a real treat together with Nigerian-American composer Fela Sowande’s Folk Symphony, written for the independence of Nigeria, and inspired by the rich musical heritage of the country.

Violinist David Southorn is the NHSO’s “concertmaster” (principal violinist) and for this program he also serves as artistic director. He will play the solo violin lines and conduct the ensemble from his position in the violin section.

David’s recent solo highlights include performances of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Fremont Symphony, Aaron Jay Kernis’ AIR with the New Haven Symphony and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Delaware Symphony where he was lauded by Delaware Arts Info as “nothing less than brilliant … powerful sound; immaculate precision and compelling agility… impeccable phrasing and polished lyricism…a zestful performance.” As a chamber musician he has performed with his award-winning Amphion String Quartet at Alice Tully Hall as members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS II. The 21-22 season is his 4th year as the Concertmaster of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. This season marks his 10th year as Concertmaster of the Delaware Symphony and he continues his tenure as Assistant Concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. This Fall he joins Mannes College The New School for Music as part-time Faculty.

Her repertoire spans from Bach to Adams, combining vigor and suppleness with natural eloquence and elegance.

There are only ten years between the main works of this concert. And yet Ottorino Respighi and Igor Stravinsky are worlds apart. The orchestral suite "Trittico botticelliano" is inspired by paintings by the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Respighi uses impressionistic colors to bring the picturesque scenes to life. With its gentle elegance, the suite is one of Respighi's most poetic works. Stravinsky's concerto "Dumbarton Oaks" is influenced by Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. In three movements, it combines clear structure and contrapuntal density with rhythmic energy and is considered one of the most concise chamber orchestra works from Stravinsky's pen.
