This nocturnal hymn explores the a cappella literature with contributions on the theme of "Ruins and Hope." The essence: Just as humanity carries within itself the will to destroy, it is also capable of reconciliation and hope. In 2020, the National Opera in Warsaw celebrated the 55th anniversary of the reconstruction of its historic home on Teatralny Square. The ambitious project of raising the theatre from ruins was completed 20 years after the war, with the grand opening of the modernized Grand Theatre on November 19, 1965. Shortly thereafter, the Warsaw Opera ensemble, including its distinguished choir, moved in from its temporary home on Nowogrodzka Street.

Last season, the Greek flutist Stathis Karapanos recorded an album with the Prague Philharmonia for the prestigious Warner Classics label. It features the complete repertoire for flute and orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki, a leading figure of Polish music in recent decades. Karapanos will perform one of these works, Sinfonietta for Flute and String Orchestra, on the fourth evening of Orchestral Series A under the direction of Polish conductor Łukasz Borowicz.

Clarinet sounds instead of flute sounds: we had to change our programme for our first concert at the Bundesrat: Our three string colleagues* are now presenting our audience with an evening centred on the interplay between string instruments and the clarinet. Krzysztof Penderecki’s darkly luminous clarinet quartet opens the evening, followed by the serenade for string trio by Ernst von Doer, which is filled with a charming joy of playing and rhythmic vigour.

Most music lovers are familiar with the “Great B’s,” Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but this is not the only alliterative group of brilliant composers. In our December concert, we invite listeners to celebrate the “Great P’s.” Highlights include three selections from operas by the master of drama, Giacomo Puccini, and a violin concerto by the master of orchestration, Sergei Prokofiev, featuring rising-star violin soloist Beau Henson. The concert opens with music by film score composer Rachel Portman, and includes the moving Agnus Dei from the Polish Requiem by the brilliant composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

Using the more modest, or intimate, medium of chamber music Premiere Preludes speak directly to our feelings and hearts. Held at the Polish National Opera's Redutowe Rooms, these concerts attract both opera and classical music lovers, who sometimes find themselves surprised or even astonished by the new the perspective they are offered. Coming in contact with the subtle fabric of top-quality chamber music is an excellent introduction to the aura of the new productions that are the backbone of the Polish National Opera artistic season.

Premiere Prelude: Prayer For The End Of A Century

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Soovin Kim, violin, and Daniel Phillips, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.
