Virtuous young villager Giselle is seduced by the Duke Albrecht, disguised as a peasant himself, unaware that he is already betrothed. Jealousy leads to the uncovering of Albrecht’s true identity and the revelations drive Giselle to despair and ultimately to her death. Her ghost joins the Wilis, vengeful spirits of betrayed women who haunt the forest and lure men to dance to their deaths. A remorseful Albrecht comes to mourn at her grave and is ensnared by the Wilis’ magic. Only Giselle’s undying love can sustain him as he dances to the dawn.

Giselle, a poignant tale of love, betrayal, and redemption, tells the story of an innocent peasant girl deceived by Duke Albrecht. The discovery of his betrayal drives Giselle to madness, leading her to join the Wilis, spirits of maidens betrayed before their wedding day. In a test of true love and forgiveness, Giselle confronts her own tragedy to save Albrecht from a grim fate at the hands of the vengeful Wilis.

This year, the HapaSymphony series is proud to feature Na Leo Pilimehana, a group that has captivated audiences in Hawai'i and beyond for over three decades. With 23 Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards to their name, Na Leo Pilimehana has a rich history of hits including "Local Boys," "I Miss You My Hawaii," and the festive album "Hawaiian Holidays: Christmas with Na Leo." Prepare to be enchanted by the voices of Nalani Jenkins, Lehua Kalima, and Angela Morales as they join the HSO for a Christmas concert filled with merry melodies and holiday spirit.

Under the baton of conductor Dane Lam, the evening's program will feature a delightful mix of holiday classics and Hawaiian favorites. Highlights include Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival," Lehua Kalima's "Flying with Angels," Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria," and the festive "Mele Kalikimaka" by R. Alex Anderson, among others. This diverse program promises to bring the joy of the season to life, making it a perfect start to your holiday festivities.

In one of the most beloved classical ballets of all time, a small-town girl falls in love with a visiting stranger who betrays her. When she dies of grief, her spirit joins that of other wronged women, known as the Wilis. They band together to fight against those who have hurt them, forcing Giselle to choose between vengeance and love. The world premiere of this new adaptation choreographed by Tiit Helimets and Dani Rowe is an otherworldly ballet about hope, heartbreak, and forgiveness.

Coachman Chapelou gets an offer he can’t refuse, on his wedding day: The intendant of the Royal Opera wants to sign him up for the French King’s »smaller scale entertainments« … How will Chapelou’s newly wedded wife Madeleine react? Does a great singing career beckon the coachman in Paris? Will the bride and groom ever meet again?

Adolphe Adam’s sparkling Opéra comique was an international box office hit after its world premiere in Paris in 1836: People whistled the catchy tunes along streets in European capitals and quoted punchlines from the dialogues in taverns. Even Richard Wagner sometimes hummed the well-known »Postillion song«, with its spectacular high D, when he couldn’t sleep at night. The score of this all but forgotten, masterful comedy, reveals cleverly crafted ensemble and chorus numbers in addition to fiendishly high notes and coloratura.
