Under the inspired direction of Diego Ceretta, principal conductor of the ORT-Orchestra of Florence, the Orchestre National Montpellier transports you from ancient tragedy to the splendors of Rome, from Viennese salons to the pictorial visions of Mussorgsky. The evening opens with the poignant Cede pietati, dolor by Silvia Colasanti, an immersion with expressive textures in the tragic world of Medea. Then Respighi unfolds his Fontane di Roma , a true pictorial symphony where the water games of the Roman fountains gush through the orchestra and where each sound tableau is a celebration of light and movement. After the intermission, Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales evoke the elegance of the 19th century in the refined language of the early modernity of the 20th century . Finally, here are Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition . Orchestrated by Ravel, this masterpiece is a veritable sound museum where each piece brilliantly depicts an imaginary canvas.

Paul Hindemith’s Symphonie Mathis der Maler is a riveting musical portrait of the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, who ultimately abandoned his art to devote himself to his people’s political and military struggle for freedom. Ottorino Respighi’s brilliantly crafted four-movement tone poem, The Pines of Rome, paints a vivid musical picture of four settings around the perimeter of the Eternal City: the gardens of the Villa Borghese, the ancient Catacombs, the Janiculum hill, and the grandiose Appian Way.

Landscape paintings with a pianist. Framed by shimmering postcard images from Italy and Croatia, the still astonishingly youthful Alexander Malofeev will present one of the most popular and brilliant piano concertos of the Romantic era, whose legendary opening chords are known to everyone. In 2022, Malofeev stepped in for his ailing colleague Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff's formidably difficult Piano Concerto No. 3; he was just 20 years old at the time. Now he returns with Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, another work for the consummate virtuoso soloist – though Malofeev avoids every cliché at the piano, always prioritizing refinement over pathos. With meticulous brushstrokes, he paints the landscapes that Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić has grouped around the Tchaikovsky lighthouse. These are the vivid depictions of Roman nature and folklore by Respighi and Tchaikovsky, as well as those "Sunny Fields" to which the Croatian composer Blagoje Bersa dedicated a brilliant, sonorous symphonic poem in 1917.

Travel through time with a concert that bridges the elegance of the Renaissance and the brilliance of the Classical and Romantic eras. Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 3, breathes new life into centuries-old melodies, setting the stage for Haydn’s delightful Sinfonia Concertante, where four of the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra’s principal musicians shine in a sparkling display of virtuosity. The introspective beauty of Dowland’s Lachrimae Antiquae offers a moment of reflection before Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, "Reformation" brings the evening to a triumphant close—an awe-inspiring tribute to history, faith, and musical grandeur.

A double helping of Respighi awaits you with music by this orchestrator extraordinaire. In The Fountains of Rome, he focuses on four magnificent aquatic landmarks “contemplated at the hour… in which their beauty appears most impressive to the observer.” Fish and fowl and mythological beings of all kinds are suggested — nymphs, naiads, sea horses, Neptune — with the score suitably splashy and noisy. In the final movement of Church Windows, “Pope Gregory the Great” Respighi pays homage to this powerful figure in the history of church music (i.e. Gregorian chant) and pulls out all the stops, including organ and bells. The Fifth Piano Concerto, inspired by the composer’s journey to Cairo, is a nice mix of “pseudo-Egyptian” exoticism (hence the nickname) and Saint-Saëns’ trademark flashiness. You’ll also enjoy the DSO premiere of the evocatively named What do flowers do at night? by Composer-in-Residence Sophia Jani.

Colourful, festive, refined – Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Organ Symphony” surprises us not only with its unexpected use of the organ, but also with its delicate sound textures. Kazuki Yamada, chief conductor of the orchestras in Birmingham and Monte-Carlo, conducts the work in his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker; the organ part is played by Sebastian Heindl.The symphany will be preceded by two different kinds of water music: Ottorino Respighi’s gaudy, shimmering tone poem Fontane di Roma and Tōru Takemitsu’s mystical I Hear the Water Dreaming, featuring our solo flautist Emmanuel Pahud.

The sensational Weimar premiere of Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 was a long time in the making. Begun during Liszt's virtuoso period and only completed when he had already made a name for himself as a composer of symphonic poems, both are noticeable in the music: the youthful spirit of the piano virtuoso and a sophisticated symphonic orchestral part. The Italian-Croatian pianist Martina Filjak also brings a southern flair, as does the Italian conductor Fabrizio Carminati.

The musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra put the pedal to the floor in two bedazzling showpieces by Respighi. The Italian conductor Jader Bignamini makes his ASO debut after presenting these works at the Kennedy Center, driving the audience to their feet for multiple curtain calls. The ASO welcomes the Italian violin sensation Giuseppe Gibboni. Winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition, the Devil-may-care young fiddler performs (what else?) the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1. CYS returns to Hertz Hall at UC Berkeley on March 30th with the Senior Orchestra performing a stellar program that features the US premiere orchestral performance of Ukrainian composer Sergei Golovko’s Colombian Marimba Concerto. We are thrilled and honored to present this magnificent work, which will be performed by CYS’s own Apple Gao, winner of the Young Artist Competition for the 2024-25 CYS Season. The Colombian Concerto takes us on a Latin American voyage complete with drum set, electric guitar, jazz piano, as well as the supremely virtuosic solo marimba as they make use of Latin American dances, rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. It is a work that is guaranteed to please everyone!

