Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

Adolphe Adam’s sparkling Opéra comique was an international box office hit after its world premiere in Paris in 1836: People whistled the catchy tunes along streets in European capitals and quoted punchlines from the dialogues in taverns. Even Richard Wagner sometimes hummed the well-known »Postillion song«, with its spectacular high D, when he couldn’t sleep at night. The score of this all but forgotten, masterful comedy, reveals cleverly crafted ensemble and chorus numbers in addition to fiendishly high notes and coloratura.

Joining us will be soprano Evelyn Saavedra, who recently starred in our Voices of Spring organ gala, bringing to us a voice of great beauty and a charming personality as well. Those of you who attended Madison Opera’s 2022 Opera in the Park will remember Limmie Pulliam’s show stopping performance of Puccini’s Nessun dorma. This remarkable tenor will join us as well, for a perfect way to start the holiday season.

One of the most beloved ballets of all time, this ethereal tale of immortal love and redemption will warm your soul. The elegant performance by State Street Ballet, with classic choreography by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot, and Marius Petipa, and music by Adolphe Adam performed by the Santa Barbara Symphony, will grace The Granada stage October 21 and 22.

Achingly beautiful, Giselle is an enrapturing work of art that draws audiences in with themes of enduring love, tragedy and romance.

‘Tis the season! LSO’s annual celebration returns with lots of holly, jolly, and more, including Sleigh Ride and O Holy Night with guest conductor Lucas Waldin. Tenor Drew Duncan and Soprano CeCe Hastreiter bring beloved holiday songs to life, and audiences of all ages can celebrate the joy of the season with Bell-issimo handbell choir, Lincoln Suzuki Studios, and the Lincoln Southwest Varsity Choir.

Bringing the beauty of classical ballet front and center, SDB’s new staging of GISELLE is a haunting rumination on romantic love and sacrifice. Traditionally, placed in 19th century Europe, Artistic Director Javier Velasco’s evocative production shifts the locale to the pueblos and ranchos of Spanish Colonial California. The tale of a simple peasant girl who’s love for a nobleman sparks tragedy takes on new life through the lens of San Diego’s early history. As does the poetic second act, featuring the spectral, beautiful Lloronas, the spirits of young women seeking revenge on the men who betrayed them. Highlighting classical dance in it most expressive and dramatic form.

Celebrate the season with the king of instruments! Enjoy a magnitude of musical splendors with world-class organist Todd Wilson and members of Pacific Symphony performing a delightful mix of sacred and holiday music. Favorite Christmas carols share the bill with traditional organ works that highlight the 4,322-pipe, $3.1 million William J. Gillespie Concert Organ.

Giselle is a masterpiece of French Romanticism. While its musical and choreographic form has not changed significantly for years, its artistic merit has increased as the technical ability of subsequent generations of dancers has developed. The title heroine is a charming country girl, whose sweetheart turns out to be a prince in disguise. The shock of the revelation costs Giselle her sanity and life. After her death, she returns, surrounded by the spirits of young women who were wronged before marriage. These spirits now ambush young men, forcing them to dance until they die of exhaustion. Ultimately, Giselle’s love conquers death: when the prince turns up repentant by her grave, she saves him from the other spirits’ revenge. The ballet has been performed in Warsaw many times; notably, the previous two productions were designed by the late Andrzej Kreutz Majewski. Building on this tradition, when mounting this production of Giselle staged by Maina Gielgud, the Polish National Ballet decided to revive the great set designer’s stunning vision, recreating his decorations and costumes.

A story of love, betrayal, and redemption, set between joyful peasant festivals and the white throng of willis, as captivating as they are merciless: Giselle, the quintessential romantic ballet, continues to move audiences with its delicate story, drawing them in through the technique and sensitivity of the performers’ interpretation, in the contrast between a sunny world and a dark realm populated by spirits. The La Scala Ballet brings back the unforgettable choreography of Coralli-Perrot in the revival by Yvette Chauviré, who, with her care and refinement in roles like Giselle, elevated the classical tradition in all its purity and earned global acclaim. Her version, which first premiered at La Scala in 1950, saw her perform as the ill-fated young peasant girl who dreamed of love and loved to dance. With the classic La Scala staging by Aleksandr Benois, Giselle is a part of the theatre’s history, performed by its artists in many countries around the world, infusing each revival with new life and emotions, keeping this wonderful production alive.

A Romantic Ballet Where Love Triumphs Over Betrayal.

Giselle tells the heartbreaking story of a peasant girl who falls deeply in love with Prince Albrecht, unaware of his true identity. When the truth is revealed and her heart shatters, Giselle succumbs to her grief. In the spirit world, she joins the Wilis — the ghosts of betrayed young women who dance men to death. Yet when Albrecht arrives at her grave, Giselle’s love rises above vengeance, protecting him from the Wilis’ deadly fate. 
 
A masterpiece of the Romantic era, Giselle is celebrated for its emotional depth, ethereal choreography, and hauntingly beautiful Act II. Performed with a full live orchestra, this production captures the power of forgiveness and the enduring strength of love.

Chilcott’s beautiful On Christmas Night, opens what promises to be an uplifting festive programme. The second half features a selection of well-known Christmas tunes in familiar and new arrangements. Works for choir and orchestra are interspersed by audience carols and seasonal readings.
