In April, Alyssa Wang, Assistant Conductor of the Boston Ballet, leads Pro Arte in a dramatic journey from darkness to light. The concert opens with Joseph Haydn’s mercurial Symphony No. 95 in C Minor, whose frequent shifts between moods serious and cheerful are designed to keep listeners on their toes. Jennifer Higdon’s intense Viola Concerto is a kaleidoscopic exploration of all the voices in which that instrument can sing. It will feature Pro Arte’s very own principal violist, Anne Black. For the ballet Pulcinella, based on commedia dell’arte, Igor Stravinsky created sunny interpretations of 18th-century Italian music that brim with the composer’s signature wit and charm.

Some of history’s most profound musical masterpieces have been inspired by a hero’s journey from light to darkness, love and loss, with it encompassing all of life’s beauty and horror. These themes play out in magnificent form in Berlioz’s monumental “Symphonie Fantastique” and Grieg’s enchanting Piano Concerto. Buckle your seat belts, these stories are truly epic!

This concert will feature the IC Chamber Orchestra and IC Sinfonietta. The program features, among other compositions, Benjamin Britten's virtuosic Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, as well as a new composition, "Swept Away," a violin concerto performed by the composer, Alyssa Wang.

Hub’s 2021-22 highlights include concerts presented by the Morgan Library and Museum, Celebrity Series of Boston, Seattle Symphony, Soka Performing Arts Center, and Williams Center for the Performing Arts. Season residencies include visits to Baylor, Portland State, Illinois State, and Georgetown universities. The coming season brings premieres of new works by Nathalie Joachim, Laura Kaminsky, and Nina C. Young. In fall 2021, the Library of Congress presents the “virtual premiere” of Hub’s collaboration with composer Carlos Simon, Requiem for the Enslaved, which will tour in 2022-23. Simon’s large-scale work honors the lives of 272 slaves sold by Georgetown University (where Simon serves on the faculty) in 1838, and features spoken-word artist Marco Pavé, trumpeter Jared Bailey, and Simon on piano.
