The second chamber performance by the DPO String Principals Quartet is all about the journey! Beethoven’s 12th String Quartet, initially met with poor reception, has since transformed into a beacon of his profound originality and introspection. This evolution is a fascinating journey in itself. And despite being stifled by WW2-era social norms and musical stereotypes, Germaine Tailleferre was always respected by her peers. Only recently has the world come to recognize her distinct musical voice. Finally, contemporary composer/vanguard Caroline Shaw, with her ‘Plan & Elevation,’ uses musical and architectural metaphors to illustrate how “the actual journey and results are quite different than the original plan.”

Founded in Paris in 2009, Trio Karénine bears the name of Tolstoy’s beautiful and emotionally honest heroine. The French trio is acclaimed by critics and audiences for its musical integrity and passionate interpretations, and was the top prizewinner at the ARD International Competition in 2013. The group has performed in the world’s most prestigious halls, including the Philharmonie and Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Frick Collection in New York, Salle Bourgie in Montréal, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Herkulessaal and Prinzregententheater in Münich, the Leiszhalle in Hamburg, and Sydney Opera House. The trio has just completed a highly successful return tour of Australia and is currently engaged in a full summer schedule of performances throughout France.

The concert will feature nostalgic selections from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," a beloved ballet that has become synonymous with wintery cheer. Although Mozart never composed a full ballet, his ballet music from the opera "Idomeneo" will also grace the program, showcasing his genius in integrating dance and accompanying music. The evening will be further enriched with works by 20th-century French composers Ibert and Tailleferre, adding elegance and charm to the repertoire. The program includes Ibert's "Flute Concerto" and "Hommage à Mozart," along with Tailleferre's "Petite Suite," marking its ESO premiere.

In the first part of the concert, the Spanish pianist, arranger, concert designer and musical jack-of-all-trades Iñigo Giner Miranda will help us to transform some of the most important works of the year into a kaleidoscopic production. He helps us to bring this time of contrasts, in which the » Roaring Twenties « and mass unemployment, Schönberg and Lehár met, to life on the Bonn opera stage. Béla Bartók and Germaine Tailleferre, Dmitri Shostakovich and Kurt Weill, orchestral works and chamber music, high glamour and tonal rebelliousness come together. The second part features Shostakovich’s first symphonic work, which was composed in the very year began to grow in the mind of the St Petersburg student in 1923: Rousing, tempestuously youthful, but at the same time masterfully and perfectly written! Three years later, in the diploma concert at the university, it was a huge success and the start of Shostakovich’s world career …

Concierto Con Brio, the Indiana consortium premiere, is composed by living Uruguayan-American composer and 23-24 ICO Composer-in-Residence, Miguel del Aguila. This concerto for oboe and clarinet was written for mother/son combination, Nancy Ambrose King, oboe, and Ryan King, clarinet. With movements inspired by tango and samba dance rhythms, “Concierto” balances perfectly with the French themes of imagination, light, and dance illuminated by Saint-Saëns, Ibert and Tailleferre completing the evening.

The Pomona College Band, one of the oldest college bands in the country, was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. Its goal is to prepare significant music in a collaborative atmosphere for performance at the highest level. They present two sets of concerts each academic year and have performed music by composers from Sousa to Bernstein and Ives to Rossini.

The program also includes Germaine Tailleferre's dream-like "Image" and other exuberant pieces from Paris' Jazz Age, such as "The Creation of the World" by Darius Milhaud and "La revue de cuisine" by Bohuslav Martinů.

With the fascinating marriage of Valérie Milot’s harp and Stéphane Tétreault’s cello, the orchestra delivers the debut performance of Denis Gougeon’s masterful composition. Composed in a state of anguish, Shostakovich’s fifth symphony is a stunning piece that triumphed despite attempts at repression from the Soviet Union. The concert starts off with the elegant Petite suite from the French impressionist composer Germaine Tailleferre, a deliberately subtle composition featuring Les Six’s sparkling colours.

Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cutting­edge performances. WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making.” The group’s 2019 album Her Voice, on Chandos Records, was named one of the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3. The Boston Musical Intelligencer reports, “it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.”
