Bring on the timpani and trumpets! The final concert of the Summer Festival begins with Mozart's "Jupiter Symphony," whose final movement impressed later composers at least as much as that of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. While Mozart's "Jupiter" shines brightly, his C minor Mass casts many shadows. This is precisely why the unfinished choral work is a secret Mozart favorite of many music lovers—powerful enough for an unforgettable finale.

Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

The Mozart operas he performed at the Festspielhaus have all been released as CDs by Deutsche Grammophon. Now, Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the master's Requiem and his most famous symphony. Mozart's mysteriously masked commissioner of the Requiem contributed greatly to its legend. The fact that the composer composed a requiem mass on his own deathbed – this fateful overlap became the goal and climax of Hollywood director Milos Forman's famous "Amadeus" film.

The Viennese aristocracy are no strangers to family feuds: boorish Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau interrupts the morning tête-à-tête between his cousin, the Marschallin, and her young lover Octavian, to ask for her help with his wedding plans, which are steered more by financial gain than love. Ochs does not suspect that Octavian himself, who is chosen to deliver the engagement rose, will eventually fall in love with the bride.

Tito exercises magnanimity: he forgives his opponents and donates the money intended for the construction of a temple in his honor to the victims of the last eruption of Vesuvius. He also releases Servilia, whom he wanted to marry for reasons of raison d'état, when her lover Annio asks him to do so. But he is not armed against the secret wrath of Vitellia, who claims him and the co-regency for herself and incites his friend Sesto to murder and riot. The Capitol is already in flames. When Sesto confesses to being the instigator of the uprising, Tito is faced with the decision of signing the Senate's death warrant or allowing the proverbial leniency to prevail.

Yannick celebrates two toweringly gifted composers, seminal American voices of the 20th century. Gershwin’s Piano Concerto dances through cityscapes, brash and brilliant. Bernstein, whose works for the concert hall, opera stage, Broadway, and film formed the soundtrack of the century, is represented by two of his Broadway masterworks, Candide and West Side Story, and his impassioned “Jeremiah” Symphony, an epic chronicle of a prophet and a people.
