Michelle Zhang is a third-year student from St. Louis, Missouri, pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance at Washington University in St. Louis. Michelle began playing the oboe at age 11. At WashU, Michelle has been the principal oboist of the WashU Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, a member of several chamber ensembles, and a winner of the 2023–2024 Friends of Music Concerto and Aria Competition. Michelle currently studies oboe with Nadia Para, having previously studied with Claire Workinger, and has also received additional instruction from Dr. Sara Fraker of the University of Arizona and Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

Hailed by The New York Times at its Carnegie Hall debut as “invariably energetic and finely burnished… playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet was founded by the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Organization in 2010. The ensemble (Karla Donehew Perez, violin; Abi Fayette, violin; Paul Laraia, viola; and Karlos Rodriguez, cello) believes in the unity that can be achieved through music and imagine their programs and projects with this in mind, redefining and reimagining the classical music experience.

A Masterclass with Catalyst Quartet

The WashU Symphony Orchestra and WashU Concert Choir will unite for a special performance! This program will feature Leonard Bernstein's stunning masterpiece Chichester Psalms. In addition, Friends of Music Concerto & Aria Competition winners Katie Chan, harp and Michelle Zhang, oboe will perform concertos with the WashU Symphony Orchestra.
