A story of love, betrayal, and redemption, set between joyful peasant festivals and the white throng of willis, as captivating as they are merciless: Giselle, the quintessential romantic ballet, continues to move audiences with its delicate story, drawing them in through the technique and sensitivity of the performers’ interpretation, in the contrast between a sunny world and a dark realm populated by spirits. The La Scala Ballet brings back the unforgettable choreography of Coralli-Perrot in the revival by Yvette Chauviré, who, with her care and refinement in roles like Giselle, elevated the classical tradition in all its purity and earned global acclaim. Her version, which first premiered at La Scala in 1950, saw her perform as the ill-fated young peasant girl who dreamed of love and loved to dance. With the classic La Scala staging by Aleksandr Benois, Giselle is a part of the theatre’s history, performed by its artists in many countries around the world, infusing each revival with new life and emotions, keeping this wonderful production alive.

Giselle is a masterpiece of French Romanticism. While its musical and choreographic form has not changed significantly for years, its artistic merit has increased as the technical ability of subsequent generations of dancers has developed. The title heroine is a charming country girl, whose sweetheart turns out to be a prince in disguise. The shock of the revelation costs Giselle her sanity and life. After her death, she returns, surrounded by the spirits of young women who were wronged before marriage. These spirits now ambush young men, forcing them to dance until they die of exhaustion. Ultimately, Giselle’s love conquers death: when the prince turns up repentant by her grave, she saves him from the other spirits’ revenge. The ballet has been performed in Warsaw many times; notably, the previous two productions were designed by the late Andrzej Kreutz Majewski. Building on this tradition, when mounting this production of Giselle staged by Maina Gielgud, the Polish National Ballet decided to revive the great set designer’s stunning vision, recreating his decorations and costumes.

Imagine a story that combines romance, heartbreak, and the supernatural all in one breathtaking performance—Giselle is that ballet. First performed in Paris in 1841, it follows a young woman who falls in love with a man hiding a dangerous secret. When she learns the truth, tragedy strikes, but the story doesn’t end there—her spirit rises into a mysterious world of ghostly maidens who punish men for their betrayals.

What makes Giselle unforgettable is how love transcends even death. Instead of seeking revenge, Giselle chooses forgiveness, protecting the man who deceived her from the wrath of the vengeful spirits. With its hauntingly beautiful music, intense drama, and moments that feel almost cinematic, Giselle is a ballet that pulls you into a world of passion, danger, and ultimate redemption—an experience you’ll carry with you long after the curtain falls. We are delighted to present Giselle at The Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre.

The peasant girl Giselle has fallen in love with Albrecht. When she discovers that he is actually a nobleman promised to another, she kills herself in despair. Her spirit joins the Wilis: the vengeful ghosts of women hell-bent on killing any man who crosses their path in a dance to the death. Wracked with guilt, Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, where he must face the Wilis – and Giselle’s ghost.

The tribute from La Scala and its artists to Carla Fracci continues, as she remains a pivotal figure in the history of dance, a source of inspiration for generations of young people, not just in the world of ballet. Ballet director Frédéric Olivieri continues the tradition established in 2022 by Manuel Legris, celebrating dance and ballet in the name of this extraordinary star. Following the sell-out success of previous editions, there will be two performances in 2026, the year that marks both the fifth anniversary of Carla Fracci’s passing and the 90th anniversary of her birth. The vast and rich repertoire of her signature roles and the ballets she performed will be revived with international guests, the full La Scala Ballet Company – étoile, principal dancers, soloists, and artists of the Corps de Ballet – along with students from the School, the present and future of La Scala’s dance tradition.

Adolphe Adam’s sparkling Opéra comique was an international box office hit after its world premiere in Paris in 1836: People whistled the catchy tunes along streets in European capitals and quoted punchlines from the dialogues in taverns. The Greek National Opera’s 2026/27 season brings Giselle back to the Stavros Niarchos Hall, the production that enchanted audiences during winter 2025/26, underscoring the enduring allure of the most famous ballet of the Romantic era. Adolphe Adam’s masterpiece will be presented for eleven performances in December 2026 and January 2027, in a new, impressive interpretation of Marius Petipa’s classical choreography by distinguished choreographers Verónica Villar and Elena Iglesias. This GNO Ballet production, featuring world-class ballet stars, promises an experience of high aesthetic standards, where technical perfection meets profound emotional expression.
