Most music lovers are familiar with the “Great B’s,” Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but this is not the only alliterative group of brilliant composers. In our December concert, we invite listeners to celebrate the “Great P’s.” Highlights include three selections from operas by the master of drama, Giacomo Puccini, and a violin concerto by the master of orchestration, Sergei Prokofiev, featuring rising-star violin soloist Beau Henson. The concert opens with music by film score composer Rachel Portman, and includes the moving Agnus Dei from the Polish Requiem by the brilliant composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

The pieces I have chosen are all brought together by a common thread, with each composer paying tribute to something or someone great, a gesture that I find to be deeply meaningful. Whether it be Beethoven’s homage to Mozart, Ginastera’s visceral exploration of the Argentine landscapes, or Brahms’s reverence for Bach, I hope to give you a glimpse into what moved these great composers to write their remarkable and captivating music.”

Each concert in the Premiere Prelude series zeroes in on one opera or ballet composer, offering the audience a different glance at the individuals behind the large-scale dramatic works shown on our stage. Using the more modest, or intimate, medium of chamber music Premiere Preludes speak directly to our feelings and hearts. Held at the Polish National Opera's Redutowe Rooms, these concerts attract both opera and classical music lovers, who sometimes find themselves surprised or even astonished by the new the perspective they are offered. Coming in contact with the subtle fabric of top-quality chamber music is an excellent introduction to the aura of the new productions that are the backbone of the Polish National Opera artistic season.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Soovin Kim, violin, and Daniel Phillips, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

Created with Wigmore Hall’s Director, John Gilhooly, the chamber ensemble comprises a roster of outstanding musicians led by Michael Collins and Isabelle van Keulen. Here it takes up the cause of the neglected Anglo-French George Onslow, alongside the German Louis Spohr (1784-1859) and the Italian double bass virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini (1821-89).

Dmitri Shostakovich and Krzysztof Penderecki lived in turbulent times, with one facing censorship in Stalin's Russia and the other experiencing the oppression of his homeland's communist regime. The melancholy in their music reflects their personal struggles, yet hope resonates.
