Join us for an enchanting evening with "A Far Cry" at the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts, a highlight of this season's musical offerings. This exceptional performance is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 7:30 PM to 9:15 PM at the iconic Naumburg Bandshell, a New York landmark known for hosting memorable musical events.

"A Far Cry," renowned for their dynamic and collaborative approach to chamber music, will present a captivating program featuring a mix of contemporary compositions and classical masterpieces. The evening will commence with Kareem Roustom's "Dabke" (2014), followed by Kinan Azmeh's "Ibn Arabi Postlude" (2005), and Dinuk Wijeratne's "Clarinet Concerto" (2018), a piece co-commissioned by Rockport Music that promises to take the audience on a profound musical journey through its six movements: Prologue: Foretelling, The Dance of Ancestral Ties, Flux, Exile: The salt and bread of rhythm, Cadenza: Solitary Traveler, and Epilogue: Home in Motion.

After an intermission, the ensemble will delve into the past with Leoš Janáček's "Idyll" (1878), offering a sequence of movements that range from the serene to the spirited, showcasing the ensemble's versatility and expressive depth.

This performance by "A Far Cry" is made possible through the generous support of the Jerome L. Greene Foundation, continuing a tradition of excellence since the ensemble's debut in our series in July 2018.

Music from different worlds and centuries collide in Domingo Hindoyan’s debut with Ensemble 10:10. Featuring Liverpool's own William Bracken on piano, Alban Berg's 1920s masterpiece was fashioned in the intellectual cauldron of Vienna. Kareem Roustom’s Violin Concerto was inspired by a musical phrase from a Mozart concerto which invoked his own Arabic musical heritage and language, and will be played tonight by its dedicatee, Michael Barenboim. On the other hand, Sam Kane – winner of the 2023 Rushworth Composition Prize – takes his musical roots from his own Irish ancestry.

Triple-threat composer, conductor, and pianist Dinuk Wijeratne makes his ESO debut. A JUNO Award-winner who made his Carnegie Hall debut while still a student in 2004, Wijeratne has performed with everyone from Yo-Yo Ma to tabla legend Zakir Hussain. Experience a provocative program featuring Wijeratne’s Fantasy Variations for Piano and Strings, plus recent music by Kareem Roustom and Luis Ramirez.

Music Director finalist Fawzi Haimor starts the festivities with Ramal, by the talented Syrian/American Kareem Roustom. Marin Symphony Principal Flute MyungJu Yeo and Principal Harp Dan Levitan join forces in Mozart’s charming double concerto, and we end with the abundant joys of Dvořák’s final Symphony.
