Kurt Elling & Yellowjackets’ Celebrate Weather Report is a thrilling collaboration between two jazz powerhouses, blending the iconic music of Weather Report with bold reinterpretations and original artistry.

Grammy-winning vocalist Kurt Elling, known for his captivating baritone and improvisational brilliance, joins forces with Yellowjackets, jazz fusion legends redefining the genre for over four decades.

Late Romantic, atmospheric, dramatic, beautiful: the Shakespeare tone poem Hamlet and Ophelia by Edward MacDowell, the first US composer to achieve international acclaim. He was still strongly influenced by European tradition: lots of Liszt, a bit of Brahms, a dash of Edvard Grieg - that was the mix. The first true musical Americana emerged with ragtime, jazz, and the popular music influenced by them. George Gershwin was a pioneer in the fusion of these genres with classical music. Master arranger Robert Russell Bennett has combined the hits from his opera Porgy and Bess into a colorful panorama in his Symphonic Picture . The southern part of the continent also sends its greetings with Rhythm of the Americas by US jazz and fusion musician Bob Mintzer. Afro-Caribbean, jazz, and much more combine to create a fiery mix in this concert for saxophone quartet and orchestra. At the helm: the Israeli-American conductor Nimrod David Pfeffer, closely associated with the New York Met and the Lyric Opera Company of Guatemala.

If that's not a reason to celebrate: bassist John Goldsby has been on stage for 50 years, and with the WDR Big Band alone he can look back on 30 years together. At this concert, John Goldsby will be saying goodbye to the WDR Big Band with a very special selection of pieces: the first part includes the groovy and thoughtful Baden-Baden Suite, which was composed by Goldsby himself and arranged by chief conductor Bob Mintzer. The second part presents a selection of Goldsby's rich compositions that the band performed during his tenure. The arrangements come from important companions such as Vince Mendoza and Michael Abene. A musical cross-section that once again underlines how strongly John Goldsby's bass playing has influenced the WDR Big Band and the international jazz scene.

As a tight, longstanding jazz ensemble, Yellowjackets has explored a universe all its own of electroacoustic soundscapes in its nearly four-decade history. Since the band’s eponymous 1981 debut album, Yellowjackets has consistently forged ahead with innovative and challenging artistic statements. For Jackets XL, its 25th album and fourth for Mack Avenue Music Group, the band continues to stretch and reinvent itself with an exciting, full-bodied collaboration with the superb WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany. The project combines the shapeshifting, multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning quartet with the renowned big band, re-imagining well-known band originals with dynamic new arrangements that feature twists and turns, textures and colors, moving harmonies and bold solos.
