The Fall 2024 San Luis Obispo Music Festival culminates in a concert performance of these amazing chamber works in the intimate setting of the Harold J. Miossi Cultural & Performing Arts Center.

Fall Chamber Concert

Join Scott Yoo and oboist Xiaodi Liu as they guide you through Gordon Jacob's Oboe Quartet. In this informal, one-hour event, Scott and the musicians will discuss the history surrounding the pieces, the composers’ lives and musical style, and perform selections from the works. Xiaodi will also teach you a little bit about the oboe along the way.

The Pomona College Band, directed by Graydon Beeks, is one of the oldest college bands in the country, and was founded in 1909. It is the concert band for The Claremont Colleges and is funded by Pomona College. The band’s membership is drawn from students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges, and members of the local community. For this concert, the ensemble will perform music by Gustav Holst, Gordon Jacob, Karl Kohn, Philip Sparke, and others.

Dive into the expansive repertoire of wind octets with the musicians of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) as they welcome the distinguished oboist Philippe Tondre. A Paris-trained virtuoso, Tondre is a professor at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and serves as the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with previous positions in Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Japan. This special program juxtaposes the timeless works of Mozart and Beethoven with pieces by one of England's most revered masters, Gordon Jacob, who taught composition at the Royal College of Music in London from 1924 to 1966.

When looking for the role models of the influential "Mannheim School", one often comes across the name of Johann Evangelist Brandl, born in Regensburg in 1760. Even though the Upper Palatinate native never made it to the actual Mecca of the musical avant-garde, he nevertheless made enough contacts with colleagues in the Bruchsal court of the Prince-Bishop of Speyer. They helped him when the bishop had to flee from the French in 1792, who then finally took Bruchsal seven years later. Brandl's new place of work was the Francophile court of the Grand Duke of Baden. There he composed numerous works for the bassoon, which he loved, until his death in 1837 - including the Quintet op.63.
