Gateways Music Festival and the Eastman School of Music celebrate violist George Taylor’s 40 years at Eastman with a moving tribute to his artistry, mentorship, and enduring impact. Joined by the Gateways Chamber Players—Diane Monroe and Kyle Lombard, violin; Juliet White-Smith, viola; Alvin McCall and Tahirah Whittington, cello; and pianist Dianna White-Gould—Taylor performs music of deep personal significance by Diane Monroe, Eric Kivnick, George Walker, J.S. Bach, and Johannes Brahms. Students, faculty, and the Rochester community will gather to honor a beloved teacher and artist at this remarkable career milestone.

Chamber Music Society will celebrate the progress of our Rader Young Artists this past year in a final concert on Friday June 13th at 7:30pm. These six musicians ranging from 14-18 years old were selected last fall in our annual competition. In addition to the scholarship money awarded, these students have opened Chamber Society Concerts throughout the season and received instruction in our Master Class Series. In this final concert, the Rader Young Artists are paired with professional Chamber Society musicians (Alvin McCall, Davin Rubicz, Kyle Lombard, and Michael Casimir) to perform three quartets. The repertoire is Mozart D Minor, K. 421, Beethoven Op. 18 No. 6, and finally Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ which turned out to be an appropriate selection for a Friday the thirteenth concert.

American icon Joan Tower honors the strength of women, dedicating her Fanfare to Tania León. Tania León in turn celebrates her vibrant Latin American cultural heritage in Tumbao. The fabled merry prankster of lore, Till Eulenspiegel gets a playful reimagining for mixed quintet and the confidence and vigor of youth are captured in Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet for winds, strings, and piano.