Flute virtuoso and Latin Grammy-nominated artist Giovanni Perez will join the PVSO in performing his brand-new flute concerto. Long admired for his improvisations and melodic gift, the orchestra is excited to be part of the creation of Perez's first-ever flute concerto!  One of the most well-known tone poems depicting the bustling landscapes of Rome, Respighi's colorful orchestration promises a real treat together with Nigerian-American composer Fela Sowande’s Folk Symphony, written for the independence of Nigeria, and inspired by the rich musical heritage of the country.

Violinist David Southorn is the NHSO’s “concertmaster” (principal violinist) and for this program he also serves as artistic director. He will play the solo violin lines and conduct the ensemble from his position in the violin section.

David’s recent solo highlights include performances of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Fremont Symphony, Aaron Jay Kernis’ AIR with the New Haven Symphony and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Delaware Symphony where he was lauded by Delaware Arts Info as “nothing less than brilliant … powerful sound; immaculate precision and compelling agility… impeccable phrasing and polished lyricism…a zestful performance.” As a chamber musician he has performed with his award-winning Amphion String Quartet at Alice Tully Hall as members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS II. The 21-22 season is his 4th year as the Concertmaster of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. This season marks his 10th year as Concertmaster of the Delaware Symphony and he continues his tenure as Assistant Concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. This Fall he joins Mannes College The New School for Music as part-time Faculty.

There are only ten years between the main works of this concert. And yet Ottorino Respighi and Igor Stravinsky are worlds apart. The orchestral suite "Trittico botticelliano" is inspired by paintings by the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Respighi uses impressionistic colors to bring the picturesque scenes to life. With its gentle elegance, the suite is one of Respighi's most poetic works. Stravinsky's concerto "Dumbarton Oaks" is influenced by Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. In three movements, it combines clear structure and contrapuntal density with rhythmic energy and is considered one of the most concise chamber orchestra works from Stravinsky's pen.

In his Serenade No. 6 dating from 1950, the American composer Vincent Persichetti combines two string instruments with a trombone, sometimes engaging them in an animated conversation, sometimes in a dreamy indulgence. This piece is followed by Gustav Mahler’s piano quartet, which was composed during his student days and is his only surviving work of chamber music. Apart from sketches for a scherzo only the first movement of the work has survived, which in this concert meets Alfred Schnittke’s piano quartet referring to Mahler’s quartet fragment. In this work, composed in 1988, Schnittke attempts to "remember something that did not come about (...), a sound quality that could not be thought through to the end." Mahler’s quartet sound shimmers through dimly, but is strongly alienated by clusters and polyphonic structures. The open end also gives Schnittke’s quartet the character of a fragment. The final piece is the colorful String quartet in D major by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, marked by its turn-of-the-century harmonies.

February 11, 1918 went down in music history as a milestone: the triumphant performance of the Fontane di Roma (The Fountains of Rome) under the conductor Arturo Toscanini brought the name of the composer Ottorino Respighi into the music world and at the same time proved that Italians could actually compose orchestral music. Until then, it had been an iron law that important Italian music could not exist without singing. With Respighi, there was once again a creator of orchestral works of European stature - for the first time since the Baroque period!

2nd Philharmonic Concert: Roma aeterna – Eternal Rome

Imposing choruses and colossal tableaux accompany a story about intrigues, power play and an affair between stepmother and son in Ottorino Respighi’s last grand opera. Surrounded by political struggles, the figures become entangled in personal conflicts inextricably leading towards catastrophe and the cruel ending of a burning at the stake. For LA FIAMMA, Respighi created music going far beyond his illustrative-seeming “Trilogia romana” for which he is known in concert halls today. Yet in essence, the composer remained true to his colourful tonal language – the result is a musical amalgamation of French impressionism, influences of Russian music and a classicistic reimagining of Italian renaissance music. The archaic story and expansive dimensions of the operatic epos are reminiscent of the genre of the historical epic film, which was gaining popularity at the same time the opera was composed. This meant LA FIAMMA hit the nerve of the time, ensuring international success soon after its premiere. Over the course of decades, the work was slowly forgotten, yet the renowned critic and musicologist Paolo Isotta still praised LA FIAMMA in 2015 as a unique symbiosis of historicism and modernism, claiming its place among the 20th century’s masterworks of musical drama.

Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.”

»Music is love‘s soul, for it is the touching of the divine with the human.« These were the thoughts of Bettina von Arnim – and in our concert conducted by Andrew Manze we indulge in such deep soundscapes as Respighi‘s »Concerto Gregoriano« from 1921: it conjures up a religiously solemn world of the middle ages – inspired by his preoccupation with the honorable church modes and meditative melodies of Gregorian chant, which had seized him »like an addiction« at the time. The violin concerto is therefore largely a lyrical-contemplative composition and quotes the Easter sequence »victimae paschali laudes« in the middle movement – but in the end it soars hymn-like with echoes of the famous »Salve Regina« chant like a fervent profession of faith. One critic characterised the violin part as that of »a cantor in an ancient religious ceremony, with the orchestra personifying the choir of the believers«. With us, Frank Peter Zimmermann will assume the role of solo choir leader with his Stradivarius. What follows is a journey into the Bruckner cosmos: his creative work was inseparably intertwined with religious sentiments, which earned him the nickname »Musician of God«. Before he had dared to approach symphonies, he had already made a name for himself as an eminent organist and church composer. After several dissatisfactory attempts, he composed his first definitive symphony in Linz in 1865/66 – which, however, he reworked in Vienna in 1891 on the basis of the experience he had gathered thereafter: it captivates the listener with its natural originality, grandiose themes and climax after climax – and in addition offers deep insights into Bruckner‘s state of mind in the heartfelt Adagio.
